    Image processing techniques applied to modern quality control are described together with the development of feature extraction algorithms for automatic visual inspection. A real-time image processing hardware system already available in the Department of Production Technology is described and has been tested systematically for establishing an optimal threshold function. This systematic testing has been concerned with edge strength and system noise information. With the a priori information of system signal and noise, non-linear threshold functions have been established for real time edge detection. The performance of adaptive thresholding is described and the usefulness of this nonlinear approach is demonstrated from results using machined test samples. Examination and comparisons of thresholding techniques applied to several edge detection operators are presented. It is concluded that, the Roberts' operator with a non-linear thresholding function has the advantages of being simple, fast, accurate and cost effective in automatic visual inspection

    Universal Elasticity and Fluctuations of Nematic Gels

    We study elasticity of spontaneously orientationally-ordered amorphous solids, characterized by a vanishing transverse shear modulus, as realized for example by nematic elastomers and gels. We show that local heterogeneities and elastic nonlinearities conspire to lead to anomalous nonlocal universal elasticity controlled by a nontrivial infared fixed point. Namely, at long scales, such solids are characterized by universal shear and bending moduli that, respectively, vanish and diverge at long scales, are universally incompressible and exhibit a universal negative Poisson ratio and a non-Hookean elasticity down to arbitrarily low strains. Based on expansion about five dimensions, we argue that the nematic order is stable to thermal fluctuation and local hetergeneities down to d_lc < 3.Comment: 4 RevTeX pgs, submitted to PR

    B→KB\to K Transition Form Factor with Tensor Current within the kTk_T Factorization Approach

    In the paper, we apply the kTk_T factorization approach to deal with the B→KB\to K transition form factor with tensor current in the large recoil regions. Main uncertainties for the estimation are discussed and we obtain FTB→K(0)=0.25±0.01±0.02F_T^{B\to K}(0)=0.25\pm0.01\pm0.02, where the first error is caused by the uncertainties from the pionic wave functions and the second is from that of the B-meson wave functions.     Anomalous elasticity of nematic elastomers

    We study the anomalous elasticity of nematic elastomers by employing the powers of renormalized field theory. Using general arguments of symmetry and relevance, we introduce a minimal Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson elastic energy for nematic elastomers. Performing a diagrammatic low temperature expansion, we analyze the fluctuations of the displacement fields at and below the upper critical dimension 3. Our analysis reveals an anomaly of certain elastic moduli in the sense that they depend on the length scale. In d=3d = 3 this dependence is logarithmic and below d=3d=3 it is of power law type with anomalous scaling exponents. One of the 4 relevant shear moduli vanishes at long length scales whereas the only relevant bending modulus diverges.Comment: 4 page

    Information on the Pion Distribution Amplitude from the Pion-Photon Transition Form Factor with the Belle and BaBar Data

    The pion-photon transition form factor (TFF) provides strong constraints on the pion distribution amplitude (DA). We perform an analysis of all existing data (CELLO, CLEO, BaBar, Belle) on the pion-photon TFF by means of light-cone pQCD approach in which we include the next-to-leading order correction to the valence-quark contribution and estimate the non-valence-quark contribution by a phenomenological model based on the TFF's limiting behavior at both Q2→0Q^2\to 0 and Q2→∞Q^2\to\infty. At present, the pion DA is not definitely determined, it is helpful to have a pion DA model that can mimic all the suggested behaviors, especially to agree with the constraints from the pion-photon TFF in whole measured region within a consistent way. For the purpose, we adopt the conventional model for pion wavefunction/DA that has been constructed in our previous paper \cite{hw1}, whose broadness is controlled by a parameter BB. We fix the DA parameters by using the CELLO, CLEO, BABAR and Belle data within the smaller Q2Q^2 region (Q2≤15Q^2 \leq 15 GeV2^2), where all the data are consistent with each other. And then the pion-photon TFF is extrapolated into larger Q2Q^2 region. We observe that the BABAR favors B=0.60B=0.60 which has the behavior close to the Chernyak-Zhitnitsky DA, whereas the recent Belle favors B=0.00B=0.00 which is close to the asymptotic DA. We need more accurate data at large Q2Q^2 region to determine the precise value of BB, and the definite behavior of pion DA can be concluded finally by the consistent data in the coming future.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.     Betalains, a class of water-soluble nitrogen-containing pigments, replace anthocyanins and serve the analogous functions in 13 families of the order, caryophyllales. They modulate the attractive appearance of plants and protect them against destructive oxidative damage. Their antioxidant roles, radicalscavenging properties in human health and their potential uses in food and pharmaceutical industries have made significant progress achieved in the detection, purification, quantification, structure elucidation of betalains, and in particular in the understanding of biosynthetic pathways of the pigments,the enzymes and their genes involved in the pathways.
