The inside condition of the drying air (% relative humidity) in a drying process is a crucial parameter to consider during the dehydration of commodities but this is often neglected yielding to food losses. The study identified the dehumidification efficiency of the Automated Multi Commodity Heat Pump Dryer (AMCHPD) in terms of the percent Relative humidity, ambient (RHa) and Relative humidity, desired (RHd). The AMCHPD was set to drying process using 5 selected fruits and vegetables, namely: mango, pineapple, moringa, saluyot and ube, respectively. From each drying process, the RHa and RHd were recorded in a database using a Raspberry pi. Average RHa and RHd were calculated using MS Excel. The % DHE was calculated using the formula: . Research findings revealed that the average RHa using the 5 commodities is 80.0% and the average RHd is 18.0% yielding to a 77.5% DHE. This means that the % RHd required to extract the initial moisture content of the commodities dehydrated is within the standard which is > or = to 18.0% and the calculated % DHE falls within the standard simulated in a convective drying method. Thus, the assembly of the major components of the AMCHPD was appropriate such that the operating conditions of the drying system are ideal

Endurance trainers and athletes are at higher risk for caries and periodontal disease as reported by research studies during the past decades. This study evaluated the effects of moderate intensity exercise (MIE) and high intensity exercise (HIE) on biomarkers of saliva, specifically on: salivary flow rate and pH. Furthermore, it analyzed the effects on different groups based on gender, diet, regularity of exercise and nationality. Under the guidance and supervision of the researchers, each participant was subjected to MIE and HIE, with samples of saliva collected before and after each exercise interval. Research findings showed that there is indeed an increase in salivary flow rate and a decrease in salivary pH during HIE. Moreover, it showed that these changes have greater impact in HIE compared to MIE. The groups at risk on a decrease in pH during HIE are females, non-Filipinos and non-vegetarians. While the groups that displayed an increase in flow rate during HIE are males, non- vegetarians, regular exercisers, non-Filipinos and Filipinos. Although the pH decreased during HIE, the mean levels remained within physiological normal limits. And the increase in flow rate contributed to an enhanced cleansing ability of saliva during HIE

Moringa oleifera Lam is a very common plant in tropical countries such as the Philippines. Recently, the Philippine Congress approved it as the national vegetable because of its various health benefits. Through phytochemical analysis the study generally identified the secondary compounds of its three varieties namely; Native, Yard Long, and Chinese. The study aimed to establish the secondary compounds of the three varieties that would be potential components of toothpaste. Gathering samples of the three varieties was done at the university campus. Each variety was dried using the Multi commodity heat pump dryer to preserve their nutritional contents before crude extraction that was done at the Department of Science and Technology- Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) using 95% ethanol. Each extract was subjected to phytochemical analysis using standard laboratory procedures. Results revealed that the extracts contain flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins that are known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, these Moringa varieties have potential natural components in the manufacture of toothpastes

Dental caries is the leading cause of oral diseases in young children all throughout the world. It occurs as a result of the dissolution and destruction of the enamel surface by the microorganisms. The purpose of the study is to compare the prevalence of first permanent molar caries among sever year old school-aged children as a basis for the use of pit and fissure sealants. Specifically were to answer the following: 1) What is the number of 7 year old children with fully erupted first permanent molars?; 2) What is the prevalence and degree of existing caries on all the first permanent molars using ICDAS II method of caries assessment, in terms of: a)Sealable non-carious/ ICDAS II code 0, b)Sealable carious/ ICDAS II code 1 & 2, and c)Non-sealable carious/ ICDAS II code 3-6 ; and 3) Is there a gender predilection in the development of dental caries. The descriptive research design was used to utilize the ICDAS II caries index to assess the prevalence of the caries on the permanent molars. A total of 36 respondents were examined in this study. Data was analyzed using frequency, distribution and Chi-square test. Initially, there were 47 participants or the proposed study ages 7 years old, but only 36 (76.60%) of them met the inclusion criteria of having their first permanent molars fully erupted. Results showed that out of 144 teeth of the respondents, there were 121 sealable non-carious, 14 sealable carious, and 9 non-sealable carious teeth. There was no gender predilection. The study showed that there is a high percentage of sealable non-carious permanent molar, which is the appropriate age to strongly implement the application of pit and fissure sealant. This would significantly benefit in preventing and/or inhibiting the occurrence of caries in 1st permanent molars

Plate number recording is a practice that is done in vehicular terminals to ensure the security and order inside the premise that corresponds to the vehicular terminal. The Adventist University of the Philippines adopts the method by manual logging of plate numbers at the university main gate. The study designed an automation process of recording vehicle’s plate number using Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) algorithm, a barrier beam prototype-to-software interaction using Arduino microcontroller, and secured data storage using MySQL administrator. Findings showed that the ALPR library is tuned to have greater affinity with 2016 Philippine Plate Number format. The software interacts with the barrier beam through serial communication that which is facilitated by the microcontroller. The system is able to detect and recognize the plate number of interacting vehicles, and store it in the database with minimum supervision required. It also has the ability to distinguish local vehicles from the visiting ones. The system’s override capabilities compensate for the ever-varying environment and situation in the university. On the other hand, the barrier beam reacts accordingly for every prompt given by the system. The proposed system is warranted as useful for automating the license plate recording process in the university’s vehicular terminals

    No full text
This study aims to know if storytelling is an effective method in reducing children’s dental anxiety prior to dental treatment procedures. A one-group pretest-posttest quasi experimental design study was conducted on eight (8) children ages between 5–8 years with high dental anxiety. A single pre-test observation is taken on the group of participants, storytelling intervention, afterwards was a single post-test observation on the same measure. Pre-test and post-test level of dental anxiety was assessed by using the Faces Version of the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDASf). The pre- test mean score of the participants was 3.91 which suggest a high level of dental anxiety. The post-test mean score was 2.98 which suggest a moderate dental anxiety level. The results show that storytelling helps in lowering the dental anxiety of the children (t = -10.003; p = .000). Study showed that age (H = 2.500; p = 0.475), gender (U = 5.00; p = 0.456) and frequency of dental visit (H = 0.717; p = 0.699) does not determine the children’s dental anxiety level. This study has highlighted that storytelling can reduce the dental anxiety level of children prior dental treatment procedures. This implies that storytelling can be a pre-behavior management method to prepare children with dental anxiety before their dental visit
