    Effect of Static Disorder in an Electron Fabry-Perot Interferometer with Two Quantum Scattering Centers

    In a recent paper -- F. Ciccarello \emph{et al.}, New J. Phys. \textbf{8}, 214 (2006) -- we have demonstrated that the electron transmission properties of a one-dimensional (1D) wire with two identical embedded spin-1/2 impurities can be significantly affected by entanglement between the spins of the scattering centers. Such effect is of particular interest in the control of transmission of quantum information in nanostructures and can be used as a detection scheme of maximally entangled states of two localized spins. In this letter, we relax the constraint that the two magnetic impurities are equal and investigate how the main results presented in the above paper are affected by a static disorder in the exchange coupling constants of the impurities. Good robustness against deviation from impurity symmetry is found for both the entanglement dependent transmission and the maximally entangled states generation scheme.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Point-contact spectroscopy on URu2_2Si2_2

    Tunnel and point contact experiments have been made in a URu2_2Si2_2 single crystal along the c-axis. The experiments were performed changing temperature and contact size in a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. A resonance develops at the Fermi level at T∌60T\sim 60 K. This resonance splits and becomes asymmetric when the 17.5 K phase transition is crossed. These results are consistent with the existence of Kondo like bound states of the U4+^{4+} ionic configurations and the conduction electrons. Below the transition, these configurations are split by the development of quadrupolar ordering. The peak separation can be interpreted as a direct measurement of the order parameter. Measurements on a policrystalline UAu_2Si_2$ sample are also reported, with a comparative study of the behavior of both materials.Comment: 4 pages (Latex) + 2 postscript figure

    All-optical trapping and acceleration of heavy particles

    A scheme for fast, compact, and controllable acceleration of heavy particles in vacuum is proposed, in which two counterpropagating lasers with variable frequencies drive a beat-wave structure with variable phase velocity, thus allowing for trapping and acceleration of heavy particles, such as ions or muons. Fine control over the energy distribution and the total charge of the beam is obtained via tuning of the frequency variation. The acceleration scheme is described with a one-dimensional theory, providing the general conditions for trapping and scaling laws for the relevant features of the particle beam. Two-dimensional, electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations confirm the validity and the robustness of the physical mechanism.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to appear in New Journal of Physic

    The Extinction Towards the GRB970228 Field

    We determine the local galactic extinction towards the field of gamma-ray burst GRB970228 using a variety of methods. We develop a maximum likelihood method for measuring the extinction by comparing galaxy counts in the field of interest to those in a field of known extinction, and apply this method to the GRB970228 field. We also measure the extinction by comparing the observed stellar spectral energy distributions of stars in the GRB970228 field to the spectral energy distribution of library spectra of the same spectral type. Finally we estimate the extinction using the Balmer emission line ratios of a galaxy in the GRB970228 field, and the neutral hydrogen column density and amount of infrared dust emission toward this field. Combining the results of these methods, we find a best-fit galactic extinction in the optical of AV=1.19−0.17+0.10A_V=1.19^{+0.10}_{-0.17}, which implies a a substantial dimming and change of the spectral slope of the intrinsic GRB970228 afterglow.Comment: 22 pages, including 7 figures.     Plantas transgĂȘnicas de Coffea canephora P. resistentes ao herbicida glufosinato de amĂŽnio foram regeneradas a partir de explantes foliares cocultivados com Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA105 contendo o plasmĂ­dio pCAMBIA3301, que contĂ©m os genes bar e uidA ambos sob controle do promotor 35S ou pIBI3 (3300 contendo o gene da ACC oxidase, antisenso) ou ainda bombardeados com o plasmĂ­dio pCAMBIA3301. EmbriogĂȘnese somĂĄtica direta foi induzida no meio contendo ÂŒ dos macros e metade dos micronutrientes do meio MS, constituintes orgĂąnicos do meio B5 e 30 g.L 1 de sacarose, suplementado com 5mM N 6 ? (2isopentenil) adenina (2iP) e 10 mM de glufosinato de amĂŽnio para seleção de embriĂ”es transgĂȘnicos putativos. A presença e a integração do gene bar foram confirmados pelas anĂĄlises de PCR e Southern blot.     Electron--phonon coupling and anharmonic effects in metal clusters

    The periods of the harmonic oscillations of the ion core of charged sodium clusters around the equilibrium shapes are considered. It is found that these periods are of the order of magnitude of the experimentally measured relaxation times of the plasmons, which suggests the importance of the electron-ion coupling and stresses the role played by the electron-phonon interaction in the dissipation of the plasmon energy.     Discovery of CH and OH in the -513 km s-1 Ejecta of Eta Carinae

    The very massive star, Eta Carinae, is enshrouded in an unusual complex of stellar ejecta, which is highly depleted in C and O, and enriched in He and N. This circumstellar gas gives rise to distinct absorption components corresponding to at least 20 different velocities along the line-of-sight. The velocity component at -513 kms-1 exhibits very low ionization with predominantly neutral species of iron-peak elements. Our statistical equilibrium/photoionization modeling indicates that the low temperature (T = 760 K) and high density (n_H=10^7 cm^-3) of the -513 kms-1 component is conducive to molecule formation including those with the elements C and O. Examination of echelle spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the confirms the model's predictions. The molecules, H_2, CH, and most likely OH, have been identified in the -513 kms-1 absorption spectrum. This paper presents the analysis of the HST/STIS spectra with the deduced column densities for CH, OH and C I, and upper limit for CO. It is quite extraordinary to see molecular species in a cool environment at such a high velocity. The sharp molecular and ionic absorptions in this extensively CNO- processed material offers us a unique environment for studying the chemistry, dust formation processes, and nucleosynthesis in the ejected layers of a highly evolved massive star.Comment: tentatively scheduled for the ApJ 1 September 2005, v630, 1 issu
