Directional far-field response of a spherical nanoantenna

    Get PDF
We study the directional far-field response of a spherical nanoantenna via engineering the plasmonic nanosphere's distance, size, and material. A unified pattern synthesis approach based on the T-matrix method and the particle swarm optimization is proposed for the directional beamforming of the nanoantenna. The angular response of the directional nanoantenna is very sensitive to the material change but is immunized to the random error of the spatial position of each particle. The physical origin of the high directionality is attributed to the coherent near-field distribution with large correlation length. This work provides the fundamental theory and physics for future nanoantenna design. © 2011 Optical Society of America.published_or_final_versio

ADRC-based model predictive current control for PMSMs fed by three-phase four-switch inverters

© 2016 IEEE.A novel automatic disturbances rejection control (ADRC)-based model predictive current control (MPCC) strategy is developed for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) fed by three-phase four-switch inverters, an after-fault-topology for fault-tolerant three-phase six-switch inverters. The mathematical model of a PMSM fed by a three-phase four-switch inverter is built firstly. Then the ADRC and MPCC are respectively designed, with the former being used to realize disturbance estimation and disturbance compensation while the latter being used to reduce stator current ripple and improve the quality of the torque and speed control. The resultant ADRC-based MPCC PMSM fed by an unhealthy inverter has fault-tolerant effective with dynamical performance very close to an ADRC-based MPCC PMSM fed by a healthy inverter. On the other hand, compared with PI-based MPCC PMSM fed by an unhealthy inverter, it possesses better dynamical response behavior and stronger robustness as well as smaller THD index of three-phase stator current in the presence of variation of load torque. The simulation results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme

Optimization design of a voice coil actuator based on improved SOM

Voice coil actuator is a new kind of direct drive motor. It has many good performances, such as high acceleration and fast response. We present an improved sequential optimization method (SOM) and dimension reduction optimization method to design optimization a cylindrical voice coil actuator in this work. In the implementation, design of experiments (DOE) technique and Kriging approximate model are employed to improve the optimization efficiency. From the discussion, we can see that the proposed methods are very efficient. And computation cost of finite element analysis can be reduced remarkably (more than 2/3 of the cost has been saved) by the proposed methods. © 2011 IEEE

Maximizing investment value of small-scale PV in a smart grid environment

© 2016 IEEE. Determining the optimal size and orientation of small-scale residential based PV arrays will become increasingly complex in the future smart grid environment with the introduction of smart meters and dynamic tariffs. However consumers can leverage the availability of smart meter data to conduct a more detailed exploration of PV investment options for their particular circumstances. In this paper, an optimization method for PV orientation and sizing is proposed whereby maximizing the PV investment value is set as the defining objective. Solar insolation and PV array models are described to form the basis of the PV array optimization strategy. A constrained particle swarm optimization algorithm is selected due to its strong performance in non-linear applications. The optimization algorithm is applied to real-world metered data to quantify the possible investment value of a PV installation under different energy retailers and tariff structures. The arrangement with the highest value is determined to enable prospective small-scale PV investors to select the most cost-effective system

The objective of this study was to establish an efficient and reproducible in vitro plant regeneration for Citrullus lanatus cv. Zaojia. To achieve optimal conditions for adventitious shoot induction, five explants (entire cotyledons, distal cotyledons, proximal cotyledons, cotyledonary node A and cotyledonary node B) were tested on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of growth regulators (0 to 0.2 mg/L IAA and 1.0 to 5.0 mg/L BA), the results showed that entire cotyledons cultured in MS + BA (2.0mg/L) + IAA(0.2mg/L) achieved the highest regenerated rate (89.67%) and the optimal protocol screened in this experiment had 7.69 ± 0.10 shoots per explants. Adventitious shoots were able to elongate both on MS medium with 0.2 mg/L KT and 0.2 mg/L NAA; IBA 0.3mg/L was found to be effective in the production of root. Acclimatized plantlets transferred to pot resumed growth, and their stems and leaves elongated and expanded in one month.Key words: Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thumb.), optimized system, regeneration, cotyledon explants, cotyledonary node

An analysis of the Lowest Total Fertility Rate in Hong Kong SAR

    Get PDF
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Hong Kong has dropped significantly over the past 30 years, from 2.48 births per woman in 1976 to 0.966 in 2005, which is one of the lowest in the world. It is mainly caused by the change of marital distribution which has contributed to about 56% of the decline in the total fertility rate for the period 1976-2001. Delay of marriage and reduction in the marital fertility rate have also been shown to be two major causes for the low TFR. A new measure, called a weighted total marital fertility rate (WTMFR), is introduced such that change of age at marriage and the fertility within marriage can be factored in explaining the decline of the fertility rate. The delay of marriage has contributed to about 52% of the reduction of WTMFR whereas the reduction of the fertility within marriage has accounted for the other 48%. Apparently, the proportion of women remaining single has been stabilized and leveled off recently. However, the preference of having smaller family size has become a norm rather than an exception. It is very unlikely to see a rebound of fertility among the Hong Kong women in the near future if there is no increase in marriages or births outside wedlock. Encouraging more births among married women so as to increase fertility is expected to have limited impact.Age at first marriage, decomposition, Hong Kong, Total fertility rate, Weighted total marital fertility rate
