    BaBar: sin(2beta+gamma)

The time-dependent CP asymmetries in fully reconstructed B0 --> D(*)pi/rho decays (new preliminary result), and in partially reconstructed B0 --> D(*)pi decays, are measured with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory at SLAC, using 232 million Y(4S) -> BB decays. We combine the above results and, using other measurements and theoretical assumptions, we interpret them in terms of the angles of the unitarity triangle describing the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. We find |sin(2beta+gamma)|>0.64(0.42) at 68%(90%) confidence level using a frequentistic approach and |2beta+gamma|=(90 +- 43)o using a Bayesian approach.Comment: 4 pages, 1 encapsulated postscript figure, contributed to the Proceedings of EPS200

Measurements of the Cerenkov light emitted by a TeO2 crystal

Bolometers have proven to be good instruments to search for rare processes because of their excellent energy resolution and their extremely low intrinsic background. In this kind of detectors, the capability of discriminating alpha particles from electrons represents an important aspect for the background reduction. One possibility for obtaining such a discrimination is provided by the detection of the Cerenkov light which, at the low energies of the natural radioactivity, is only emitted by electrons. In this paper, the results of the analysis of the light emitted by a TeO2 crystal at room temperature when transversed by a cosmic ray are reported. Light is promptly emitted after the particle crossing and a clear evidence of its directionality is also found. These results represent a strong indication that Cerenkov light is the main, if not even the only, component of the light signal in a TeO2 crystal. They open the possibility to make large improvements in the performance of experiments based on this kind of material

Carbon nanotubes as target for directional detection of light WIMP

In this paper I will briefly introduce the idea of using Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) as target for the detection of low mass WIMPs with the additional information of directionality. I will also present the experimental efforts of developing a Time Projection Chamber with a CNT target inside and the results of a test beam at the Beam Test Facility of INFN-LNF.Comment: 3 figures, IFAE2017 poster session proceeding

Marriage, Labor Supply and the Dynamics of the Social Safety Net

The 1996 PRWORA reform introduced time limits on the receipt of welfare in the United States. We use variation by state and across demographic groups to provide reduced form evidence showing that such limits led to a fall in welfare claims (partly due to \banking" benefits for future use), a rise in employment, and a decline in divorce rates. We then specify and estimate a life-cycle model of marriage, labor supply and divorce under limited commitment to better understand the mechanisms behind these behavioral responses, carry out counterfactual analysis with longer run impacts and evaluate the welfare effects of the program. Based on the model, which reproduces the reduced form estimates, we show that among low educated women, instead of relying on TANF, single mothers work more, more mothers remain married, some move to relying only on food stamps and, in ex-ante welfare terms, women are worse off

Targeting hif-1α regulatory pathways as a strategy to hamper tumor-microenvironment interactions in cll

The hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) and the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis regulate the interaction of chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells and the tumor microenvironment. However, the interconnections occurring between HIF-1 and the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis are not fully elucidated. Here, we demonstrate that the CXCL12/CXCR4 axis plays a pivotal role in the positive regulation of the α subunit of HIF-1 (HIF-1α) that occurs in CLL cells co-cultured with stromal cells (SC). Inhibitors acting at different levels on CXCR4 downstream signalling counteract the SC-induced HIF-1α upregulation in CLL cells, also hindering the SC-mediated pro-survival effect. HIF-1α inhibition also exerts off-tumor effects on the SC component, inducing the downregulation of target genes, including CXCL12. Consistently, our data show that pretreatment of leukemic cells and/or SC with idelalisib effectively abrogates the SC-mediated survival support. A combined on-tumor and off-tumor inhibition of HIF-1α was also observed in idelalisib-treated patients, who showed, along with a downregulation of HIF-1α target genes in leukemic cells, a significant decrease in CXCL12 serum concentration and changes in the bone marrow microenvironment. Our data demonstrate that the targeting of HIF-1α or its regulatory pathways acts at the tumor- and SC-level, and may be an appealing strategy to overcome the microenvironment-mediated protection of CLL cells
