    Why Differentiation Strategy Fails?

    Differentiation strategy has been considered critical for securing a competitive advantage. However, not all firms can create competitive advantages through differentiation. In this paper, we draw on a Taiwanese hotel, restaurant, and TV program provider to show why differentiation strategy fails. On the basis of these three cases, three failed differentiation strategies are proposed and a framework for implementing a differentiation strategy is provided. Finally, we present the discussion and conclusions for the theory and practice of differentiation strategy

    Adolescents who Perceive their Diet as Healthy Consume More Fruits, Vegetables and Milk and Fewer Sweet Drinks

    This study assessed whether adolescents’ perception of the healthfulness of their diet was related to dietary behaviors over the past week, controlling for demographic characteristics. Participants (n=391) completed an online survey on the frequency of specific dietary behaviors over the past week and the perceived healthfulness of their own diet compared to their peers’ diets. Mean intakes of juice, fruit, vegetables, milk, sugar-sweetened beverages, and diet beverages, were compared by perceived healthfulness of diet categories using analysis of covariance. Participants with higher perceived healthfulness of diet reported significantly higher mean fruit and vegetable intakes and a lower mean intake of sugar sweetened beverages over the past week than participants with the same or lower perceived healthfulness of diet (all p< 0.001). Participants who reported a higher perceived healthfulness of diet reported a significantly higher frequency of milk intake (p< 0.05) than those who reported the same perceived healthfulness of diet. Those with lower perceived healthfulness of diet reported higher mean frequencies of diet beverage intakes than those with higher perceived healthfulness (p<0.05). Further research should include qualitative studies with adolescents to explore how individuals rate their diets and how these perceptions influence dietary choices

    Differential Improvements in Student Fruit and Vegetable Selection and Consumption in Response to the New National School Lunch Program Regulations: A Pilot Study

    Objective To investigate changes in student food selection and consumption in response to the new National School Lunch Program meal patterns during fall 2011. Design Eight elementary and four intermediate schools in one Houston area school district were matched on free/reduced-price meal eligibility and randomized into control or intervention conditions. Intervention Both intervention and control school cafeterias served the same menu. The intervention school cafeterias posted the new meal pattern daily; students could select one fruit and two vegetable servings per reimbursable meal. Control school students could only select the previous meal pattern: a total of two fruit and vegetable servings per meal. Main outcome measures Students were observed during lunch: student sex and foods selected/consumed were recorded. Diet analysis software was used to calculate energy/food groups selected/consumed. Statistical analyses performed Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel χ2 tests examined differences in the percent of students selecting each meal component by condition, controlling for sex, grade, and school free/reduced-price meal eligibility. Analysis of covariance assessed differences in amount of energy/food groups selected and consumed, and differences in percent of food groups consumed. Results Observations were conducted for 1,149 elementary and 427 intermediate students. Compared with students in the control schools, significantly more intervention elementary and intermediate school students selected total (P\u3c0.001, P\u3c0.05) and starchy vegetables (P\u3c0.001, P\u3c0.01); more intervention intermediate school students selected fruit (P\u3c0.001), legumes (P\u3c0.05), and protein foods (P\u3c0.01). There were significantly greater amounts of these foods selected and consumed, but no differences in the proportion of the foods consumed by condition. Fewer calories were consumed by elementary and intermediate school intervention students. Conclusions More intervention students selected fruit and vegetables at lunch and consumed them compared with control condition students. Future studies with larger and more diverse student populations are warranted

    Bridge scour evaluation based on ambient vibration

    The vulnerability of bridges to hazards such as earthquakes, wind and floods necessitates special structural characteristics. To guarantee the stability of bridge structures, the precise evaluation of the scour depth of bridge foundation has recently become an important issue, as most of the unexpected damage to or collapse of bridges has been attributed to hydraulic issues. In this paper, a vibration-based bridge health monitoring system that utilizes only the response of superstructure to rapidly evaluate the embedded depth of a bridge column is proposed. To clarify the complex fluid-solid coupling phenomenon, the effects of embedded depth and water level were first verified through a series of static experiments. A confined finite element model simulated by soil spring effects was then established to illustrate the relationship between the fundamental frequency and the embedded depth. Using the proposed algorithm, the health of the bridge is able to be inferred by processing the ambient vibration response of the superstructure. To implement the proposed algorithm, a SHM prototype system monitoring environmental factors such as temperature, water level, and inclination was developed to support on-line processing. The performance of the proposed system was verified by a series of dynamic bridge scour experiments conducted in a laboratory flume and compared with readings from a water-proof camera. The results showed that using the proposed vibration-based bridge health monitoring system, the embedded depth of bridge column during complex scour processes is able to be reliably calculated

    A Data Hiding Method Based on Partition Variable Block Size with Exclusive-or Operation on Binary Image

    In this paper, we propose a high capacity data hiding method applying in binary images. Since a binary image has only two colors, black or white, it is hard to hide data imperceptible. The capacities and imperception are always in a trade-off problem. Before embedding we shuffle the secret data by a pseudo-random number generator to keep more secure. We divide the host image into several non-overlapping (2n+1) by (2n+1) sub-blocks in an M by N host image as many as possible, where n can equal 1, 2, 3 , …, or min(M,N). Then we partition each sub-block into four overlapping (n+1) by (n+1) sub-blocks. We skip the all blacks or all whites in each (2n+1) by (2n+1) sub-blocks. We consider all four (n+1) by (n+1) sub-blocks to check the XOR between the non overlapping parts and center pixel of the (2n+1) by (2n+1) sub-block, it embed n 2 bits in each (n+1) by (n+1) sub-block, totally are 4*n 2 . The entire host image can be embedded 4×n 2×M/(2n+1)×N/(2n+1) bits. The extraction way is simply to test the XOR between center pixel with their non-overlapping part of each sub-block. All embedding bits are collected and shuffled back to the original order. The adaptive means the partitioning sub-block may affect the capacities and imperception that we want to select. The experimental results show that the method provides the large embedding capacity and keeps imperceptible and reveal the host image lossless

    Impact of Pediatric Obesity on Grades in Elementary School

    Objective: The current study examines the relationship between obesity and academic performance among second grade students. We hypothesized that students who were overweight or obese would have poorer grades than students who were normal weight. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Seven elementary schools from a southeast Texas Independent School District. Participants: The sample was composed of 798 ethnically and racially diverse elementary school children. Students were classified as normal weight, overweight, and obese. Main Outcome Measures: Differences in cumulative grades (math, science, and reading) across weight classifications were examined using sex, race/ethnicity, and school socioeconomic level as covariates. Additionally, all subject areas were analyzed independently. Analysis: Linear mixed models and follow-up pairwise comparisons. Results:The linear mixed model revealed significant differences in grades across weight classifications (p\u3c.05). Conclusions and Implications: This study suggests that weight status is an important marker of scholastic success. Addressing overweight may bolster efforts to improve academic performance

    A Hierarchical Context-aware Modeling Approach for Multi-aspect and Multi-granular Pronunciation Assessment

    Automatic Pronunciation Assessment (APA) plays a vital role in Computer-assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) when evaluating a second language (L2) learner's speaking proficiency. However, an apparent downside of most de facto methods is that they parallelize the modeling process throughout different speech granularities without accounting for the hierarchical and local contextual relationships among them. In light of this, a novel hierarchical approach is proposed in this paper for multi-aspect and multi-granular APA. Specifically, we first introduce the notion of sup-phonemes to explore more subtle semantic traits of L2 speakers. Second, a depth-wise separable convolution layer is exploited to better encapsulate the local context cues at the sub-word level. Finally, we use a score-restraint attention pooling mechanism to predict the sentence-level scores and optimize the component models with a multitask learning (MTL) framework. Extensive experiments carried out on a publicly-available benchmark dataset, viz. speechocean762, demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in relation to some cutting-edge baselines.Comment: Accepted to Interspeech 202

    Outcome Evaluation of a Pilot Study Using “Nudges”

    Background: Every school day, over 31 million U.S. children eat school lunches. Unfortunately, students often do not choose the healthy options in the school cafeteria. This paper describes outcome results of a pilot study using “nudges” to improve elementary school students’ fruits and vegetables selections. Methods: A pilot study was conducted from January to May 2012, in six intervention schools and 2 control schools. A behavioral economics-based intervention was conducted using “nudges” or cues from the cafeteria (staff encouragement to select fruit and vegetables, food labels, “Harvest of the Month” posters), school (morning announcement messages, prompts regarding cafeteria food selections), and parents (school newsletter articles, parent listserve messages) to promote students’ selection of fruits and vegetables in the school cafeteria. The serving data from the point-of-service machine provided fruits and vegetables served per student per day. Results:There were no significant differences in the number of servings of fruits and vegetables served per student per day, averaged over the study period. Process data revealed low implementation of the intervention components, which may partially explain results. Conclusions: Low implementation of nudges led to non-significant results in this pilot study. However, providing environmental cues are important and warrant further research with full implementation. Starting 2012, the new meal pattern includes two vegetables and a fruit serving for lunch; and two fruit servings for breakfast. Minimal cost interventions should be explored to facilitate successful implementation of new school meal guidelines
