Towards a Secure Smart Grid Storage Communications Gateway
This research in progress paper describes the role of cyber security measures
undertaken in an ICT system for integrating electric storage technologies into
the grid. To do so, it defines security requirements for a communications
gateway and gives detailed information and hands-on configuration advice on
node and communication line security, data storage, coping with backend M2M
communications protocols and examines privacy issues. The presented research
paves the road for developing secure smart energy communications devices that
allow enhancing energy efficiency. The described measures are implemented in an
actual gateway device within the HORIZON 2020 project STORY, which aims at
developing new ways to use storage and demonstrating these on six different
demonstration sites.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
An Overview of Wireless IoT Protocol Security in the Smart Home Domain
While the application of IoT in smart technologies becomes more and more
proliferated, the pandemonium of its protocols becomes increasingly confusing.
More seriously, severe security deficiencies of these protocols become evident,
as time-to- market is a key factor, which satisfaction comes at the price of a
less thorough security design and testing. This applies especially to the smart
home domain, where the consumer-driven market demands quick and cheap
solutions. This paper presents an overview of IoT application domains and
discusses the most important wireless IoT protocols for smart home, which are
KNX-RF, EnOcean, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread. Finally, it describes the security
features of said protocols and compares them with each other, giving advice on
whose protocols are more suitable for a secure smart home.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Threat Modelling and Beyond-Novel Approaches to Cyber Secure the Smart Energy System
Smart Grids (SGs) represent electrical power systems that incorporate increased information processing and efficient technological solutions. The integration of local prosumers, demand response systems and storage allows novel possibilities with regard to energy balancing and optimization of grid operations. Unfortunately, the dependence on IT leaves the SG exposed to security violations. In this paper, we contribute to this challenge and provide a methodology for systematic risk assessment of cyber attacks in SG systems. We propose a threat model and identify possible vulnerabilities in low-voltage distribution grids. Then, we calculate exploitation probabilities from realistic attack scenarios. Lastly, we apply formal verification to check the stochastic model against attack properties. The obtained results provide insight into potential threats and the likeliness of successful attacks. We elaborate on the effects of a security violation with regard to security and privacy of energy clients. In the aftermath, we discuss future considerations for improving security in the critical energy sector
Unified Access to Heterogeneous Audiovisual Archives
In this paper, an integrated information system is presented that offers enhanced search and retrieval capabilities to users of heterogeneous digital audiovisual (a/v) archives. This innovative system exploits the advances in handlings a/v content and related metadata, as introduced by MPEG-4 and worked out by MPEG-7, to offer advanced services characterized by the tri-fold semantic phrasing of the request (query), unified handling and personalized response. The proposed system is targeting the intelligent extraction of semantic information from a/v and text related data taking into account the nature of the queries that users my issue, and the context determined by user profiles. It also provides a personalization process of the response in order to provide end_users with desired information. From a technical point of view, the FAETHON system plays the role of an intermediate access server residing between the end users and multiple heterogeneous audiovisual archives organized according to the new MPEG standards
