    Dynamics of learning motives and barriers in the context of changing human life roles

    This paper promotes a theoretical discussion that focuses on the motives and barriers that make impact on adults learning as well as on their dynamics related to the change of social roles. The adult learning motives and barriers change and vary according to the prevailing social roles at different periods of one’s life. This dynamics of adult learning motives and barriers is mostly influenced by the importance and compatibility of acquired social roles, responsibility areas and spaces of a person and other factors. The qualitative data was gathered in March – April 2016 in Kaunas, Lithuania. The sample consisted of 30 narratives, written by informants, aged 35 to 65 years that were participating in professional training courses. There has been prepared 30 self-reflections that were analysed using content analysis. The analysis of empirical data shows that external learning motives and barriers prevail in the period when an individual is active in the labour market while the personal motives remain overshadowed. However, personal barriers prevail in the expression of learning barriers. This is influenced by the society’s attitude towards the performance of pupil and student roles and the value attitudes of surrounding people that partially control it

    abstract: The purpose of this project is to investigate the swelling ratio exhibited due to photothermal effects of double network polyacrylamide poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels synthesized with carbon black as a light-sensitive chromophore. Optimal carbon black dispersion was achieved in solutions through sonication, using V9A32 carbon black, where dynamic light scattering recorded particle diameters in the range of 195.0-375.8 nanometers for water/carbon black mixtures, 242.4-262.6 nanometers for monomer/carbon black mixtures without initiator, and 1109.3-1783.9 nanometers for monomer/carbon black mixtures including initiator. The double network polyacrylamide poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels with carbon black yielded weight increases of 0.126% and 6.043%, respectively, after 2 minutes and 10 minutes of being exposed to a light stimulus; compared to previous work which showed a double network polyacrylamide poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel with chlorophyllin yielded weight increases of 18.3% and 20.8%, respectively, after 2 minutes and 10 minutes of being exposed to a light stimulus, the carbon black resulted in a less robust response. Future work for application of the light-responsive hydrogels includes the development of a screen covering that will be made of the hydrogels. This covering is intended for use on LED screen displays, where a light change will result in a protrusion from the screen. The purpose behind this application is that technology users who are visually impaired can still determine what their LED device is trying to communicate with them

    Systems biology and bioinformatics in aging research: a workshop report

    In an "aging society," health span extension is most important. As in 2010, talks in this series of meetings in Rostock-Warnemünde demonstrated that aging is an apparently very complex process, where computational work is most useful for gaining insights and to find interventions that counter aging and prevent or counteract aging-related diseases. The specific topics of this year's meeting entitled, "RoSyBA: Rostock Symposium on Systems Biology and Bioinformatics in Ageing Research," were primarily related to "Cancer and Aging" and also had a focus on work funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The next meeting in the series, scheduled for September 20-21, 2013, will focus on the use of ontologies for computational research into aging, stem cells, and cancer. Promoting knowledge formalization is also at the core of the set of proposed action items concluding this report. © Copyright 2012, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc
