The Politics of Development Policy and Development Policy Reform in New Order Indonesia

How can we account for Indonesia’s astonishing development performance between 1965 and 1997—rapid growth, massive reduction in the incidence of poverty, low income-inequality and substantial diversification of the economy—in the face of extremely dirigiste microeconomic policies, even by developing country standards, and massive, systemic and endemic rent-seeking and corruption? This question is answered by demonstrating that Suharto, the leader of Indonesia’s New Order government, was extremely successful in building and sustaining a procapitalist, pro-integration with the world economy, and pro-growth with equity political coalition in which corruption played a central role.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/40018/3/wp632.pd

A Mixed Methods Approach to Using Collaborative and Proactive Solutions with Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders while Applying the Self-Determination Theory

    Get PDF
Students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) that lack social skills and problem solving have stronger features of depression, higher drop-out rates and struggle with peer relations. With such an emphasis on academics in high school, students still need strategies taught to compensate for skill deficits in problem solving, relationship- building and choice making. This pragmatic mixed methods study used pre-and post-assessment data from the self-determination theory and examined the implementation of collaborative and proactive solutions through focus groups of teachers and mental health practitioners that work with students with EBD in a special education high school. While quantitative data was not significant, focus group findings specified changes in restructuring the current schedule, trust, time, buy-in and predominantly leadership implications. Recommendations for future studies include additional data sets to be included in the study; choosing elementary or middle school student populations; and applying a leadership frameworks at the onset of implementing collaborative and proactive solutions. Limitations of this study consisted of a small sample size and typical limitations of a focus group. This study adds to current gaps in high-school students with EBD, self-determination, and collaborative and proactive solutions

The State of Defined Benefit Pension Plans in Canada: An Update

Motivated by a continuous debate on pension plan shortfalls and a concern for the long-term viability of defined benefit pension plans, CGA-Canada saw a fit to update its estimate of the standing of defined benefit pension plans presented in its 2004 report titled "Addressing the Pensions Dilemma in Canada". Consistent with our initial findings, the issue of under-funded pension plans has become one of the most perplexing financial issues facing business executives, legislators and Canadian pensioners. Some 59% of Canadian defined benefit pension plans continue to be in deficit at December 31, 2004. If we provide for indexation of benefits, that number rises to 96%. It is estimated that the additional funding required to fully fund those deficit plans has grown from 160billionattheendof2003to160 billion at the end of 2003 to 190 billion at the end of 2004 (assuming indexation of accrued benefits). While pension underfunding is a challenge, it is more importantly a symptom of deeper problems rooted within the larger pension administration regime. Pension regulators must take a more proactive approach and monitor more closely pension plans that are in a deficit position.defined benefit pension plan, funding position of pension plans, household savings, retirement savings, retirement income, household finance, pension accounting
