The Immune System: the ultimate fractionated cyber-physical system
In this little vision paper we analyze the human immune system from a
computer science point of view with the aim of understanding the architecture
and features that allow robust, effective behavior to emerge from local sensing
and actions. We then recall the notion of fractionated cyber-physical systems,
and compare and contrast this to the immune system. We conclude with some

Female Traditional Principals and Co-Principals: Experiences of Role Conflict and Job Satisfaction
This paper presents a secondary analysis of survey data focusing on role conflict and job satisfaction of 102 female principals. Data were collected from 51 female traditional principals and 51 female co-principals. By examining the traditional and co-principal leadership models as experienced by female principals, this paper addresses the impact of the type of leadership model (traditional principalship or co-principalship) has on women principals with regard to role conflict and job satisfaction. The co-principals experienced lower levels of role conflict and higher levels of job satisfaction than did the female traditional principals

A Compositional Framework for Preference-Aware Agents
A formal description of a Cyber-Physical system should include a rigorous
specification of the computational and physical components involved, as well as
their interaction. Such a description, thus, lends itself to a compositional
model where every module in the model specifies the behavior of a
(computational or physical) component or the interaction between different
components. We propose a framework based on Soft Constraint Automata that
facilitates the component-wise description of such systems and includes the
tools necessary to compose subsystems in a meaningful way, to yield a
description of the entire system. Most importantly, Soft Constraint Automata
allow the description and composition of components' preferences as well as
environmental constraints in a uniform fashion. We illustrate the utility of
our framework using a detailed description of a patrolling robot, while
highlighting methods of composition as well as possible techniques to employ

Description of the Mast Flight System
The Mast Flight System is composed of several subsystems. Primary among these is the Deployable Mast Subsystem (DMS) which consists of a beam assembly and an associated mechanism for deploying and retracting the beam. The beam assembly is a joint dominated graphite epoxy and titanium truss as is expected of future large space structures. Integral to the beam assembly are actuators, sensors and associated electronics which are available for excitation and damping as desired by the experimenter. The beam structural characteristics can also be modified as desired by the experimenter using the Parameter Modification Device installed at the end of the beam. Data measured on the beam by the sensors and commands to the actuators are transmitted along the beam digitally at 150 Hz using a standard 1553 type bus. The Modular Distributed Information Sybsystem (MDIS) computer functions as bus master and ensures that all experimental data is saved for future analysis. The MDIS computer also performs a safing function to prevent inadvertent overexcitation of the beam. Finally, the Excitation and Damping Subsystem (EDS) computer is available to the experimenter for implementation of control algorithms or any other numerical operations as desired. Measuring Perceived Effects of Drinking an Extract of Basidiomycetes Agaricus Blazei Murill: A Survey of Japanese Consumers with Cancer
BACKGROUND. To survey cancer patients who consume an extract of the Basidiomycetes Agaricus blazei Murill mushroom (Sen-Sei-Ro) to measure their self-assessment of its effects and to develop an instrument for use in future randomized trials. METHODS. We designed, translated and mailed a survey to 2,346 Japanese consumers of Sen-Sei-Ro self-designated as cancer patients. The survey assessed consumer demographics, cancer history, Sen-Sei-Ro consumption, and its perceived effects. We performed exploratory psychometric analyses to identify distinct, multi-item scales that could summarize perceptions of effects. RESULTS. We received completed questionnaires from 782 (33%) of the sampled Sen-Sei-Ro consumers with a cancer history. Respondents represented a broad range of cancer patients familiar with Sen-Sei-Ro. Nearly all had begun consumption after their cancer diagnosis. These consumers expressed consistently positive views, though not extremely so, with more benefit reported for more abstract benefits such as emotional and physical well-being than relief of specific symptoms. We identified two conceptually and empirically distinct and internally consistent summary scales measuring Sen-Sei-Ro consumers' perceptions of its effects, Relief of Symptoms and Functional Well-being (Cronbach's alpha: Relief of Symptoms, α = .74; Functional Well-Being, α = .91). CONCLUSION. Respondents to our survey of Sen-Sei-Ro consumers with cancer reported favorable perceived effects from its use. Our instrument, when further validated, may be a useful outcome in trials assessing this and other complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) substances in cancer patients.Kyowa-S.S.I., Tokyo, Japa
