A Conceptual Framework For OUM M-Learning Portal
This paper presents a conceptual framework for Open University Malaysia’s (OUM) M-Learning Portal. As an extension of the currently practised blended learning approach to distance education, mobile learning offers learners a learning experience based on greater access to learning material anytime anywhere. This paper focuses on the development of a conceptual framework for mobile learning which is based on eight criteria covering mobile learning objectives, learning styles and strategies, varied media formats, a platform that sustains learning materials and additional features that accommodate successful implementation of mobile learning. The portal for housing and the delivery of mobile learning materials must be practical and accessible for all OUM learners. These materials can be presented in a structure that promotes self-selection of material by students, the hallmark of discovery learning. The success of mobile learning also relies on the awareness created and the support given to the learners. (Authors' abstract
Capacity building through graphic design software usage in Open University Malaysia
In the rising economy and fast paced technologies, companies are finding ways to build
the capacity of their workforce using cheaper or free technology solutions that can
collaborate, share, develop the relevant knowledge and skills. This process is a priority
in order to obtain, improve, and retain the skill needed to do their jobs competently or
to a greater capacity. Therefore, the widespread use of open educational resources
particularly free software seems to offer promising solution in capability building
efforts of an individual or organisation facing constraints in the workplace. Thus, this
study aims to explore the effectiveness of capacity building initiatives through the use
of graphic design software for the targeted support workforce of Open University
Malaysia. Accordingly, several workshops were conducted using graphic design
software known as Inkscape. Furthermore, a survey was carried out to explore the
awareness, perceived ease of use and intention to use of the Inkscape software. The
results are very positive and encouraging, especially when the participant are able to
create attractive design works and are willing to continue producing them at their
workplace. (Abstract by authors
Teaching and Learning of Technical Subjects in an ODL Environment
This paper discusses the research focus of teaching and learning of science and technical courses, namely the pedagogical approach which is much centred around the constructivism theory; the mode of teaching which in recent years is centred around visualisation; and finally the role of ICT, mainly related to multimedia learning. Discussion is mainly geared towards highlighting key ideas that has been in studied throughout the years with the aim to improve the interest and performance of students in science and technical courses which seem to have declined in recent years. A list of research questions grouped under three different aspects involving students, content, and delivery of content is presented to map future research and development in science and technical education.
