UNDERSTANDING PREPOSITIONS THROUGH COGNITIVE GRAMMAR. A CASE OF IN
Poly - semantic nature of prepositions has been discussed in linguistic literature and confirmed by language data. In the majority of research within cognitive linguistics prepositions have been approached as predicates organising entities in space, with less attention paid to the search for a meaning schema sanctioning the numerous uses. Cognitive Grammar analytic tools allow for the analysis which results in discovering one meaning schema sanctioning the uses of the English preposition in. The present analysis is based on the assumption that the meaning schema of in profiles a relation of conceptual enclosure between two symbolic structures, one of which conceptually fits in the other. Accordingly, I argue that the speaker employs in to structure a real scene not because one element of the scene can physically enclose the other one, but due to conceptual ‘fitting in’ holding between the predication ‘preceding’ the preposition and the one that ‘follows’. In formal terms, the usage of in is conditioned and sanctioned by compatibility of active zones in the predications used to form the complex language expression involved. Peculiarities of physical organization may be ignored in such conceptualisation, though the speaker can choose to encode all peculiarities of physical organisation of real world objects employing different linguistic devices
Rzeczywistość – słowo – rzeczywistość
W języku etnicznym jest tylko to, czego doświadcza społeczność żyjąca w konkretnym kontekście społeczno-kulturowym, w którym ten język powstał i funkcjonuje. Stwierdzenie powyższe, nawiązujące do koncepcji Sapira [1921], streszcza sposób myślenia o istocie języka naturalnego, charakterystyczny dla językoznawców kognitywnych ‘zachodniego wybrzeża’, w szczególności Lakoffa [1987], Langackera [2011], Turnera [2014].
Ethnic Cultures and Their Languages in United Europe through the Story of Dyirbal: A Cognitive Linguist’s Perspective
In view of the growing interest in the nature of culture – language interface, on the one hand, and the socio-political developments inherent in European integration processes, on the other, three issues are perhaps worth addressing for linguists and cultural studies specialists: (i) whether the evolutionary processes of cultural integration can influence the structures of ethnic/national languages; (ii) the extent to which changes in language structure may result in a loss of certain elements characteristic of the culture related to the language; (iii) what that long-term (socio-political) consequences may be as an effect of the remarkable weakening and subsequent disappearance of the elements of ethnic cultures that function as determinants of ethnic/national identity. Considering the size of this article, none of the aforementioned issues will be solved. Nevertheless, some aspects of language–culture interface are identified, while the problem of ecological interdependence between language and culture is illustrated in the case of the death of Dyirbal. Changes in Dyirbal and examples of language expressions from English and Polish illustrating the cultural imprints in language structure are discussed from the perspective of cognitive methodologies
Gramatyka przestrzenna - preliminaria
Artykuł otwiera krótkie streszczenie badań z zakresu psychologii przeprowadzonych
przez Eleonor Rosch, w wyniku których określone zostały pojęcia: kategorii
naturalnej, prototypu, poziomu podstawowego, etc. Zdefiniowanie tych
pojąć stworzyło podstawy dla szeregu koncepcji językoznawczych, wśród nich teorii
IDEALNEGO MODELU KOGNITYWNEGO (ang. ICM) Georga Lakoffa i GRAMATYKI PRZESTRZENNEJ
(space grammar) Ronalda Langackera.
Gramatyka przestrzenna odrzuca koncepcją autonomiczności składni, semantyki
i fonologii, przyjmując, że znaczenie jest właściwością wszystkich aspektów jązyka.
W założeniach tej teorii odchodzi sią również od pojęcia struktur głębokiej
i powierzchniowej, co prowadzi do odrzucenia podstaw gramatyki transformacyjno-
generatywnej. Zgodnie z powyższymi założeniami Langacker uważa, że struktura
semantyczna jest cechą specyficzną dla danego języka.
Pojęcie podstawowe aparatu opisowego tego modelu to jednostka symboliczna (symbolic unit), której wartość wynika z połączenia bieguna semantycznego i bieguna fonologicznegо (semantic pole i phonological pole).
profil-podstawa. "Podstawa" to część wiedzy ogólnej (cognitive
domain), która jest istotna dla charakterystyki danego pojęcia. "Profil" to dokładne miejsce (location) lub konfiguracja (configuration) w podstawie (base), którą dana jednostka wywołuje - czyni najbardziej wyrazistą.
Langacker posługuje się dwoma kategoriami: rzeczу (thing) i relacji (relation). W kategorii relacji mieszczą się przymiotniki, przysłówki,
przyimki i czasowniki, które różnią się od pozostałych relacji tym, że przypisana
jest im w artość czasu (temporal profile). Koncepcja relacji
wprowadza pojęcia trajektora (trajector) i punktów odniesienia (landmarks).

Hunting for a missing link: between cognitive framework and classroom practices
The problem discussed in this article is the result of a conference on research on the importance of cognitive linguistics for teaching / learning foreign languages. Despite the high methodological standards, the introduction of cognitive grammar in the classroom showed a "missing link" between concepts and reality. In the article, the author describes exercises that should help students discover the correlation between language and somatic experience. The workshop consists of two stages: (i) introduction to the concept of image patterns as conceptual structures of our organization of cognitive function; (II) sample analysis of patterns of image organizing the semantic structure of the chosen language expressions
Dokonane czasowniki dynamiczne a Perfect
W artykule niniejszym podjęta jest próba określenia wspólnych cech aspektu
dokonanego (Perfective) czasowników dynamicznych (Dynamic Verbs) języka
polskiego i perfektu (Perfect) występującego w angielskich odpowiednikach
tych czasowników.
Analiza zdań polskich z formami dokonanymi i niedokonanymi tych czasowników
Zadanie pt. Intellectual Empathy as a Socio-Cultural Facet of Communication: The Case of English Modals from the Perspective of Polish
The paper addresses the issue of compatibility between the speaker’s intention and the hearer’s expectations in a communicative act as an issue related to what I would like to call “intellectual empathy.” The immediate inspiration for the topic is the following quotation from Susan M. Ervin-Tripp (1964: 93): “The possibility of insult and of humor based on linguistic choices means that members agree on the underlying rules of speech and on the social meaning of linguistic features.” Langacker’s Cognitive Grammar allows us to accommodate the extra-linguistic facets of meaning construction, thus to identify the role of the speaker/hearer’s cooperation in the construction and reconstruction of meaning in a particular usage context, the role that is dependent on the degree of intellectual empathy between the speech act participants. English modals have been selected as an aspect of the language illustrating the relevance of linguistic choices resulting from socio-cultural determinants behind intellectual empathy
A Word on Conceptual Metaphor Theory in Current Academic Discourse: Inspired by Ariadna Strugielska’s (2012) Paper: “Alternate Source and Target Domains in Conceptual Metaphor”
Inspired by Strugielska’s (2012) article “Alternate Construals of Source and Target Domains in Conceptual Metaphor,” where the linguist presents a number of arguments questioning applicability of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) to the analysis of linguistic meaning, I attempt to reanalyze some of the arguments through reference to primary sources: Lakoff and Johnson (1980), Lakoff (1990), Kövecses (2000, 2002, 2005, 2011). The issues of direct concern are: dichotomous nature of conceptual domains and their assumed discretness, the issue of differentiating the conceptual structure form the semantic structure and cognitive metaphorical projections from the relation of categorization, the question of monosemy constraint and degree of informativeness of metaphorical projections. The issues are discussed in the source article in the context of works whose authors question validity of CMT on the basis of (naturally occurring) language data from corpora. My own reanalysis of the examples discussed exhibit the extent to which metaphorical projections between the source and the target domains can provide motivations for the language expressions, accounting for their metaphoricity. At the same time, employing analytic tools available within Cognitive Grammar, I demonstrate that the extent of the contribution of metaphorical projections to respective semantic structures is determined by the position of the source domain in the matrix of the respective profile/base alignment
