A new, analysis-based, change of measure for tandem queues
In this paper, we introduce a simple analytical approximation for the overflow probability of a two-node tandem queue. From this, we derive a change of measure, which turns out to have good performance in almost the entire parameter space. The form of our new change of measure sheds an interesting new light on earlier changes of measure for the same problem, because here the transition zone from one measure to another - that they all have - arises naturally.\u
Alternative proof and interpretations for a recent state-dependent importance sampling scheme
Recently, a state-dependent change of measure for simulating overflows in the two-node tandem queue was proposed by Dupuis et al. (Ann. Appl. Probab. 17(4):1306â1346, 2007), together with a proof of its asymptotic optimality. In the present paper, we present an alternative, shorter and simpler proof. As a side result, we obtain interpretations for several of the quantities involved in the change of measure in terms of likelihood ratios
The need for a supply of high quality organic vegetable seeds
Production of high quality organic vegetable seeds encounters several challenges. Research is performed to support seed companies in producing vigorous and healthy organic vegetable seeds. Examples are provided with respect to research on seed vigour, determining critical control points to avoid disease transmission to the seeds, seed treatments with natu-ral compounds, new seed sorting techniques and enhancement of the natural plant defence. It is noticed that the restrictions in EU regulation 2092/91 on organic production are at present blocking the use of promising natural and sustainable components for seed treatments

Photon-photon correlations and entanglement in doped photonic crystals
We consider a photonic crystal (PC) doped with four-level atoms whose
intermediate transition is coupled near-resonantly with a photonic band-gap
edge. We show that two photons, each coupled to a different atomic transition
in such atoms, can manifest strong phase or amplitude correlations: One photon
can induce a large phase shift on the other photon or trigger its absorption
and thus operate as an ultrasensitive nonlinear photon-switch. These features
allow the creation of entangled two-photon states and have unique advantages
over previously considered media: (i) no control lasers are needed; (ii) the
system parameters can be chosen to cause full two-photon entanglement via
absorption; (iii) a number of PCs can be combined in a network.Comment: Modified, expanded text; added reference
Thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet coupled to bond phonons
By applying a quantum Monte Carlo procedure based on the loop algorithm we
investigate thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic
S=1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to Einstein phonons on the bonds. The
temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, mean phonon occupation
numbers and the specific heat are discussed in detail. We study the spin
correlation function both in the regime of weak and strong spin phonon coupling
(coupling constants g=0.1, w=8J and g=2, w=2J, respectively). A finite size
scaling analysis of the correlation length indicates that in both cases long
range Neel order is established in the ground state.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure
