    Quantum circuits with uniformly controlled one-qubit gates

    Uniformly controlled one-qubit gates are quantum gates which can be represented as direct sums of two-dimensional unitary operators acting on a single qubit. We present a quantum gate array which implements any n-qubit gate of this type using at most 2^{n-1} - 1 controlled-NOT gates, 2^{n-1} one-qubit gates and a single diagonal n-qubit gate. The circuit is based on the so-called quantum multiplexor, for which we provide a modified construction. We illustrate the versatility of these gates by applying them to the decomposition of a general n-qubit gate and a local state preparation procedure. Moreover, we study their implementation using only nearest-neighbor gates. We give upper bounds for the one-qubit and controlled-NOT gate counts for all the aforementioned applications. In all four cases, the proposed circuit topologies either improve on or achieve the previously reported upper bounds for the gate counts.     New procedures for testing whether stock price processes are martingales

    We propose procedures for testing whether stock price processes are martingales based on limit order type betting strategies. We first show that the null hypothesis of martingale property of a stock price process can be tested based on the capital process of a betting strategy. In particular with high frequency Markov type strategies we find that martingale null hypotheses are rejected for many stock price processes

    Tomograms and other transforms. A unified view

    A general framework is presented which unifies the treatment of wavelet-like, quasidistribution, and tomographic transforms. Explicit formulas relating the three types of transforms are obtained. The case of transforms associated to the symplectic and affine groups is treated in some detail. Special emphasis is given to the properties of the scale-time and scale-frequency tomograms.     Aggressive prevention and preemptive management of vascular complications after pediatric liver transplantation: A major impact on graft survival and long-term outcome

    Vascular complications are a major cause of patient and graft loss after LTs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a multimodal perioperative strategy aimed at reducing the incidence of vascular complications. A total of 126 first isolated LTs-performed between November 2008 and December 2015-were retrospectively analyzed. A minimum follow-up period of 24 months was analyzable for 124/126 patients (98.4%). The aggressive preemptive strategy consisted of identifying and immediately managing any problem and any abnormality in the vascular flow, in any of the hepatic vessels, and at any time after the liver graft revascularization. As a result, with a median follow-up of 57 months (3-112 months), not a single graft has been lost from vascular or biliary problems. The actuarial 8-year graft survival is 96.5%. These results have shown that a combination of technical attention, medical prevention, an early diagnosis, and rapid interventions reduced the negative impact of vascular problems on the outcome of both grafts and patients

    Labour market experiences of young UK Bangladeshi men: Identity, inclusion and exclusion in inner-city London

    Detailed qualitative data are used to explore the processes perpetuatinglabour market disadvantage among young UK-Bangladeshi men living in central London. Strong forces of inclusion within the Bangladeshi community are found to interact with forces of exclusion from ‘mainstream’ society to constrain aspirations and limit opportunities. Though diverse forms of young Bangladeshi masculinity are found, a common pattern is heavy dependency on intra-ethnic networks. Negative experiences of and isolation from ‘mainstream’ society further reinforce reliance on ‘our own people’. However, acute ambivalence towards belonging to a dense Bangladeshi community exists, exemplified in the widespread denigration of the restaurant trade. Many respondents express the desire to ‘break out’ and access new experiences. The findings support current policy emphasis on ‘connecting people to work’ but highlight the more fundamental need to connect people across ethnic boundaries. The paper urges researchers to ‘unpack’ ethnicity to consider carefully what ethnic identity implies in terms of access to resources and opportunities for different individuals in different contexts in order better to understand the diversity of labour market outcomes and the persistence of disadvantage

    Time-frequency detection of Gravitational Waves

    We present a time-frequency method to detect gravitational wave signals in interferometric data. This robust method can detect signals from poorly modeled and unmodeled sources. We evaluate the method on simulated data containing noise and signal components. The noise component approximates initial LIGO interferometer noise. The signal components have the time and frequency characteristics postulated by Flanagan and Hughes for binary black hole coalescence. The signals correspond to binaries with total masses between 45M⊙45 M_\odot to 70M⊙70 M_\odot and with (optimal filter) signal-to-noise ratios of 7 to 12. The method is implementable in real time, and achieves a coincident false alarm rate for two detectors ≈\approx 1 per 475 years. At this false alarm rate, the single detector false dismissal rate for our signal model is as low as 5.3% at an SNR of 10. We expect to obtain similar or better detection rates with this method for any signal of similar power that satisfies certain adiabaticity criteria. Because optimal filtering requires knowledge of the signal waveform to high precision, we argue that this method is likely to detect signals that are undetectable by optimal filtering, which is at present the best developed detection method for transient sources of gravitational waves.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, uses REVTE

    Numerical Estimation of the Asymptotic Behaviour of Solid Partitions of an Integer

    The number of solid partitions of a positive integer is an unsolved problem in combinatorial number theory. In this paper, solid partitions are studied numerically by the method of exact enumeration for integers up to 50 and by Monte Carlo simulations using Wang-Landau sampling method for integers up to 8000. It is shown that, for large n, ln[p(n)]/n^(3/4) = 1.79 \pm 0.01, where p(n) is the number of solid partitions of the integer n. This result strongly suggests that the MacMahon conjecture for solid partitions, though not exact, could still give the correct leading asymptotic behaviour.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, revtex
