By heating up the diesel fuel up to a certain temperature before it goes through the high pressure injection pump will lower its density and viscosity. Therefore, when injected in the combustion chamber, it will formed smaller droplets of fuel spray which result in a more homogenious air-fuel mixture. Also by using higher temperature will make the diesel fuel easier to ignite in order to compensate the limited time which is available in high speed operating conditions.

One of the factor that influences optimation of performance of diesel engine is an imperfect combustion in the combustion chamber. To optimize performance of this engine it is necessary to do modification by increasing air temperature and air pressure into combustion chamber.
A change of inlet air temperature in the combustion chamber will effect the air density, so will influence the amount of air in the combustion chamber. The increasing air pressure into the combustion chamber will help the mixture to reach its combustion condition faster. So that combustion deceleration, specially in the high rotation speed condition can be avoided.
The result of the research showed that the optimal condition can be achieved at the temperature 50°C and the pressure 3 bars

A diesel engine that is used widely in a rice mill needs to be cooled by water that is circulated. One way to reduce the fuel used is to find the optimum cooling water entering the engine.
A research is done in a rice mill in Lumajang. It is found that the optimum temperature to get the rice milled both for IR64 and IR70 is 65oC. The fuel is reduced as much as 13.6% for IR64 if the water enters the engine at 65oC compared to 40oC. Meanwhile, it is 14.3% for IR70.
The temperature of the cooling water entering the engine is maintained at the optimum temperature by controlling the volume (or the height) of the water in the cooling pond, i.e. 220 liters for IR64 and 230.6 liters for IR70
