Emergence of self-similarity in football dynamics

    Get PDF
The multiplayer dynamics of a football game is analyzed to unveil self-similarities in the time evolution of player and ball positioning. Temporal fluctuations in both the team-turf boundary and the ball location are uncovered to follow the rules of fractional Brownian motion with a Hurst exponent of H=0.7. The persistence time below which self-similarity holds is found to be several tens of seconds, implying a characteristic time scale that governs far-from-equilibrium motion on a playing field.Comment: Figures 1 and 2 are blurred due to file-size restriction. Studies on swelling-shrinkage and oxidative phosphorylation of liver mitochondria of rat fed on 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene

The swelling-shrinkage and oxidative phosphorylation of rat liver mitochondria affected by 3'-methy1-DAB feeding were observed in correlation with function by the method mentioned, and the following results were obtained: 1. By feeding 3'-methy1-DAB the swelling-shrinkage ability of rat liver mitochondria showed a remarkable alteration reducing in the amplitude. It reduced gradually during the days of feeding, reached the minimum value on 30th day and restored gradually thereafter (in Case 1). 2. ADP/O ratio also decreased by feeding the carcinogen reached the minimum point on 30th day and increased on 38th day showing the similar tendency in the decrease of the swelling-shrinkage amplitude (in Case 1). 3. The mitochondria from the hepatoma, which was induced by 3'-methy1DAB feeding, showed a lower amplitude in swelling-shrinkage with the dropped ADP/O ratio compared with those of mitochondria from liver tissue neighbouring the tumor. 4. The mechanism in the reduction of swelling-shrinkage ability has been discussed in the relation with fatty acid composition of mitochondria which is reported elsewhere. 5. From the above results it is deduced that lowered ability for swellingshrinkage with the reduced oxidative phosphorylation will be somehow related to the mechanism of cancer induction.</p

Subcutaneous Panniculitis-like T-Cell Lymphoma Without Erythema and Subcutaneous Tumors

We report a case of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma with diffuse indurated lesions without erythema. A 27-year-old man was referred to us with a 1-month history of fever, general fatigue and indurated skin lesions. The initial examination revealed indurated skin lesions without erythema and subcutaneous tumors in the right lower abdomen, back and buttocks. Histopathology showed a panniculitis predominantly in lobular pattern, and infiltration of atypical lymphocytes in the subcutaneous tissue. Characteristically, there was rimming of individual fat cells by surrounding atypical lymphocytes. Results of laboratory examinations showed hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS). Based on these findings, we made a diagnosis of subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma without erythema and subcutaneous tumors with HPS. To our knowledge, there has been no report of SPTCL with diffuse indurated lesions without erythema, tumors, or plaque, all of which are considered to be typical characteristics of SPTCL. Positron emission tomography / computed tomography (PET/CT) showed noticeable thickening of diffuse subcutaneous involvement throughout the body. Hence, PET/CT is a useful for the detection of SPTCL as well as its distribution

Bathymetric distribution of aquatic Oligochaeta in Lake Kizaki, Central Japan

Bathymetric distribution of aquatic oligochaetes was studied at 8 stations with different depths (mean depth 16.7 ± 9.4 m, min. 5.3 m, max. 29.4 m) in July 2012 in mesotrophic Lake Kizaki, Nagano Prefecture, Central Japan. The average density was 10424 ± 5346 individuals m-2. Oligochaetes were numerically dominant at all sampling stations. High density, sometimes more than 10000 individuals m-2,was recorded at 3 stations (St. 4, 5, and 6) deeper than 18 m. Maximum density was 20561 ± 13864 individuals m-2 at Station 4 (depth 29.4 m, ignition loss of sediment 13.5%, bottom water temperature 8.1 °C and DO of bottom water 0.12 mg l-1). We identified a total of 5 genera and 7 species belonging to three subfamilies: i.e., 1 species of Naidinae, 2 species of Rhyacodrilinae and 4 species of Tubificinae. Dominant species (in order of abundance) were Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774) (8550 ± 6317 individuals m-2; 82.0%) and Limnodrilus spp. (L. hoffmeisteri Claparède, 1862 and L. claparedeianus Ratzel, 1868) (1710 ± 1383 individuals m-2; 16.4%). Tubifex and Limnodrilus were obtained from every station, and the density of T. tubifex tended to be higher as the depth became greater, while Limnodrilus spp. was also widely distributed, but with a peak value at a depth of 5.3 m in the shallowest station. From the submerged plant zone, Ophidonais serpentina (Müller, 1773) was collected. An earlier study by Hirabayashi & Hayashi (1994) showed that in 1985 the average density of aquatic oligochaetes was 435 ± 428 individuals m-2, oligochaetes dominated in only four locations and were distributed over the whole lake approximately equally. Comparisons of our data with the earlier studies have shown that oligochaete density has increased greatly according to Hirabayashi & Hayashi (1994). We suggest that a decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration of bottom water was due to an increase in organic matter content of the sediment. As a result, T. tubifex could expand their habitats in the profundal zone.ArticleZoosymposia. 9:36-43 (2014)journal articl

Is X-linked Recessive Ichthyosis a High Risk for Basal Cell Carcinoma?

We report a case of X-linked recessive ichthyosis with basal cell carcinoma. An 86-year-old man was referred to our department for evaluation of a 1-year history of an ulcer on his left leg. He had suffered from dry skin with scales on his entire body since childhood. Histopathological examination of the lower leg revealed intradermal proliferation of a solid nest of basaloid cells showing unclear palisading in the periphery. Marked hyperkeratosis and hypergranulosis were also seen in the adjacent dermis. Loss of the steroid sulfatase gene was found on chromosome X. Based on these finding, we made a diagnosis of X-linked recessive ichthyosis with basal cell carcinoma. To our knowledge, there has been no report of X-linked recessive ichthyosis with cutaneous malignancy. We discuss the risk of skin cancer in relation to ichthyosis
