In the Netherlands, energy cooperatives are increasingly active in the production of renewable energy. Many cooperatives have concrete plans to invest in energy projects, such as solar fields and wind turbines. Unfortunately, in the coming years there will hardly be any room for such projects in the electricity grid. In their quest to help solve this predicament, energy cooperatives develop new and innovative energy services, for example delivering grid services to distribution system operators (DSOs). However, in this endeavor they encounter legal as well as economic obstacles

The heating transition; what can we learn from the German Energiewende?

There is an urgent need for energy renovation of the existing building stock to reach the climate goals, set in Paris in 2016. Unfortunately, energy renovation rates across the EU remain at a low level of 1% per year. Moreover, the depth of the achieved energy renovation is in most cases rather shallow. Deep renovation, referring to renovation which lowers energy use with 60% or more, accounts for only 0,2% of total refurbishments. This means that both the pace and the quality of energy renovation needs to increase to achieve climate goals in 2050. In this article we identify lessons-learned from policies for energy renovation, in particular policies regarding the Energiewende in Germany. The heritage of captains on Wadden Sea islands

Ameland, a Dutch Wadden Sea island, is blessed with many historical buildings, such as captains’ houses, which make up picturesque neighbourhoods. Together with the attractions of sandy beaches, these quaint villages attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Ameland also has the ambitious goal to become self-sufficient in renewable energy. Therefore, it is now urgently needed to design strategies for energy efficiency, while keeping cherished values intact

Local citizen initiatives and transitions to energy sustainability

The energy transition requires the transformation of communities and neighbourhoods. It will have huge ramifications throughout society. Many cities, towns and villages have put together ambitious visions about how to achieve e.g. energy neutrality, zero-emission or zero-impact. What is happening at the local level towards realizing these ambitions? In a set of case study’s we investigate the following questions: How are self-organized local energy initiatives performing their self-set tasks? What obstacles are present in the current societal set-up that can hinder decentralized energy production? In our cases local leadership, vision, level of communication and type of organisation are important factors of the strength of the ‘local network’. (Inter)national energy policy and existing energy companies largely determine the ‘global’ or outside network. Stronger regional and national support structures, as well as an enabling environment for decentralized energy production, are needed to make decentralized sustainable energy production a success
