TopExNet: Entity-Centric Network Topic Exploration in News Streams
The recent introduction of entity-centric implicit network representations of
unstructured text offers novel ways for exploring entity relations in document
collections and streams efficiently and interactively. Here, we present
TopExNet as a tool for exploring entity-centric network topics in streams of
news articles. The application is available as a web service at

Effects of Light and Nutrients on Tomato Plant Compensation for Herbivory by \u3ci\u3eManduca Sexta\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae)
This preliminary study examined how two resources (light and nutrients) influence the ability of tomato plants to show growth compensation for defoliation by the tobacco homworm (Manduca sexta). Growth rate and biomass of plants grown under high and low levels of light and nutrients, and exposed to 4 levels of defoliation by Manduca sexta were measured. Nutrients affected plant growth rate much more strongly than did light. Light and nutrients, however, each influenced how herbivory affected plant growth. Defoliation significantly decreased growth rate only under conditions of low light and high nutrients. Biomass, on the other hand. was low under all resource treatments except high levels of both light and nutrients, and defoliation significantly decreased biomass only under high levels of both resources. Thus, plants appeared to compensate for damage. in terms of biomass, only under conditions of either low light and/or low nutrients
Sustaining the Rare and Special Collections of Burke Theological Library
The Columbia University Libraries seeks a one-year planning and evaluation grant to diagnose the causes of damaging temperature and humidity fluctuations in the rare book and special collections stacks of Burke Theological Library and propose realistic, achievable, customized solutions to bring conditions more closely in line with preservation recommendations for prolonging the useful life of unique and valuable books and manuscripts. This project focuses on Burke Library's Brown Tower, which houses the rare and special collections. Burke Library is the largest theological library in the western hemisphere and is an invaluable resource for scholars in many humanities fields beyond theology and religious studies, including anthropology, education, history, languages, music, philosophy, social sciences, and visual arts
Users Guide for SnadiOpt: A Package Adding Automatic Differentiation to Snopt
SnadiOpt is a package that supports the use of the automatic differentiation
package ADIFOR with the optimization package Snopt. Snopt is a general-purpose
system for solving optimization problems with many variables and constraints.
It minimizes a linear or nonlinear function subject to bounds on the variables
and sparse linear or nonlinear constraints. It is suitable for large-scale
linear and quadratic programming and for linearly constrained optimization, as
well as for general nonlinear programs. The method used by Snopt requires the
first derivatives of the objective and constraint functions to be available.
The SnadiOpt package allows users to avoid the time-consuming and error-prone
process of evaluating and coding these derivatives. Given Fortran code for
evaluating only the values of the objective and constraints, SnadiOpt
automatically generates the code for evaluating the derivatives and builds the
relevant Snopt input files and sparse data structures.Comment: pages i-iv, 1-2
