    Spin-Forster transfer in optically excited quantum dots

    The mechanisms of energy and spin transfer in quantum dot pairs coupled via the Coulomb interaction are studied. Exciton transfer can be resonant or phonon-assisted. In both cases, the transfer rates strongly depend on the resonance conditions. The spin selection rules in the transfer process come from the exchange and spin-orbit interactions. The character of energy dissipation in spin transfer is different than that in the traditional spin currents. The spin-dependent photon cross-correlation functions reflect the exciton transfer process. In addition, a mathematical method to calculate F\"orster transfer in crystalline nanostructures beyond the dipole-dipole approximation is described.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, Phys. Rev.     HTS pulse-stretcher and second order modulator: design and first results

    One of the remaining challenges in the application of superconducting electronics is the interfacing between superconducting and semiconducting environments. The voltage and speed mismatch between RSFQ pulses and semiconducting read-out electronics makes it necessary to amplify as well as stretch the RSFQ pulses. Moreover, circuits based on HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) technology are very attractive since they can operate under considerably relaxed cooling effort, which is one of the main problems with LTS (Low Temperature Superconductor) circuits. Within the European project SuperADC, a HTS second order sigma delta modulator and a pulse stretcher, used as an interface between the modulator and the first semi-conducting amplifier stage, have been designed at Twente University and will be presented here

    Optical properties of coupled metal-semiconductor and metal-molecule nanocrystal complexes: the role of multipole effects

    We investigate theoretically the effects of interaction between an optical dipole (semiconductor quantum dot or molecule) and metal nanoparticles. The calculated absorption spectra of hybrid structures demonstrate strong effects of interference coming from the exciton-plasmon coupling. In particular, the absorption spectra acquire characteristic asymmetric lineshapes and strong anti-resonances. We present here an exact solution of the problem beyond the dipole approximation and find that the multipole treatment of the interaction is crucial for the understanding of strongly-interacting exciton-plasmon nano-systems. Interestingly, the visibility of the exciton resonance becomes greatly enhanced for small inter-particle distances due to the interference phenomenon, multipole effects, and electromagnetic enhancement. We find that the destructive interference is particularly strong. Using our exact theory, we show that the interference effects can be observed experimentally even in the exciting systems at room temperature.Comment: 9 page

    Ultrafast transport of laser-excited spin polarized carriers in Au/Fe/MgO(001)

    A time domain approach to probe hot carrier-induced spin dynamics is demonstrated. The experiments are performed in epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001), where spin-polarized hot carriers are excited in the Fe layer by 35 fs laser pulses. They propagate to the Au surface where the transient spin polarization is detected by magneto-induced second harmonic generation. Different energies of majority and minority hot carriers excited in the exchange-split Fe band structure lead to their spindependent lifetimes in Au. Accordingly, two spin-polarized current contributions which propagate superdiffusively at different velocities result in a spin current pulse of about 100 fs duration.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Malignant mesotheliomas are rare tumours in domestic cats. They occur within the abdominal or thoracic cavity and are regularly associated with pleural or peritoneal effusions. The histopathological diagnosis can be quite challenging, as these neoplasms may resemble other epithelial or mesenchymal neoplasms. However, differentiation can be achieved by immunohistochemistry in most cases. Here we describe the rare case of a malignant mesothelioma of the fibrous subtype in the thoracic cavity of a cat and discuss differential diagnoses and treatment options for this tumor type
