Exchange and spin Jahn-Teller distortions for a triangular cluster of spin-1/2
We study the effects of magnetoelastic coupling on the degenerate ground
state of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model for the regular
triangular spin cluster. Static displacement of spins spontaneously lifts the
degeneracy of the ground state through the distance dependence of exchange
coupling, i.e., a spin Jahn-Teller mechanism takes place. On the other hand,
dynamical displacement does not lift the degeneracy, though the cluster
distorts spontaneously. The energy decrease obtained by dynamical theory is
twice as large as that obtained by static theory because of quantum

Magnetic structure of intermetallic compounds of rare earth and 3d transition metal with the C15 structure is studied on the basis of the classical Heisenberg model. By making use of the Lyons-Kaplan method, magnetic phase diagram is calculated with respect to the states with the modulation wave vector Q equivalent to [0,0,0] to obtain seven types of spin structure, and their stability is compared with screw structures of Q parallel with [0,0,1], [1,1,0] and [1,1,1]. A Case of Generalized Acanthosis Nigricans with Positive Lupus Erythematosus-Related Autoantibodies and Antimicrosomal Antibody: Autoimmune Acanthosis Nigricans?
Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is a hyperpigmented keratotic skin lesion known to be associated with malignant disease and endocrinopathy. We report a very rare case of generalized AN with Sjögren's syndrome- and systemic lupus erythematosus-like features but without type B insulin resistance. Neither internal malignancy nor other endocrinological disorders, including glucose intolerance, were detected during a 10-year clinical course with benign diffuse papillomatosis extending from the mucosa of the larynx to the esophagogastric junction. The case was complicated with chronic thyroiditis and interstitial pneumonia, which were not treated with any medication. AN skin lesions and mucosal papillomatosis regressed with oral cyclosporine A, accompanied by the lowering of autoantibody titers. This is the first report of generalized AN involving an area from the mucosa of the larynx to the esophagogastric junction accompanied by autoimmune manifestations which responded to systemic immunosuppressive therapy
Suppressed supersymmetry breaking terms in the Higgs sector
We study the little hierarchy between mass parameters in the Higgs sector and
other SUSY breaking masses. This type of spectrum can relieve the fine-tuning
problem in the MSSM Higgs sector. Our scenario can be realized by
superconformal dynamics. The spectrum in our scenario has significant
implications in other phenomenological aspects like the relic abundance of the
lightest neutralino and relaxation of the unbounded-from-below constraints.Comment: 14 pages, late
Hepatocyte growth factor modulates motility and invasiveness of ovarian carcinomas via Ras-mediated pathway
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a multifunctional growth factor which has pleiotrophic biological effects on epithelial cells such as proliferation, motogenesis, invasiveness and morphogenesis. Peritoneal dissemination is critical for the progression of ovarian cancer, and our study revealed that HGF induces migration and invasion of ovarian cancer cells. We also demonstrated that HGF stimulates autophosphorylation of its receptor, followed by activation of the Ras-MAP (mitogen-activated peptide) kinase cascade. Moreover, infection of ovarian cancer cells with Ras dominant-negative adenovirus reduced the HGF-induced motogenic and invasive activities. Additionally, both MEK and PI3-kinase pathways downstream of Ras were involved in HGF-stimulated ovarian cancer cell invasiveness. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Effects of rTMS of pre-supplementary motor area on fronto basal ganglia network activity during stop-signal task
Stop-signal task (SST) has been a key paradigm for probing human brain mechanisms underlying response inhibition, and the inhibition observed in SST is now considered to largely depend on a fronto basal ganglia network consisting mainly of right inferior frontal cortex, pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA), and basal ganglia, including subthalamic nucleus, striatum (STR), and globus pallidus pars interna (GPi). However, causal relationships between these frontal regions and basal ganglia are not fully understood in humans. Here, we partly examined these causal links by measuring human fMRI activity during SST before and after excitatory/inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of pre-SMA. We first confirmed that the behavioral performance of SST was improved by excitatory rTMS and impaired by inhibitory rTMS. Afterward, we found that these behavioral changes were well predicted by rTMS-induced modulation of brain activity in pre-SMA, STR, and GPi during SST. Moreover, by examining the effects of the rTMS on resting-state functional connectivity between these three regions, we showed that the magnetic stimulation of pre-SMA significantly affected intrinsic connectivity between pre-SMA and STR, and between STR and GPi. Furthermore, the magnitudes of changes in resting-state connectivity were also correlated with the behavioral changes seen in SST. These results suggest a causal relationship between pre-SMA and GPi via STR during response inhibition, and add direct evidence that the fronto basal ganglia network for response inhibition consists of multiple top-down regulation pathways in humans
Yukawa Hierarchy Transfer Based on Superconformal Dynamics and Geometrical Realization in String Models
We propose a scenario that leads to hierarchical Yukawa couplings and
degenerate sfermion masses at the same time, in the context of
extra-dimensional models, which can be naturally embedded in a wide class of
string models. The hierarchy of Yukawa couplings and degeneracy of sfermion
masses can be realized thanks to superconformal gauge dynamics. The sfermion
mass degeneracy is guaranteed by taking the superconformal fixed point to be
family independent. In our scenario, the origin of Yukawa hierarchy is
attributed to geometry of compactified dimensions and the consequent volume
dependence of gauge couplings in the superconformal sectors. The difference in
these gauge couplings is dynamically transferred to the hierarchy of the Yukawa
couplings. Thus, our scenario combines a new dynamical approach and the
conventional geometrical approach to the supersymmetric flavor problem.Comment: 12 pages, latex, no figur
