    Health, Identification and Pleasure: An Ethnographic Study on the Self-Management and Construction of Taijiquan Park Culture Space

    The public space of a park is one of the most important carriers of social interaction and cultural practice in urban areas. Taking an ethnography of Taijiquan in Chengdu (China) as a case study, this article explores the production of Taijiquan’s “park culture space” (PCS). Our analysis revealed that the development of PCS not only transformed “public space” in the park to a “private space” through Taijiquan practice and exchange but also transformed “material space” in the park into “social space” with identification. We found that working on the process of self-managing Taijiquan’s “park culture space” included the democratic operation mechanism of communication and consultation, the cooperative operation mechanism of mutual benefit, and the incentive operation mechanism of balancing interests. Taijiquan’s “park culture space” was the reproduction of public space that was not only bonded with Taijiquan practice but was also reconstructed and expanded by Taijiquan practitioners. Furthermore, it involved the return of Taijiquan practitioners’ historical memory and collective life experience alongside the construction of Taijiquan practitioners’ group identity and the development of self-organization

    A mixture of variational canonical correlation analysis for nonlinear and quality-relevant process monitoring

    Proper monitoring of quality-related variables in industrial processes is nowadays one of the main worldwide challenges with significant safety and efficiency implications.Variational Bayesian mixture of canonical correlation analysis (VBMCCA)-based process monitoring method was proposed in this paper to predict and diagnose these hard-to-measure quality-related variables simultaneously. Use of Student's t-distribution, rather than Gaussian distribution, in the VBMCCA model makes the proposed process monitoring scheme insensitive to disturbances, measurement noises, and model discrepancies. A sequential perturbation (SP) method together with derived parameter distribution of VBMCCA is employed to approach the uncertainty levels, which is able to provide a confidence interval around the predicted values and give additional control line, rather than just a certain absolute control limit, for process monitoring. The proposed process monitoring framework has been validated in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) simulated by benchmark simulation model with abrupt changes imposing on a sensor and a real WWTP with filamentous sludge bulking. The results show that the proposed methodology is capable of detecting sensor faults and process faults with satisfactory accuracy

    TriCurin, a novel formulation of curcumin, epicatechin gallate, and resveratrol, inhibits the tumorigenicity of human papillomaviruspositive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

    Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most prevalent cancer worldwide with about 600,000 new cases diagnosed in the last year. The incidence of human papillomavirus-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HPV-positive HNSCC) has rapidly increased over the past 30 years prompting the suggestion that an epidemic may be on the horizon. Therefore, there is a clinical need to develop alternate therapeutic strategies to manage the growing number of HPV-positive HNSCC patients. TriCurin is a composition of three food-derived polyphenols in unique stoichiometric proportions consisting of curcumin from the spice turmeric, resveratrol from red grapes, and epicatechin gallate from green tea. Cell viability, clonogenic survival, and tumorsphere formation were inhibited and significant apoptosis was induced by TriCurin in UMSCC47 and UPCI:SCC090 HPV-positive HNSCC cells. Moreover, TriCurin decreased HPV16E6 and HPV16E7 and increased p53 levels. In a pre-clinical animal model of HPV-positive HNSCC, intratumoral injection of TriCurin significantly inhibited tumor growth by 85.5% compared to vehicle group (P \u3c 0.05, n = 7). Our results demonstrate that TriCurin is a potent anti-tumor agent for HPV-positive HNSCC. Further development of TriCurin as a novel anti-cancer therapeutic to manage the HPV-positive HNSCC population is warranted

    Oxysophocarpine Retards the Growth and Metastasis of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma by Targeting the Nrf2/HO-1 Axis

    Background/Aims: Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an oncogene in various types of cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Oxysophocarpine (OSC) is a natural alkaloid that has multiple pharmacological activities. However, the biological functions and molecular mechanism underlying the effects of OSC on the growth and metastasis of OSCC are unclear. Methods: Nrf2 levels were determined in OSCC tissues and non-cancerous specimens by quantitative real-time PCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays. The effects of OSC on OSCC cell growth and metastasis were explored (1) using 5-ethynyl-20-deoxyuridine staining and Cell Counting Kit-8, colony formation, flow cytometry, wound-healing, Transwell, and tube formation assays in vitro; and (2) by establishing a xenograft nude mouse model in vivo. The molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of OSC on the growth and metastasis of OSCC were investigated in vitro by western blotting, caspase-3 activity, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and in vivo by western blotting and IHC assays. Results: The expression levels of Nrf2 in OSCC tissues and in cell lines were much higher than in non-cancerous tissues and normal oral keratinocytes. The upregulation of Nrf2 was positively correlated with a high incidence of lymph node metastasis and advanced histological grade and TNM stage, but inversely associated with differentiation and survival of OSCC patients. OSC reduced the expression of Nrf2 and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) in OSCC cells. OSC also inhibited proliferation, migration, invasion, and pro-angiogenesis of OSCC cells. Moreover, OSC induced cell cycle arrest, enhanced apoptosis of OSCC cells in vitro, and decreased OSCC tumor growth in vivo. Mechanically, OSC reduced the aggressive behavior of OSCC cells by inactivation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence that OSC inhibits the growth and metastasis of OSCC by targeting the Nrf2/ HO-1 axis, suggesting that OSC may be a potential therapeutic agent for OSCC

    Embracing the Market: Entry into Self-Employment in Transitional China, 1978-1996

    This paper introduces labor market transition as an intervening process by which the macro institutional transition to a market economy alters social stratification outcome. Rather than directly addressing income distribution, it examines the pattern of workers’ entry into self-employment in reform-era China (1978-1996), focusing on rural-urban differences and the temporal trend. Analyses of data from a national representative survey in China show that education, party membership and cadre status all deter urban workers’ entry into self-employment, while education promotes rural workers’ entry into self-employment. As marketization proceeds, the rate of entry into self-employment increases in both rural and urban China, but urban workers are increasingly more likely to take advantages of the new market opportunities. In urban China, college graduates and cadres are still less likely to be involved in self-employment, but they are becoming more likely to do so in the later phase of reform.     Optimal Inspection and Replacement Policy Based on Experimental Degradation Data with Covariates

    International audienceIn this paper, a novel maintenance model is proposed for single-unit systems with atypical degradation path of which the pattern is influenced by inspections. After each inspection, the system degradation is assumed to decrease by a random value instantaneously. Meanwhile, the degrading rate is elevated due to the inspection. Considering the double effects of inspections, we develop a parameter estimation procedure for such systems from experimental data obtained via accelerated degradation tests with environmental covariates. Next, the inspection and replacement policy is optimized with the objective to minimize the expected long-run cost rate (ELRCR). Inspections are assumed to be non-periodically scheduled. A numerical algorithm that combines analytical and simulation methods is presented to evaluate the ELRCR. Afterward, we investigate the robustness of maintenance policies for such systems by taking the parameter uncertainty into account with the aid of large-sample approximation and parametric bootstrapping.     Improvement of vapor-phase silylation and thermal stability of silylated MCM-22 zeolite

    The method of vapor-phase silylation over as-made MCM-22 was improved through the replacement of deionized water with NaOH solution that absorbed HCl produced during the vapor-phase silylation. Also, the thermal stability of silylated MCM-22 was investigated by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption, pyridine adsorption and desorption followed by infrared measurement and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The results showed that this improvement was beneficial for dichlorodimethylsilane molecules to enter the interlayer of MCM-22 zeolite to form pillaring structure. Both the interlayer pillaring structure and acidity of silylated MCM-22 varied with increasing thermal treatment temperature from 600 to 750 A degrees C. Specifically, the interlayer pillaring Si groups were thermally stable below 650 A degrees C, and damaged gradually with the increase of thermal treatment temperature from 650 to 750 A degrees C, leading to gradual decrease of the specific surface area and volume corresponding to interlayer supercages. At 750 A degrees C, the interlayer pillaring structure was destroyed completely, whereas the MWW structure was still maintained well. As to the variations of acid sites with thermal treatment temperature, different trend was observed. The amount of weak and strong Bronsted acid sites, as well as that of strong Lewis acid sites decreased gradually with increasing thermal treatment temperature to 650 A degrees C, but remained almost unchanged when the temperature was further increased to 750 A degrees C

    Genetic differences and variation in polysaccharide antioxidant activity found in germplasm resources for Job’s tears (Coix lacryma-jobi L.)

    Job’s tears (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) is an ancient plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. In this study, using 11 Chinese germplasm resources for Job’s tears, we examined genetic differences among the germplasms and differences in the in vitro antioxidant activities of coixan, and sought to identify inter-relationships between these two variables. We found that the intraspecific conservation of DNA sequences was high, with ITS regions and cpDNA trnL-F and trnH-psbA non-coding sequences showing no sequence variation, whereas the GBSSI gene showed a certain degree of variation among the different germplasms. EST-SSR analysis also revealed a relatively low level of genetic diversity among the germplasms. Coixan was shown to be an efficient antioxidant, and among the germplasms examined, the LNYX, FJPC, and AHBZ had the highest antioxidant activities. However, none of the four in vitro antioxidant activity indices we assessed were significantly correlated with the geographical origin of the germplasm (latitude and longitude); however, one of them was significantly associated with genetic diversity. Although the factors affecting the antioxidant activity of coixan are complex, the role of heredity should not be ignored. Our findings have implications for the scientific evaluation, identification, and sustainable utilization of the germplasm resources for Job’s tears.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.     Crotonaldehyde induces autophagy-mediated cytotoxicity in human bronchial epithelial cells via PI3K, AMPK and MAPK pathways

    Crotonaldehyde is an ubiquitous hazardous pollutant in the environment which can be produced naturally, artificially and endogenously. Acute exposure of crotonaldehyde was reported to induce severe lung injury in humans and experimental animals. However, the exact toxicity mechanisms of crotonaldehyde in organisms have not been fully explored. In the present study, we explored the role autophagy played in the cytotoxicity induced by crotonaldehyde in human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B), and the pathways that mediated autophagy, including the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway, the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, were examined and validated. We found that crotonaldehyde induced cytotoxicity and autophagy simultaneously in BEAS-2B cells, and blockage of autophagic flux significantly elevated the viability of BEAS-2B exposed to high concentrations of crotonaldehyde. Crotonaldehyde down regulated the activity of PI3K pathway, and elevated the activities of AMPK and MAPK pathways. Pretreatment of specific agonist or antagonist of these pathways could inhibit autophagy and partly improve the viability. These results suggested that acute exposure of crotonaldehyde induced cell death mediated by autophagy, which might be helpful to elucidate the toxicity mechanisms of crotonaldehyde and contribute to environmental and human health risk assessment.
