    X-ray sources as tracers of the large-scale structure in the Universe

    We review the current status of studies of large-scale structure in the X-ray Universe. After motivating the use X-rays for cosmological purposes, we discuss the various approaches used on different angular scales including X-ray background multipoles, cross-correlations of the X-ray background with galaxy catalogues, clustering of X-ray selected sources and small-scale fluctuations and anisotropies in the X-ray background. We discuss the implications of the above studies for the bias parameter of X-ray sources, which is likely to be moderate for X-ray selected AGN and the X-ray background (~1-2).     Injection statistics simulator for dynamic analysis of noise in mesoscopic devices

    We present a model for electron injection from thermal reservoirs which is applied to particle simulations of one-dimensional mesoscopic conductors. The statistics of injected carriers is correctly described from nondegenerate to completely degenerate conditions. The model is validated by comparing Monte Carlo simulations with existing analytical results for the case of ballistic conductors.     Cementitious Properties of Some Iowa Fly Ashes Without Lime Additives

    Seven Iowa fly ashes were evaluated as a construction material for embankments. Test specimens were molded at optimum moisture content for standard AASHO density and moist cured at 71°F for 28 and 120 days. Six of the fly ashes gave unconfined compressive strengths between 42 and 665 psi after 28 days curing plus one day immersion in water. Test specimens were also steam cured in an autoclave to find a possible quick way to evaluate the strength producing characteristics of a fly ash. The strengths obtained after curing for one day in the autoclave give an indication of the strengths that may be obtained at ordinary curing temperature for longer periods. X-ray diffraction patterns of the fly ashes are included. The peaks show that the reactivity of the fly ashes without lime is related to the amount of free lime present in the fly ash. The fly ashes tested could be used in the construction of embankments. Some of them developed enough strength to warrant their use in the construction of subbases and subgrades for roads.     A generalized drift-diffusion model for rectifying Schottky contact simulation

    We present a discussion on the modeling of Schottky barrier rectifying contacts (diodes) within the framework of partial-differential-equation-based physical simulations. We propose a physically consistent generalization of the drift-diffusion model to describe the boundary layer close to the Schottky barrier where thermionic emission leads to a non-Maxwellian carrier distribution, including a novel boundary condition at the contact. The modified drift-diffusion model is validated against Monte Carlo simulations of a GaAs device.     Doorway States and Billiards

    Whenever a distinct state is immersed in a sea of complicated and dense states, the strength of the distinct state, which we refer to as a doorway, is distributed in their neighboring states. We analyze this mechanism for 2-D billiards with different geometries. One of them is symmetric and integrable, another is symmetric but chaotic, and the third has a capricious form.     Noise suppression due to long-range Coulomb interaction: Crossover between diffusive and ballistic transport regimes

    We present a Monte Carlo analysis of shot-noise suppression due to long-range Coulomb interaction in semiconductor samples under a crossover between diffusive and ballistic transport regimes. By varying the mean time between collisions we find that the strong suppression observed under the ballistic regime persists under quasi-ballistic conditions, before being washed out when a complete diffusive regime is reached.Comment: RevTex, 3 pages, 4 figures, minor correction
