    Study of sponge gourd ascorbate peroxidase and winter squash superoxide dismutase under respective flooding and chilling stresses

    AbstractThe objectives of this work were to study the responses of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR), and physiological parameters of bitter melon (BM), sponge gourd (SG), and winter squash (WS) under waterlogged and low temperature conditions. The BM and SG plants were subjected to 0–72h flooding treatments. Moreover, BM and WS plants were exposed to chilling at 12/7°C (day/night) for 0–72h. The results show that different genotypes responded differently to environmental stress according to their various antioxidant enzymes and physiological parameters. The activity of APX in roots and leaves of SG plants significantly higher than that of BM plants during continuous flooding. Significant increases in SOD activity in leaves of WS plants were also observed throughout the entire chilling duration compared to BM plants. On the basis of our observations, we conclude that increased APX and SOD activities provide SG and WS plants with increased waterlogging and chilling stress tolerance, respectively. Both APX and SOD activities can be used for selecting BM lines with the best tolerances to water logging and chilling stresses

    A Collaborative Model for Calculus Reform-A Preliminary Report

    Abstract For the past two decades, both pros and cons of calculus reform have been discussed. A question often asked is, "Has the calculus reform project improved students' understanding of mathematics?" The advocates of the reform movement claim that reform-based calculus may help students gain an intuitive understanding of mathematical propositions and have a better grasp of the real-world applications. Nonetheless, many still question its effect and argue that calculus reform purges calculus of its mathematical rigor and poorly prepares students for advanced mathematical training. East Asian students often rank in the top 10 of TIMSS and PISA. However, out-performing others in an international comparison may not guarantee their success in the learning of calculus. Taiwanese college students usually have a high failure rate in calculus. The National Science Council of Taiwan therefore initiated several projects in 2008 for improving students' learning in calculus. This paper provides a preliminary report on one of the projects, PLEASE, and discusses how it was planned to respond to the tenets of calculus reform movement

    Insights on Distinct Left Atrial Remodeling Between Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

    Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) commonly coexist with overlapping pathophysiology like left atrial (LA) remodeling, which might differ given different underlying mechanisms. Objectives: We sought to investigate the different patterns of LA wall remodeling in AF vs. HFpEF. Methods: We compared LA wall characteristics including wall volume (LAWV), wall thickness (LAWT), and wall thickness heterogeneity (LAWT[SD]) and LA structure, function among the controls (without AF or HFpEF, n = 115), HFpEF alone (n = 59), AF alone (n = 37), and HFpEF+AF (n = 38) groups using multi-detector computed tomography and echocardiography. Results: LA wall remodeling was most predominant and peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) was worst in HFpEF+AF patients as compared to the rest. Despite lower E/e' (9.8 ± 3.8 vs. 13.4 ± 6.4) yet comparable LA volume, LAWT and PALS in AF alone vs. HFpEF alone, LAWV [12.6 (11.6–15.3) vs. 12.0 (10.2–13.7); p = 0.01] and LAWT(SD) [0.68 (0.61–0.71) vs. 0.60 (0.56–0.65); p &lt; 0.001] were significantly greater in AF alone vs. HFpEF alone even after multi-variate adjustment and propensity matching. After excluding the HFpEF+AF group, both LAWV and LAWT [SD] provided incremental values when added to PALS or LAVi (all p for net reclassification improvement &lt;0.05) in discriminating AF alone, with LAWT[SD] yielding the largest C-statistic (0.78, 95% CI: 0.70–0.86) among all LA wall indices. Conclusions: Despite a similar extent of LA enlargement and dysfunction in HFpEF vs. AF alone, larger LAWV and LAWT [SD] can distinguish AF from HFpEF alone, suggesting the distinct underlying pathophysiological mechanism of LA remodeling in AF vs. HFpEF.</p

    Real-time Monitoring for the Next Core-Collapse Supernova in JUNO

    Core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the Universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the SN burst is a unique opportunity to realize the multi-messenger observation of the CCSN events. In this work, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to the pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), which is a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed with both the prompt monitors on the electronic board and online monitors at the data acquisition stage, in order to ensure both the alert speed and alert coverage of progenitor stars. By assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system can be sensitive to the pre-SN neutrinos up to the distance of about 1.6 (0.9) kpc and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kpc for a progenitor mass of 30MM_{\odot} for the case of normal (inverted) mass ordering. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by using the accumulated event anisotropy of the inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos, which, along with the early alert, can play important roles for the followup multi-messenger observations of the next Galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

    Effects of Ozonated Water Treatment and Modified Atmosphere Package on the Decay and Color of Wax Apple Fruit (Syzygium samarangense [Blume] Merrill & L. M. Perry) during Storage

    Wax apple is very perishable fruit at room temperature. The aim of this study is to extend its storage limit by using modified atmosphere package (MAP) and ozonated water which is a highly destructive agent for microbial. Wax apples were immersed in ozonated water (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 ppm) for 4, 8 and 12 minutes, then placed in cardboard boxes, stored at 12°C and evaluated the effect of ozonated water on the fruit quality. Ozonated–water–treated wax apples were packed into low–density polyester (0.03 and 0.1 mm thick) or high–density polyester (0.01 mm thick) bags and stored at 12°C for the MAP storage test. Quality characteristics including color, decay and chilling injury symptom were checked every week during storage. Results showed that treatment with 0.2 ppm of ozonated water for 4 minutes is good for the low temperature storage of wax apple. The low–density polyester bag (0.1 mm thick) has an advantage over others for the storage of wax apple at 12°C. The combination of ozonated water pretreatment and MAP with 6% O_2, 10% CO_2 and 84% N_2 appeared to be the most prospective for the storage of wax apple at 12°C

    Lipid Content and Fatty Acid Composition in Taiwan Avocados (Persea americana Mill)

    Lipids are the major component in the flesh of avocado fruit. The main objective of this work is to determine the lipid content and composition in Taiwan avocados. The changes of lipid content and fatty acid composition were also investigated in terms of harvest maturity and ripening of avocados. Total lipid content in avocado fruits of seven cultivars, \u27Hall\u27, \u27Zhang An\u27, \u27Ching Jin No.1\u27, \u27Ching Jin No.2\u27, \u27October Red\u27, \u27CASE3\u27 and \u27Choquette\u27, ranged from 2.59% to 11.81% in fresh weight. Eight fatty acids were found in the avocado fruits. Concerning the saturated fatty acids, the most abundant in the avocado cultivars investigated were palmitic (C16:0) and oleic acid (C18:1). Palmitic acid levels were found to be the highest of the saturated fatty acid in all samples with the range from 38.37% to 48.32% of the total lipid. Oleic acid content in all avocado cultivars was considerably higher than those of other unsaturated fatty acids. Early– and late–harvested fruits showed higher total lipid content than others. Palmitic acid and oleic acid levels increased and then decreased during harvest time. Fatty acids composition of avocado fruits changed during their ripening
