Vortex-like surface wave and its role in the transient phenomena of meta-material focusing
We show that a slab of meta-material (with )
possesses a vortex-like surface wave with no ability to transport energy, whose
nature is completely different from a localized mode or a standing wave.
Through computations based on a rigorous time-dependent Green's function
approach, we demonstrate that such a mode inevitably generates characteristic
image oscillations in two dimensional focusing with even a monochromatic
source, which were observed in many numerical simulations, but such
oscillations are weak in three dimensional focusing.Comment: To appear in the March 7th issue of Appl. Phys. Let
ENO-wavelet transforms for piecewise smooth functions
We have designed an adaptive essentially nonoscillatory (ENO)-wavelet transform for approximating discontinuous functions without oscillations near the discontinuities. Our approach is to apply the main idea from ENO schemes for numerical shock capturing to standard wavelet transforms. The crucial point is that the wavelet coefficients are computed without differencing function values across jumps. However, we accomplish this in a different way than in the standard ENO schemes. Whereas in the standard ENO schemes the stencils are adaptively chosen, in the ENO-wavelet transforms we adaptively change the function and use the same uniform stencils. The ENO-wavelet transform retains the essential properties and advantages of standard wavelet transforms such as concentrating the energy to the low frequencies, obtaining maximum accuracy, maintained up to the discontinuities, and having a multiresolution framework and fast algorithms, all without any edge artifacts. We have obtained a rigorous approximation error bound which shows that the error in the ENO-wavelet approximation depends only on the size of the derivative of the function away from the discontinuities. We will show some numerical examples to illustrate this error estimate
Secret Key Agreement under Discussion Rate Constraints
For the multiterminal secret key agreement problem, new single-letter lower
bounds are obtained on the public discussion rate required to achieve any given
secret key rate below the secrecy capacity. The results apply to general source
model without helpers or wiretapper's side information but can be strengthened
for hypergraphical sources. In particular, for the pairwise independent
network, the results give rise to a complete characterization of the maximum
secret key rate achievable under a constraint on the total discussion rate
On the Optimality of Secret Key Agreement via Omniscience
For the multiterminal secret key agreement problem under a private source
model, it is known that the maximum key rate, i.e., the secrecy capacity, can
be achieved through communication for omniscience, but the omniscience strategy
can be strictly suboptimal in terms of minimizing the public discussion rate.
While a single-letter characterization is not known for the minimum discussion
rate needed for achieving the secrecy capacity, we derive single-letter lower
and upper bounds that yield some simple conditions for omniscience to be
discussion-rate optimal. These conditions turn out to be enough to deduce the
optimality of omniscience for a large class of sources including the
hypergraphical sources. Through conjectures and examples, we explore other
source models to which our methods do not easily extend
Integration of blockchains with management information systems
In the era of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), many Management Information Systems (MIS) integrate real-time data collection and use technologies such as big data, machine learning, and cloud computing, to foster a wide range of creative innovations, business improvements, and new business models and processes. However, the integration of blockchain with MIS offers the blockchain trilemma of security, decentralisation and scalability. MIS are usually Web 2.0 clientserver applications that include the front end web systems and back end databases; while blockchain systems are Web 3.0 decentralised applications. MIS are usually private systems that a single party controls and manages; while blockchain systems are usually public, and any party can join and participate. This paper clarifies the key concepts and illustrates with figures, the implementation of public, private and consortium blockchains on the Ethereum platform. Ultimately, the paper presents a framework for building a private blockchain system on the public Ethereum blockchain. Then, integrating the Web 2.0 client-server applications that are commonly used in MIS with Web 3.0 decentralised blockchain applications
Duality between Feature Selection and Data Clustering
The feature-selection problem is formulated from an information-theoretic
perspective. We show that the problem can be efficiently solved by an extension
of the recently proposed info-clustering paradigm. This reveals the fundamental
duality between feature selection and data clustering, which is a consequence of
the more general duality between the principal partition and the principal
lattice of partitions in combinatorial optimization
