    Defects in High Entropy Alloy HfNbTaTiZr Prepared by High Pressure Torsion

    High entropy alloy HfNbTaTiZr was successfully processed by severe plastic deformation using high pressure torsion (HPT) and ultrafine grained microstructure was achieved. The microstructure of HPT-deformed HfNbTaTiZr alloy was characterized by X-ray diffraction and compared with conventionally cast ingots. The lattice defects introduced by HPT processing were characterized by positron annihilation spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction profiles of HTP-deformed samples were extremely broadened due to small sizes of coherently diffracting domains and a high microstrain introduced by severe plastic deformation.11Ysciescopu

    High entropy alloys are a new material class with promising structural and mechanical properties in wide range of applications. In principle they consist of five or more elements in equimolar concentrations resulting basically in single phase microstructure. TaNbHfZrTi alloy was developed by Senkov for high temperature applications.\nSince all of these elements are biocompatible the TaNbHfZrTi alloy can be investigated as a prospective bio implant material. The alloy was prepared by vacuum arc melting, no annealing treatment was applied. Tensile test and hardness test at room temperature were performed with very good results: yield strength 1155 MPa, rupture strength 1212 MPa, Vickers hardness 359 HV30.     Strength enhancement of high entropy alloy HfNbTaTiZr by severe plastic deformation

    Refractory metal high entropy alloy HfNbTaTiZr with ultrafine grained structure and grain size of approximate to 80 nm was processed by high pressure torsion. The development of microstructure, lattice defects and mechanical properties with increasing strain was examined. Grain refinement of HfNbTaTiZr alloy deformed up to the equivalent strain e approximate to 50 resulted in a significant enhancement of strength while keeping sufficient ductility. However, further straining e > 100 led to a decrease of strength and the loss of ductility due to the decomposition of solid solution facilitated by vacancies introduced by severe plastic deformation.
