    Optic nerve sheath meningioma: a case report

    A case of a 75-year old male with right-sided exopthalmos is presented. Outside proptosis of the right eye was initially observed 6 years ago. Opthalmological and endocrinological clinical examination as well as laboratory tests revealed no pathology from optic nerve disc, optic bulb and thyroid related hormones. MRI study demonstrated an optic nerve meningioma. The key imaging findings and the differential diagnosis were discussed in this present paper

    Physical-Mechanical Properties of Superhard Nanocomposite Coatings on Base Zr-Ti-Si-N

    Hard and super hard coatings of Zr-Ti-Si-N of from 2.8 μm to 3.5 μm thickness were fabricated using a vacuum arc source with high frequency stimulation. The samples were annealed in vacuum and in air at 1200 °C. It was found that films with a high Zr and Ti content were thermally stable up to 1180 °C. At the same time, a thin oxide layer of 180 nm to 240 nm was found on the surfaces, which protected the sample from destruction. Below 1000 °C annealing temperature in vacuum, changing of phase composition is determined by appearing of siliconitride crystallites (ß-Si3N4) with hexagonal crystalline lattice and by formation of ZrO2 oxide crystallites. Size of grains of a substitution solid solution (Zr, Ti)N varied from (10 – 12) nm to 25 nm, but Ti concentration in the solid solution increased. In the process of annealing, hardness of the best series of samples increased from (39.6 ±1.4) GPa to 53.6 GPa, which seemed to indicate that a spinodal segregation along grain interfaces was finished.     Ascospore discharge, germination and culture of fungal partners of tropical lichens, including the use of a novel culture technique

    A total of 292 lichen samples, representing over 200 species and at least 65 genera and 26 families, were collected, mainly in Thailand; 170 of the specimens discharged ascospores in the laboratory. Generally, crustose lichens exhibited the highest discharge rates and percentage germination. In contrast, foliose lichen samples, although having a high discharge rate, had a lower percentage germination than crustose species tested. A correlation with season was indicated for a number of species. Continued development of germinated ascospores into recognizable colonies in pure culture was followed for a selection of species. The most successful medium tried was 2 % Malt-Yeast extract agar (MYA), and under static conditions using a liquid culture medium, a sponge proved to be the best of several physical carriers tested; this novel method has considerable potential for experimental work with lichen mycobionts
