A Low-Cost and Low-Power Messaging System Based on the LoRa Wireless Technology

[EN] In this paper we describe a low-cost and low-power consumption messaging system based on LoRa technology. More that one billion people worldwide cannot access even the most basic connectivity services. For them even simple messaging services would be of great help, for example to farmers wishing to know the price of goods they want to sell or buy before deciding whether a possibly long, expensive and exhausting trip is undertaken. LoRa networks allow for very long wireless links that can connect villages and towns. This system falls in the category of community networks, where users build their own network where no commercial infrastructure is available. In addition to the simple messaging application, LoRa can be used to distribute sensor information to communities or to provide disaster alerts or meteorological data.Moreno Cardenas, A.; Nakamura Pinto, MK.; Pietrosemoli, E.; Zennaro, M.; Rainone, M.; Manzoni, P. [EN] Remote locations in rural areas can benefit from any system that would provide some form of connectivity. In a previous work we described a low cost architecture that, thanks to the use of the LoRa technology, allowed long links using low energy and a cheap infrastructure. In this work we extend those results by adding the possibility to include generic external sources of data using an MQTT based interface. More specifically, we describe a voice messaging system that allows users that cannot read or write to send voice based messages. We describe how the system was integrated into the existing platform and present so me performance results. We consider that these results are promising and provide a tool that can offer a useful service at a low cost. This work was partially supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Programa Estatal de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación Orientada a los Retos de la Sociedad, Proyectos I+D+I 2018, Spain, under Grant RTI2018-096384-B-I00.Nakamura, K.; Manzoni, P.; Zennaro, M.; Cano, J.; Tavares De Araujo Cesariny Calafate, CM. A LoRa-based protocol for connecting IoT edge computing nodes to provide small-data-based services

[EN] Data is becoming increasingly personal. Individuals regularly interact with a variety of structured data, ranging from SQLite databases on the phone to personal sensors and open government data. The ¿digital traces left by individuals through these interactions¿ are sometimes referred to as ¿small data¿. Examples of ¿small data¿ include driving records, biometric measurements, search histories, weather forecasts and usage alerts. In this paper, we present a flexible protocol called LoRaCTP, which is based on LoRa technology that allows data ¿chunks¿ to be transferred over large distances with very low energy expenditure. LoRaCTP provides all the mechanisms necessary to make LoRa transfer reliable by introducing a lightweight connection setup and allowing the ideal sending of an as-long-as necessary data message. We designed this protocol as communication support for small-data edge-based IoT solutions, given its stability, low power usage, and the possibility to cover long distances. We evaluated our protocol using various data content sizes and communication distances to demonstrate its performance and reliability. This work was partially supported by the "Conselleria de Innovacion, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital", Proyectos AICO/2020, Spain, under Grant AICO/2020/302 and "Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades, Programa Estatal de Investigacion, Desarrollo e Innovacion Orientada a los Retos de la Sociedad, Proyectos IDI 2018", Spain, under Grant RTI2018-096384-B-I00.Nakamura, K.; Manzoni, P.; Redondi, A.; Longo, E.; Zennaro, M.; Cano, J.; Tavares De Araujo Cesariny Calafate, CM. [EN] The LoRa technology enables long distance links with reduced power consumption at low cost, the main limitation being the low bandwidth that it offers. With LoRa, remote locations, like rural areas, can benefit from connectivity based services that would otherwise be impossible. In this work, we describe a LoRa architecture that can include generic external data sources using an MQTT-based interface. We particularly focus on audio sources aiming to two basic services: a voice messaging system that allows users who cannot read or write to send voice notes, and an audio compression service to extract the main features from the audio input to use it for developing intelligent ML-based audio analytics. This work has been partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, under the Ramon y Cajal Program (Grant No. RYC2018-025580-I) and under grants RTI2018-096384-B-I00, RTC-2017-6389-5 and RTC2019-007159-5, by the Fundacion Seneca del Centro de Coordinacion de la Investigacion de la Region de Murcia under Project 20813/PI/18, and by the "Conselleria de Educacion, Investigacion, Cultura y Deporte, Direccio General de Ciencia i Investigacio, Proyectos AICO/2020", Spain, under Grant AICO/2020/302.Nakamura, K.; Hernandez, D.; Cecilia-Canales, JM.; Manzoni, P.; Zennaro, M.; Cano, J.; Tavares De Araujo Cesariny Calafate, CM. East & West : culture of colour and light in architecture

This book is born with the aim to fix some key points about the role of colour and light in architecture during the contemporary time played by two historical cultures so different, but hardly interconnected: East and West. In this time where the supremacy seems to be managed by the mercantile-economic power and not by the social, cultural and political organization, all we imagine has an economic value. The colour and light use isn’t over this logic. Every material or immaterial thing has a monetary value, so commonly the market appreciates only applied research. Everything else is absolutely secondary. In this way of attributing value in terms of economy production, colour and light have become strategic. A "particular" use of colour might affect buyers’ preferences. It’s commonly known that colour and light in architecture can discriminate some business. Very far away from this contemporary approach, the book tries to identify the mutual cultural aspects that distinguish or unify both the cultures. To make this analysis we need to find common aspects and verify the differences occurring in the colour and light field according to the researchers living in the both areas: East and West. The researchers involved in this work are for the West: Pietro Zennaro, Katia Gasparini and Alessandro Premier. Those engaged for the East are: Elisabetta Colla, Harry Shu’Yuan, Zahra Javani and Mohammad Reza Moshkforoush
