Potassium metasomatism of volcanic and sedimentary rocks in rift basins, calderas and detachment terranes

The chemical, mineralogical, and oxygen-isotopic changes accompanying K-metasomatism are described. The similarities with diagenetic reactions in both deep marine and alkaline, saline-lake environments are noted. The common occurrence of K-metasomatism in upper-plate rocks of detachment terranes indicates that the early stage of severe regional extension causes crustal downwarping and, in arid to semi-arid regions, development of closed hydrographic basins

On the non-robustness of intermingled basins

It is well-known that it is possible to construct a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 3-torus in a similar way than in Kan's example. It has two hyperbolic physical measures with intermingled basins supported on two embedded tori with Anosov dynamics. A natural question is how robust is the intermingled basins phenomenon for diffeomorphisms defined on boundaryless manifolds? In this work we will show that on the 3-torus the only partially hyperbolic examples having hyperbolic physical measures with intermingled basins are not robust

The saddle-straddle method to test for Wada basins

First conceived as a topological construction, Wada basins abound in dynamical systems. Basins of attraction showing the Wada property possess the particular feature that any small perturbation of an initial condition lying on the boundary can lead the system to any of its possible outcomes. The saddle-straddle method, described here, is a new method to identify the Wada property in a dynamical system based on the computation of its chaotic saddle in the fractalized phase space. It consists of finding the chaotic saddle embedded in the boundary between the basin of one attractor and the remaining basins of attraction by using the saddle-straddle algorithm. The simple observation that the chaotic saddle is the same for all the combinations of basins is sufficient to prove that the boundary has the Wada property

Effects of precipitation uncertainty on discharge calculations for main river basins

    Get PDF
This study quantifies the uncertainty in discharge calculations caused by uncertainty in precipitation input for 294 river basins worldwide. Seven global gridded precipitation datasets are compared at river basin scale in terms of mean annual and seasonal precipitation. The representation of seasonality is similar in all datasets, but the uncertainty in mean annual precipitation is large, especially in mountainous, arctic, and small basins. The average precipitation uncertainty in a basin is 30%, but there are strong differences between basins. The effect of this precipitation uncertainty on mean annual and seasonal discharge was assessed using the uncalibrated dynamic global vegetation and hydrology model Lund-Potsdam-Jena managed land (LPJmL), yielding even larger uncertainties in discharge (average 90%). For 95 basins (out of 213 basins for which measurements were available) calibration of model parameters is problematic because the observed discharge falls within the uncertainty of the simulated discharge. A method is presented to account for precipitation uncertainty in discharge simulations
