The Impact Of Merit Pay On Teaching And Research Outcomes Of Accounting Programs

    Get PDF
Basing the compensation of accounting professors on merit pay in order to encourage better teaching, research and service is controversial. This study uses data from a survey of the 852 accounting programs in the United States to empirically examine the influence of merit-based salary plans. Findings indicate a strong positive association between the presence of a merit plan at a school and the quality of the school’s research outcomes. However, no association was found between the presence of a merit program at a school and the school’s teaching outcomes

Measurement of Scattering Rate and Minimum Conductivity in Graphene

The conductivity of graphene samples with various levels of disorder is investigated for a set of specimens with mobility in the range of 1−20×1031-20\times10^3 cm2^2/V sec. Comparing the experimental data with the theoretical transport calculations based on charged impurity scattering, we estimate that the impurity concentration in the samples varies from 2−15×10112-15\times 10^{11} cm−2^{-2}. In the low carrier density limit, the conductivity exhibits values in the range of 2−12e2/h2-12e^2/h, which can be related to the residual density induced by the inhomogeneous charge distribution in the samples. The shape of the conductivity curves indicates that high mobility samples contain some short range disorder whereas low mobility samples are dominated by long range scatterers.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure

Evolution of InAs branches in InAs/GaAs nanowire heterostructures

Branched nanowireheterostructures of InAs∕GaAs were observed during Au-assisted growth of InAs on GaAsnanowires. The evolution of these branches has been determined through detailed electron microscopy characterization with the following sequence: (1) in the initial stage of InAsgrowth, the Au droplet is observed to slide down the side of the GaAsnanowire, (2) the downward movement of Aunanoparticle later terminates when the nanoparticle encounters InAsgrowing radially on the GaAsnanowire sidewalls, and (3) with further supply of In and As vapor reactants, the Aunanoparticles assist the formation of InAs branches with a well-defined orientation relationship with GaAs∕InAs core/shell stems. We anticipate that these observations advance the understanding of the kink formation in axial nanowireheterostructures. The Australian Research Council is acknowledged for the financial support of this project. An Accounting Program Merit Pay Survey

Basing the compensation of accounting professors on merit pay in order to encourage better teaching, research and service is controversial. Before the effectiveness of merit-based salary plans can be examined empirically, it must be determined which accounting programs use such a system. In this study, the 852 accounting programs in the United States were surveyed to identify the methods in use to adjust the salaries of individual professors. Initial findings indicate that schools using a merit system usually do not also offer time in grade increases and that doctoral granting schools and AACSB accredited schools are more likely to use a merit system. &nbsp

The Impact Of Merit Pay On Research Outcomes For Accounting Professors

Merit pay for professors to encourage better teaching, research and service is controversial. Its effectiveness can be examined empirically. In this study, the existence of a merit plan and ACT scores of incoming freshmen were strongly associated with measurable research outcomes. Additional study is needed to test the association with the other dimensions of faculty performance

Evidence for nodeless superconducting gap in NaFe1−x_{1-x}Cox_xAs from low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements

The thermal conductivity of optimally doped NaFe0.972_{0.972}Co0.028_{0.028}As (Tc∼T_c \sim 20 K) and overdoped NaFe0.925_{0.925}Co0.075_{0.075}As (Tc∼T_c \sim 11 K) single crystals were measured down to 50 mK. No residual linear term κ0/T\kappa_0/T is found in zero magnetic field for both compounds, which is an evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. Applying field up to HH = 9 T (≈Hc2/4\approx H_{c2}/4) does not noticeably increase κ0/T\kappa_0/T in NaFe1.972_{1.972}Co0.028_{0.028}As, which is consistent with multiple isotropic gaps with similar magnitudes. The κ0/T\kappa_0/T of overdoped NaFe1.925_{1.925}Co0.075_{0.075}As shows a relatively faster field dependence, indicating the increase of the ratio between the magnitudes of different gaps, or the enhancement of gap anisotropy upon increasing doping.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Benchmark performance of low-cost Sb2Se3 photocathodes for unassisted solar overall water splitting

Determining cost-effective semiconductors exhibiting desirable properties for commercial photoelectrochemical water splitting remains a challenge. Herein, we report a Sb2Se3 semiconductor that satisfies most requirements for an ideal high-performance photoelectrode, including a small band gap and favourable cost, optoelectronic properties, processability, and photocorrosion stability. Strong anisotropy, a major issue for Sb2Se3, is resolved by suppressing growth kinetics via close space sublimation to obtain high-quality compact thin films with favourable crystallographic orientation. The Sb2Se3 photocathode exhibits a high photocurrent density of almost 30mAcm(-2) at 0V against the reversible hydrogen electrode, the highest value so far. We demonstrate unassisted solar overall water splitting by combining the optimised Sb2Se3 photocathode with a BiVO4 photoanode, achieving a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 1.5% with stability over 10h under simulated 1 sun conditions employing a broad range of solar fluxes. Low-cost Sb2Se3 can thus be an attractive breakthrough material for commercial solar fuel production. While photoelectrochemical water splitting offers an integrated means to convert sunlight to a renewable fuel, cost-effective light-absorbers are rare. Here, authors report Sb2Se3 photocathodes for high-performance photoelectrochemical water splitting devices

Decreased health-related quality of life in disease-free survivors of differentiated thyroid cancer in Korea

Abstract

Background

Concern regarding the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of long-term survivors of thyroid cancer has risen due to the rapid increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer, which generally has an excellent prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of HRQOL in disease-free survivors of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) and to evaluate the important determinants of HRQOL.

Methods

This was a cross-sectional study in which we interviewed consecutive disease-free survivors of DTC. Three different validated questionnaires ("EORTC QLQ-C30" for various functional domains, the "brief fatigue inventory (BFI)" and the "hospital anxiety and depression scale" (HADS)) were used. Data from a large, population based survey of 1,000 people were used as a control.

Results

The response rate for the questionnaires was 78.9% (316/401). Disease-free survivors of DTC showed a decreased HRQOL in all five functional domains (physical, role, cognitive, emotional, and social) on the EORTC QLQ-C30 compared with controls (<it>P </it>< 0.01). BFI and HADS-anxiety scores also showed greater distress in disease-free survivors of DTC than in controls (<it>P </it>< 0.05). A multiple regression analysis for the determinants of HRQOL showed that the HADS-anxiety, HADS-depression, and BFI scores were the most significant components of decreased HRQOL.

Conclusions

Although disease-free survivors of DTC are expected to have disease-specific survival comparable to the general population, they experience a significantly decreased HRQOL. Anxiety, depression, and fatigue were the major determinants of the decreased HRQOL. Supportive psychological care should be integrated into the management of long-term survivors of DTC.</p
