Gelatin-based hemostatic agents for medical and dental application at a glance: A narrative literature review

Uncontrolled bleeding is linked to higher treatment costs, risk of post-surgical infection and increased disease and death. Hemostatic agents are used to treat excessive bleeding. A good hemostatic agent controls bleeding effectively, reduces the need for blood transfusion, removes the need for systemic drugs to control bleeding, results in shorter surgery time, and reduces the cost and length of hospital stay of the patient. Gelatin-based hemostatic agents have been widely used in medical and dental procedures, owing to their biodegradability and biocompatibility, as well as availability and low cost of raw materials. In this narrative literature review, we discuss the back- ground and different types of gelatin-based hemostatic agents in medical and dental procedures, the comparison of gelatin-based and non-gelatin-based hemostatic agents, and the usage and develop- ment of enhanced or novel gelatin-based hemostatic agents. Gelatin-based hemostatic agents are effective and important part of bleeding control, as evidenced by its wide application in medicin

The application of data science on food waste problem: a preliminary work

Food waste refers to food that is fit for human consumption, but is discarded after it is kept past its expiration date or allowed to spoil due to factors like food spoilage, market surplus, and individual shopping and eating habits. It is a common problem worldwide, including in Malaysia. In reality, one-third of the total food generated is wasted or lost annually, and at least 820 million people worldwide do not have sufficient food. This study attempts to observe the current trends in the amount of food waste generated in Malaysia so that the public awareness can be increased. This paper also wishes to study about the undernourishment crisis for lowering the extreme hunger issues and to reduce the food losses especially rice, along the production and supply chain. This study indirectly aligns with sustainable development goals (SDG) related to zero hunger, and responsible consumption and production. Initially, the data science processes were implemented including data collection, data pre-processing, data cleaning, data exploration and selection, data wrangling, and exploratory data analysis (EDA). In Japan, the food waste issue was not given enough attention. It reflects the significant upswing in its early graph, which then began to decline. On the other hand, the food waste issue in Korea initially exhibited a sharp surge before a progressive drop. Regarding the undernourishment issue, almost all Southeast Asian nations nowadays are putting a lot of effort into eradicating or drastically lowering undernutrition among their citizens compared to the past. Rice is the common food type in Southeast Asia, which means it gets discarded frequently. The residents of Southeast Asia regard rice as a main food source

External root resorption (EARR) and interleukin-1ฮฒ (rs1143634) gene polymorphism in the Bataknese population: a pilot study

External apical root resorption (EARR) is a condition that frequently arises after orthodontic treatment. Interleukin 1 (IL-1) is the gene responsible for the initiation of bone resorption and activating the osteoclasts, and is responsible for the potential of root resorption development. This study investigated the presence of a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs1143634) in IL-1ฮฒ gene and its relationship with root resorption in 20 individuals of Bataknese background. Panoramic radiographs of all patients were taken before and after orthodontic treatment. Subjects were classified as either EARR โ‰ฅ2mm or EARR <2mm based on their permanent central maxillary incisor measurements. Unstimulated saliva samples were taken for genetic screening. The polymorphism was analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction followed by purification and sequencing method. For male subjects, 2 subjects fell under Grade 0, while Grades I, II and III recorded 3 subjects. Meanwhile for female subjects, 7 fell under Grade II, followed by 5 under Grade I, 2 under Grade 0, and 1 patient under Grade II. Following sequencing method, there is no polymorphism detected in all samples. The current study shows that single nucleotide polymorphism (rs1143634) in IL-1ฮฒ has no role in predisposition towards EARR in the Bataknese population. However, based on the data, we recommend further studies in larger sample populations for better accuracy and consistency
