Performance Theory and Information Literacy: Using the Method to Establish Rapport with Students

    Get PDF
First impressions matter. Instruction librarians face unfamiliar audiences who can be apathetic or even hostile to learning research skills. By deliberately establishing ourselves as competent and charming at the beginning of each session, librarians can create a positive learning environment in which apathy and hostility melt away. Stand-up comedy experts Carter and Ajaye, as well as acting theorists Strasberg and Adler have developed approaches for influencing first impressions. This lively workshop will draw from these two disciplines to provide a practical method that instruction librarians can employ to produce original and entertaining self-introductions

Gaining and maintaining student attention during information literacy instruction can be a challenge. To address this challenge, entertainment value, as well as instructional efficacy, ought to be factored into assessment and design of instructional materials. Information literacy instruction should be as much about building bridges with students as it is about imparting useful information and skills. Entertaining while educating (edutaining), promotes student attention and helps build a positive learning environment. In this interactive session, attendees will participate in a practical approach to producing creative and entertaining content for information literacy instruction

Must It Be Perfect? An Analysis of Statements of Purpose Submitted to UNC SILS, 2003-2007

The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the topics and rhetorical approaches used in statements of purpose (SPs) submitted to the UNC School of Library and Information Science (SILS) over the last four years. This study was motivated by the lack of useful guidelines available to help applicants write competitive SPs, as well as a dearth of research on the subject of personal statements within library and information science (LIS) as a field. Using a combined method of content analysis and close reading, this study analyzed a corpus of SPs and UNC SILS faculty responses to questionnaires. The findings of this study describe general and specific qualities possessed by successful SPs submitted to SILS' Master's program
