    A method of isolating treadmill shock and vibration on spacecraft

    A major problem is currently felt to exist in the implementation of materials processing on a spacecraft. Crystal growers place requirements of one micro-g or less on the vehicle. Simple math produces startling figures for such a restriction e.g., for each ton of vehicle mass with 10(-6) g acceleration limit; Perturbing Force limit, F = .002 lb. For each 10(5) lbs F = 0.1 lb. For each 10(6) lbs F = 1.0 lb. Forces generated by normal human movement on spacecraft of 5x10(5) pounds weight are on an order-of-magnitude greater than allowed by this specification and forces generated by locomotion on a treadmill are more than two orders-of-magnitude greater. Other exercises and normal onboard functions generate forces in between. To accommodate many essential functions it is obvious that even on a vehicle as large as Space Station, a reduction of more than two orders of magnitude in force is required. Commonly used passive shock and vibration isolation devices are complex, heavy, and also would have difficulty meeting the requirements. However, by a new arrangement, adequate isolation can be obtained. Isolation of the treadmill will be treated since it is considered the most significant disturbance at this time

    Valve for waste collection and storage

    A method and valve apparatus for collection of fecal matter designed to operate efficiently in a zero gravity environment is presented. The system comprises a waste collection area within a body having a seat opening. Low pressure within the waste collection area directs fecal matter away from the user's buttocks and prevents the escape of undersirable gases. The user actuates a piston covered with an absorbent pad that sweeps through the waste collection area to collect the fecal matter, scrub the waste collection area, press the waste against an end of the waste collection area and retracts, leaving the used pad. Multiple pads are provided on the piston to accommodate multiple uses of the system. Also a valve allows air to be drawn through the body, so the valve will not be plugged with fecal matter. A sheet feeder feeds fresh sheets of absorbent pads to a face of the piston with each actuation

    Roles and Ethics of the Practicing Criminologist

    Academic criminologists, most trained as social and behavioral scientists, have not, for the most part, considered themselves as viable experts with skills and expertise which can be sold in the market place. Concomitantly, those professions and organizations which rely on professional experts and consultants have generally not considered academic criminologists as suited for their purpose. Part of this problem is derived from the very nature or orientation of graduate education. Doctorate programs concentrate on those skills that criminologists will need for university positions. We argue that the roles of criminologists in applied settings are essentially the same as for criminologists in academic settings. What differentiates applied criminologists from academic criminologists are not roles but the settings or contexts where they work. In this paper, we explore the application of criminological theories, methodologies, data analytic techniques and literature reviews in the applied setting. We outline so me of the typical activities and roles of criminologists in legal settings and show the applications of criminology in the practice of law and in court. We use examples from our consulting practice to show how these roles and accompanying skills are applied in the legal setting. We also consider some of the ethical questions associated with various roles and situation

    Visual suppression of the vestibulo-ocular reflex during space flight

    Visual suppression of the vestibulo-ocular reflex was studied in 16 subjects on 4 Space Shuttle missions. Eye movements were recorded by electro-oculography while subjects fixated a head mounted target during active sinusoidal head oscillation at 0.3 Hz. Adequacy of suppression was evaluated by the number of nystagmus beats, the mean amplitude of each beat, and the cumulative amplitude of nystagmus during two head oscillation cycles. Vestibulo-ocular reflex suppression was unaffected by space flight. Subjects with space motion sickness during flight had significantly more nystagmus beats than unaffected individuals. These susceptible subjects also tended to have more nystagmus beats before flight

    Eye and head motion during head turns in spaceflight

    Eye-head motion was studied pre-, in- and postflight during single voluntary head turns. A transient increase in vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain occurred early in the flight, but later trended toward normal. This increased gain was produced by a relative increase in eye counterrotation velocity. Asymmetries in gain with right and left turns also occurred, caused by asymmetries in eye counterrotation velocities. These findings were remarkably similar to those from Soviet primate studies using gaze fixation targets, except the human study trended more rapidly toward normal. These findings differ substantially from those measuring VOR gain by head oscillation, in which no significant changes were found inflight. No visual disturbances were noted in either test condition or in normal activities. These head turn studies are the only ones to date documenting any functional change in VOR in weightlessness

    Studies of the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex on STS 7 and 8

    Unpaced voluntary horizontal head oscillation was used to study the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) on Shuttle flights STS 7 and 8. Ten subjects performed head oscillations at 0.33 Hz + or - 30 deg amplitude under the followng conditions: VVOR (visual VOR), eyes open and fixed on a stationary target; VOR-EC, with eyes closed and fixed on the same target in imagination; and VOR-S (VOR suppression), with eyes open and fixed on a head-synchronized target. Effects of weightlessness, flight phase, and Space Motion Sickness (SMS) on head oscillation characteristics were examined. A significant increase in head oscillation frequency was noted inflight in subjects free from SMS. In subjects susceptible to SMS, frequency was reduced during their Symptomatic period. The data also suggest that the amplitude and peak velocity of head oscillation were reduced early inflight. No significant changes were noted in reflex gain or phase in any of the test conditions; however, there was a suggestion of an increase in VVOR and VOR-ES gain early inflight in asymptomatic subjects. A significant difference in VOR-S was found between SMS susceptible and non-susceptible subjects. There is no evidence that any changes in VOR characteristics contributed to SMS
