Deficiency of ribosomal proteins (RPs) leads to Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA) associated with anemia, congenital defects, and cancer. While p53 activation is responsible for many features of DBA, the role of immune system is less defined. The Innate immune system can be activated by endogenous nucleic acids from non-processed pre-rRNAs, DNA damage, and apoptosis that occurs in DBA. Recognition by toll like receptors (TLRs) and Mda5-like sensors induces interferons (IFNs) and inflammation. Dying cells can also activate complement system. Therefore we analyzed the status of these pathways in RP-deficient zebrafish and found upregulation of interferon, inflammatory cytokines and mediators, and complement. We also found upregulation of receptors signaling to IFNs including Mda5, Tlr3, and Tlr9. TGFb family member activin was also upregulated in RP-deficient zebrafish and in RPS19-deficient human cells, which include a lymphoid cell line from a DBA patient, and fetal liver cells and K562 cells transduced with RPS19 shRNA. Treatment of RP-deficient zebrafish with a TLR3 inhibitor decreased IFNs activation, acute phase response, and apoptosis and improved their hematopoiesis and morphology. Inhibitors of complement and activin also had beneficial effects. Our studies suggest that innate immune system contributes to the phenotype of RPS19-deficient zebrafish and human cells

Preroughening, Diffusion, and Growth of An FCC(111) Surface

Preroughening of close-packed fcc(111) surfaces, found in rare gas solids, is an interesting, but poorly characterized phase transition. We introduce a restricted solid-on-solid model, named FCSOS, which describes it. Using mostly Monte Carlo, we study both statics, including critical behavior and scattering properties, and dynamics, including surface diffusion and growth. In antiphase scattering, it is shown that preroughening will generally show up at most as a dip. Surface growth is predicted to be continuous at preroughening, where surface self-diffusion should also drop. The physical mechanism leading to preroughening on rare gas surfaces is analysed, and identified in the step-step elastic repulsion.Comment: Revtex + uuencoded figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter

Improvement Energy Efficiency for a Hybrid Multibank Memory in Energy Critical Applications

High performance, low power multiprocessor/multibank memory system requires a compiler that provides efficient data partitioning and mapping procedures. This paper introduced two compiler techniques for the data mapping to multibank memory, since data mapping is still an open problem and needs a better solution. The multibank memory can be consisted of volatile and non-volatile memory components to support ultra-low powered wearable devices. This hybrid memory system including volatile and non-volatile memory components yields higher complexity to map data onto it. To efficiently solve this mapping problem, we formulate it to a simple decision problem. Based on the problem definition, we proposed two efficient algorithms to determine the placement of data to the multibank memory. The proposed techniques consider the characteristic of the non-volatile memory that its write operation consumes more energy than the same operation of a volatile memory even though it provides ultra-low operation power and nearly zero leakage current. The proposed technique solves this negative effect of non-volatile memory by using efficient data placement technique and hybrid memory architecture. In experimental section, the result shows that the proposed techniques improve energy saving up to 59.5% for the hybrid multibank memory architecture
