Can a gravitational wave and a magnetic monopole coexist?
We investigate the behavior of small perturbations around the Kaluza-Klein
monopole in the five dimensional space-time. We find that the even parity
gravitational wave does not propagate in the five dimensional space-time with
Kaluza-Klein monopole provided that the gravitational wave is constant in the
fifth direction. We conclude that a gravitational wave and a U(1) magnetic
monopole do not coexist in five dimensional Kaluza-Klein spacetime.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX. To appear in Modern Physics Letters
Alternative final steps in berberine biosynthesis in Coptis japonica cell cultures
In Coptis japonica cell cultures an alternative pathway has been discovered which leads from (S)-tetrahydrocolumbamine via (S)-canadine to berberine. The two enzymes involved have been partially purified. (S)-Tetrahydrocolumbamine is stereospecifically transformed into (S)-canadine under formation of the methylenedioxy bridge in ring A. This new enzyme was named (S)-canadine synthase. (S)-Canadine in turn is stereospecifically dehydrogenated to berberine by an oxidase, (S)-canadine oxidase (COX), which was partially purified (25-fold). This enzyme has many physical properties in common with the already known (S)-tetrahydroprotoberberine oxidase from Berberis but grossly differs from the latter enzyme in its cofactor requirement (Fe) and its substrate specificity. Neither (S)-norreticuline nor (S)-scoulerine serves as substrate for the Coptis enzyme, while both substrates are readily oxidized by the Berberis enzyme. The four terminal enzymes catalyzing the pathway from (S)-reticuline to berberine are housed in Berberis as well as in Coptis in smooth vesicles with a density of =1.14 g/ml. Anisotropic magnetic diffuse scattering in an easy-plane type antiferromagnet ErNiGe
We report on neutron scattering studies of a rare earth intermetallic
compound ErNiGe. Polarized neutron scattering experiments revealed
that the magnetic ordered moment lies in ab-plane. Taking account of
a lack of the third higher harmonic reflection, ErNiGe is
considered to have a helical magnetic structure. The magnetic scattering
profiles along the - and the -directions are well
described by the sum of Gaussian and modified-Lorentzian terms, even far below
, indicating that short-range orders coexist with a
long-range order. Interestingly, the modified-Lorentzian-type diffuse
scattering is not present in the profiles along the -direction.
The anisotropy of the diffuse scattering suggests that the short-range-order

Anomalous phase of MnP at very low field
Manganese phosphide MnP has been investigated for decades because of its rich
magnetic phase diagram. It is well known that the MnP exhibits the
ferromagnetic phase transition at \Tc=292 K and the helical magnetic phase
below \TN=47 K at zero field. Recently, a novel magnetic phase transition was
observed at K when the magnetic field is lower than 5 Oe. However,
the nature of the new phase has not been illuminated yet. In order to reveal
it, we performed the AC and the DC magnetization measurements for a single
crystal MnP at very low field. A divergent behavior of the real and the
imaginary part of the AC susceptibility and a sharp increase of the DC
magnetization was observed at , indicating the magnetic phase transition
at . Furthermore a peculiar temperature hysteresis was observed: namely,
the magnetization depends on whether cooling sample to the temperature lower
than \TN or not before the measurements. This hysteresis phenomenon suggests
the complicated nature of the new phase and a strong relation between the
magnetic state of the new phase and the helical structure.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
New Power Module Integrating Output Current Measurement Function
This paper proposes a new power module concept that integrates output current measurement function to make inverters compact. The current measurement function is realized by tiny printed-circuit-board (PCB) Rogowski coils. The PCB Rogowski coil picks up a switching current flowing through an IGBT chip, and then a combination of a digital circuit based on a field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) and an integrator circuit reproduces the output current of the inverter from the switching current. A major concern of the new power module is the effect of reverse recovery current of free-wheeling diodes because the reverse recovery current is superimposed on the switching current. Propulsion system tests on a full scale Centaur vehicle to investigate 3-burn mission capability of the D-lT configuration
Propulsion system tests were conducted on a full scale Centaur vehicle to investigate system capability of the proposed D-lT configuration for a three-burn mission. This particular mission profile requires that the engines be capable of restarting and firing for a final maneuver after a 5-1/2-hour coast to synchronous orbit. The thermal conditioning requirements of the engine and propellant feed system components for engine start under these conditions were investigated. Performance data were also obtained on the D-lT type computer controlled propellant tank pressurization system. The test results demonstrated that the RL-10 engines on the Centaur vehicle could be started and run reliably after being thermally conditioned to predicted engine start conditions for a one, two and three burn mission. Investigation of the thermal margins also indicated that engine starts could be accomplished at the maximum predicted component temperature conditions with prestart durations less than planned for flight
Tests of a proximity focusing RICH with aerogel as radiator
Using aerogel as radiator and multianode PMTs for photon detection, a
proximity focusing Cherenkov ring imaging detector has been constructed and
tested in the KEK 2 beam. The aim is to experimentally study the basic
parameters such as resolution of the single photon Cherenkov angle and number
of detected photons per ring. The resolution obtained is well approximated by
estimates of contributions from pixel size and emission point uncertainty. The
number of detected photons per Cherenkov ring is in good agreement with
estimates based on aerogel and detector characteristics. The values obtained
turn out to be rather low, mainly due to Rayleigh scattering and to the
relatively large dead space between the photocathodes. A light collection
system or a higher fraction of the photomultiplier active area, together with
better quality aerogels are expected to improve the situation. The reduction of
Cherenkov yield, for charged particle impact in the vicinity of the aerogel
tile side wall, has also been measured.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figure
Olfactory Cues from Plants Infected by Powdery Mildew Guide Foraging by a Mycophagous Ladybird Beetle
Powdery mildews (Erysiphales) are economically important plant pathogens that attack many agricultural crops. Conventional management strategies involving fungicide application face challenges, including the evolution of resistance and concerns over impacts on non-target organisms, that call for investigation of more sustainable alternatives. Mycophagous ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) feed on powdery mildew and have considerable potential as biological control agents; however, the foraging ecology and behavior of these beetles is not well understood. Here we document the olfactory cues presented by squash plants (Cucurbita moschata) infected by powdery mildew (Podosphaera sp.) and the behavioral responses of twenty-spotted ladybird beetles (Psyllobora vigintimaculata) to these cues. Volatile analyses through gas chromatography revealed a number of volatile compounds characteristic of infected plants, including 3-octanol and its analogues 1-octen-3-ol and 3-octanone. These compounds are typical “moldy” odorants previously reported in volatiles collected from other fungi. In addition, infected plants exhibited elevated emissions of several compounds also observed in collections from healthy leaves, including linalool and benzyl alcohol, which are reported to have anti-fungal properties. In Y-tube choice assays, P. vigintimaculata beetles displayed a significant preference for the odors of infected plants compared to those of healthy plants. Moreover, beetles exhibited strong attraction to one individual compound, 1-octen-3-ol, which was the most abundant of the characteristic fungal compounds identified. These results enhance our understanding of the olfactory cues that guide foraging by mycophagous insects and may facilitate the development of integrated disease-management strategies informed by an understanding of underlying ecological mechanisms
<Session 5: Wildlife Tracking I>Simultaneous measurements of breaths and energy expenditure reveal the dive tactics of sea turtles
19–22 May 2022 Kyoto, JapanAir-breathing divers are assumed to have evolved to apportion their time between surface and underwater periods to maximize the benefit gained from diving activities. However, whether they change their time allocation depending on the aim of the dive is still unknown. This may be particularly crucial for 'surfacers' because they dive for various purposes in addition to foraging. In this study, we counted breath events at the surface and estimated oxygen consumption during resting, foraging, and other dives in 11 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the wild. Breath events were counted by a head-mounted acceleration logger or direct observation based on an animal-borne video logger, and oxygen consumption was estimated by measuring overall dynamic body acceleration. Our results indicate that green turtles maximized their submerged time, following this with 5-7 breaths to replenish oxygen for resting dives. However, they changed their dive tactic during foraging and other dives; they surfaced without depleting their oxygen content, followed by only a few breaths for effective foraging and locomotion. These dichotomous surfacing tactics would be the result of behavioral modifications by turtles depending on the aim of each dive
