    Particle Correlations at LEP

    Particle correlations are extensively studied to obtain information about the dynamics of hadron production. From 1989 to 2000 the four LEP collaborations recorded more than 16 million hadronic Z0 decays and several thousand W+W- events. In Z0 decays, two-particle correlations were analysed in detail to study Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac correlations for various particle species. In fully-hadronic W+W- decays, particle correlations were used to study whether the two W bosons decay independently.     Polarization and Spin Alignment in Multihadronic Z0 Decays

    The large statistics of millions of hadronic Z0 decays, accumulated by the four LEP experiments between 1989 and 1995, allowed for detailed investigations of the fragmentation process. Inclusive Lambda_b baryons and Lambda hyperons at intermediate and high momentum have been found to show longitudinal polarization. This may be related to the primary quark and antiquark polarization and the hadronization mechanism which produces the leading baryons. Helicity density-matrix elements have been measured for a variety of vector mesons produced inclusively in hadronic Z0 decays. The diagonal elements of some of the light mesons and the D*+- show a preference for a helicity-zero state if the meson carries a large fraction of the available energy. The mechanism which produces such spin alignment in the non-perturbative hadronization of the primary partons to the vector mesons is so far unexplained. For the B* the results are consistent with no spin alignment, which is expected in a picture based on HQET.     A Copyright Right of Publicity

    This Article identifies a striking asymmetry in the law’s disparate treatment of publicity-rights holders and copyright holders. State-law publicity rights generally protect individuals from unauthorized use of their name and likeness by others. Publicity-claim liability, however, is limited by the First Amendment’s protection for expressive speech embodying a “transformative use” of the publicity-rights holder’s identity. This Article examines for the first time a further limitation imposed by copyright law: when a publicity-rights holder’s identity is transformatively depicted in a copyrighted work without consent, the author’s copyright can produce the peculiar result of enjoining the publicity-rights holder from using or engaging in speech about her own depiction. This Article offers novel contributions to the literature on copyright overreach and: (1) identifies a legal asymmetry produced in the interplay of publicity rights, copyright law, and the First Amendment; (2) examines the burdens on constitutionally protected speech, autonomy, and liberty interests of publicity-rights holders when copyright law prevents or constrains use of their own depiction; and (3) outlines a framework for recognizing a “copyright right of publicity” to exempt the publicity-rights holder’s use from copyright infringement liability. Notably, this Article contributes uniquely to the literature by revealing new insights gained from an exclusive first-hand perspective of an internationally recognized celebrity whose persona was prominently depicted without prior notice or consent in a wide-release feature film

    This article briefly describes the normative/nonnormative distinction, and how one might invoke this distinction to locate a nonnormative dimension of actual causation. After briefly introducing Richard Wright\u27s concept of a necessary element in a set of conditions for an effect, the article notes ambiguities in the critical concepts of necessity and sufficiency that he deploys. The article suggests the most plausible interpretation of Wright\u27s use of different modal concepts

    The inverse electromagnetic scattering problem in a piecewise homogeneous medium

    This paper is concerned with the problem of scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves from an impenetrable obstacle in a piecewise homogeneous medium. The well-posedness of the direct problem is established, employing the integral equation method. Inspired by a novel idea developed by Hahner [11], we prove that the penetrable interface between layers can be uniquely determined from a knowledge of the electric far field pattern for incident plane waves. Then, using the idea developed by Liu and Zhang [21], a new mixed reciprocity relation is obtained and used to show that the impenetrable obstacle with its physical property can also be recovered. Note that the wave numbers in the corresponding medium may be different and therefore this work can be considered as a generalization of the uniqueness result of [20].Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, submitted for publicatio
