On the Microscopic Origin of Cholesteric Pitch
We present a microscopic analysis of the instability of the nematic phase to
chirality when molecular chirality is introduced perturbatively. We show that
previously neglected short-range biaxial correlations play a crucial role in
determining the cholesteric pitch. We propose an order parameter which
quantifies the chirality of a molecule.Comment: RevTeX 3.0, 4 pages, one included eps figure. Published versio
Microstructure Effects for Casimir Forces in Chiral Metamaterials
We examine a recent prediction for the chirality-dependence of the Casimir
force in chiral metamaterials by numerical computation of the forces between
the exact microstructures, rather than homogeneous approximations. We compute
the exact force for a chiral bent-cross pattern, as well as forces for an
idealized "omega"-particle medium in the dilute approximation and identify the
effects of structural inhomogeneity (i.e. proximity forces and anisotropy). We
find that these microstructure effects dominate the force for separations where
chirality was predicted to have a strong influence. To get observations of
chirality free from microstructure effects, one must go to large separations
where the effect of chirality is at most of the total force.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Evolution of helicity in NOAA 10923 over three consecutive solar rotations
We have studied the evolution of magnetic helicity and chirality in an active
region over three consecutive solar rotations. The region when it first
appeared was named NOAA10923 and in subsequent rotations it was numbered NOAA
10930, 10935 and 10941. We compare the chirality of these regions at
photospheric, chromospheric and coronal heights. The observations used for
photospheric and chromospheric heights are taken from Solar Vector Magnetograph
(SVM) and H_alpha imaging telescope of Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO),
respectively. We discuss the chirality of the sunspots and associated H_alpha
filaments in these regions. We find that the twistedness of superpenumbral
filaments is maintained in the photospheric transverse field vectors also. We
also compare the chirality at photospheric and chromospheric heights with the
chirality of the associated coronal loops, as observed from the HINODE X-Ray
Telescope.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
A Proposal to Use Neutron Scattering to Measure Scalar Spin Chirality Fluctuations in Kagome Lattices
In the theory of quantum spin liquids, gauge fluctuations are emergent
excitations at low energy. The gauge magnetic field is proportional to the
scalar spin chirality, S1.(S2xS3). It is therefore highly desirable to measure
the fluctuation spectrum of the scalar spin chirality. We show that in the
Kagome lattice with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term, the fluctuation in Sz which
is readily measured by neutron scattering contains a piece which is
proportional to the chirality fluctuation.Comment: 8 Pages, 2 Figure
