    High compression ratio image processing techniques using combinations of WT and IFS

    Many works of compressing image based on wavelet transformation have been presented in recent years. Also, the method of fractals is used in this field. The first method uses the pyramid subband decomposition, and the second takes advantage of the self-similarity between the basic image and subimages. We combine these two methods as a hybrid algorithm to complete the image compression. The experiments show that this method has a better performance than many others, especially, in a high compression ratio situation. A comparison with the famous embedded zero tree wavelet (EZW) algorithm shows that its performance is close to the EZW algorithm.published_or_final_versio

    Exploring Adoption and Satisfaction with Self-Service Health Technology in Older Age: Perspectives of Healthcare Professionals and Older People

    (1) Background. A range of self-service technologies (SST) have been adapted to support the health of older people. Factors involved in older people’s and health professionals’ perceptions of SST in older age were investigated. (2) Methods. Customer Dominant Logic guided this prospective mixed-methods study, including surveys with people 70 years and over and health professionals and individual semi-structured interviews in a sample of survey respondents. Survey data were descriptively analysed, while interview themes were derived inductively. (3) Results. Surveyed (n = 12) people 70 years and over placed higher value, expressed more positive user experience, were more satisfied and had greater recognition of the benefits of SST, compared with (n = 10) health professionals (p = 0.001), who considered them to be inferior to traditional healthcare. All seven interviewees agreed that despite accessibility issues and complexity, they valued SST support of older people’s health, thereby confirming the relevance of Customer Dominant Logic in SST offerings. (4) Conclusions. Since older participants were positive and satisfied in using SSTs that are health-supporting, health professionals have a role in encouraging and assisting older people in their use. This requires targeted SST education for health professionals, and more accessible, user-friendly SST and technological support for older people

    Resonant intrinsic spin hall effect in p-type GaAs quantum well structure

    We study intrinsic spin Hall effect in p-type GaAs quantum well structure described by Luttinger Hamiltonian and a Rashba spin-orbit coupling arising from the structural inversion symmetry breaking. The Rashba term induces an energy level crossing in the lowest heavy hole subband, which gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance. The resonance may be used to identify the intrinsic spin Hall effect in experiments. © 2006 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    Power electronic-controlled switch has been used with a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) to develop an advanced high Q resonant circuit. With a HTS, a very high Q circuit can be achieved; consequently special aspects such as high voltage generation can be theoretically and practically realized.     Promotion of ganoderic acid production in Ganoderma sinense by the addtion of an ether extract from Eupolyphaga sinensis, a medicinal insect

    To screen stimulators from Chinese medicinal insects for mycelial growth and ganoderic acid (GA) production by Ganoderma sinense, the fungus was inoculated into the media with and without supplementation of a medicinal insect extract. The results show that all the water and ether extracts from the medicinal insects had no significant stimulatory effect on the biomass production (P > 0.05), and the extracts of Hydrotrechus remigator and Mylabris phalerata significantly inhibited the mycelial growth. However, the ether extract of Eupolyphaga sinensis at a concentration of 60 mgL-1 led to a significant increase in GA concentration from 187.6 ± 8.32 to 251.3 ± 11.27 mgL-1 (P < 0.01). Analysis of fermentation kinetics of G. sinense suggests that glucose concentration in the E. sinensis extract treatment group decreased more quickly as compared to the control group in the last 4 days of fermentation process, while the GA biosynthesis was promoted at the same period. However, the culture pH profile was not affected by the addition of the ether extract of E. sinensis.Key words: Medicinal fungus, Ganoderma sinense, submerged fermentation, Eupolyphaga sinensis, ganoderic acid

    Phytochemical Constituents and Pharmacological Activities of Plants from the Genus Adiantum: A Review

    Adiantum is a genus of ca. 200 species in the family Adiantaceae, distributed extensively across the world from cool temperate zones to hot tropical regions. A lot of Adiantum species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to cure human and animal diseases including relief of internal heat or fever, enhancement of urination, removal of urinary calculus, and sundry other curative claims. Chemical studies have shown the presence of various classes of compounds, the main ones being triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenyl propanoids, steroids, alicyclic acids, lipids and long-chain compounds. The extract of this genus as well as pure compounds isolated from it have been demonstrated to possess multiple pharmacological activities such as analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-implantation, and antimicrobial activities. In this review, we have addressed the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of the Adiantum species in order to collate existing information on this plant as well as highlight its multi-activity properties as a medicinal agent.Keywords: Adiantum species, Adiantaceae, Phytochemical constituents, Pharmacological activities

    Isolation and Characterization of Batatasin III and 3,4’- Dihydroxy-5-methoxybibenzyl: A Pair of Positional Isomers from Sunipia scariosa

    Purpose: To isolate and characterize chemical compounds of biological importance from the whole plant of Sunipia scariosa.Methods: The whole plant of Sunipia scariosa was extracted with methanol (MeOH) and chromatographed on silica gel and sephadex LH-20 to afford the pure isolates. High perfomance liquild chromatography (HPLC) was used for further purification of the isolated compounds. Characterization ofthe isolated compounds was achieved by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS).Results: Batatasin III (3,3’-dihydroxy-5-methoxybibenzyl) and  3,4’-dihydroxy-5-methoxybibenzyl, a pair of positional isomers, were isolated from the whole plant of Sunipia scariosa. The yields of the two isomers were 60 and 40 %, respectively, from the mixture of two  compounds.Conclusion: Batatasin III and 3,4’-dihydroxy-5-methoxybibenzyl, a pair of positional isomers were successfully isolated from the whole plant of Sunipia scariosa for the first time.Keywords: Sunipia scariosa, Batatasin III, 3,4’-Dihydroxy-5-methoxybibenzyl, Isomer

    Probability to produce animal vaccines in insect baculovirus expression system

    The insect baculovirus expression system is a valuable tool for the production of vaccine. Many subunit vaccines have been expressed in this system. The first vaccine produced in insect cells for animal use is now in the market. In this study, we reviewed recent progress of animal’s vaccine production for different expression levels and baculovirus genome stability, characteristic features of baculovirus expression vector system (BVES), virus link particles, baculovirus expression in mammalian cell and methodology of produce subunit vaccines.
