Primary care groups and trusts have a vital part to play in overcoming the variability, fragmentation, and isolation that have been the weaknesses of primary health care in the NHS. Primary care groups and trusts have introduced initiatives to promote greater collaboration between general practices and to share expertise and resources. Improving access to care is an important feature of the modernisation plan, and most groups and trusts are actively promoting access, particularly for people who have been poorly served traditionally.     Making Nuclei Out Of The Skyrme Crystal

    A new method for approximating Skyrme solutions is developed. It consists of cutting sections out of the Skyrme crystal and smoothly interpolating between the boundary and spatial infinity. Several field configurations are constructed, and their energies calculated. The surface energy (per unit area) of an infinite flat plane of the crystal is also calculated, and the result used to derive a formula analogous to the semi-empirical mass formula of nuclear physics. This formula can be used to give some idea of what the Skyrme model predicts about volume and surface energies of the nucleus over a broad range of baryon numbers.Comment: 20 pages, uuencoded ps file `crystal.uu'.     Botulinum neurotoxin type C protease induces apoptosis in differentiated human neuroblastoma cells

    Neuroblastomas constitute a major cause of cancer-related deaths in young children. In recent years, a number of translation-inhibiting enzymes have been evaluated for killing neuroblastoma cells. Here we investigated the potential vulnerability of human neuroblastoma cells to protease activity derived from botulinum neurotoxin type C. We show that following retinoic acid treatment, human neuroblastoma cells, SiMa and SH-SY5Y, acquire a neuronal phenotype evidenced by axonal growth and expression of neuronal markers. Botulinum neurotoxin type C which cleaves neuron-specific SNAP25 and syntaxin1 caused apoptotic death only in differentiated neuroblastoma cells. Direct comparison of translation-inhibiting enzymes and the type C botulinum protease revealed one order higher cytotoxic potency of the latter suggesting a novel neuroblastoma-targeting pathway. Our mechanistic insights revealed that loss of ubiquitous SNAP23 due to differentiation coupled to SNAP25 cleavage due to botulinum activity may underlie the apoptotic death of human neuroblastoma cells

    Anyonic Bogomol'nyi Solitons in a Gauged O(3) Sigma Model

    We introduce the self-dual abelian gauged O(3)O(3) sigma models where the Maxwell and Chern-Simons terms constitute the kinetic terms for the gauge field. These models have quite rich structures and various limits. Our models are found to exhibit both symmetric and broken phases of the gauge group.     Baby Skyrme models for a class of potentials

    We consider a class of (2+1) dimensional baby Skyrme models with potentials that have more than one vacum. These potentials are generalisation of old and new baby Skyrme models;they involve more complicated dependence on phi_3.We find that when the potential is invariant under phi_3 -> -phi_3 the configuration corresponding to the baby skyrmions lying "on top of each other" are the minima of the energy. However when the potential breaks this symmetry the lowest field configurations correspond to separated baby skyrmions. We compute the energy distributions for skyrmions of degrees between one and eight and discuss their geometrical shapes and binding energies. We also compare the 2-skyrmion states for these potentials. Most of our work has been performed numerically with the model being formulated in terms of three real scalar fields (satisfying one constraint).Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, 10 figure

    A Semi-Analytical Analysis of Texture Collapse

    This study presents a simplified approach to studying the dynamics of global texture collapse. We derive equations of motion for a spherically symmetric field configuration using a two parameter ansatz. Then we analyse the effective potential for the resulting theory to understand possible trajectories of the field configuration in the parameter space of the ansatz. Numerical results are given for critical winding and collapse time in spatially flat non-expanding, and flat expanding universes.     Reparametrising the Skyrme Model using the Lithium-6 Nucleus

    The minimal energy B=6 solution of the Skyrme model is a static soliton with D4dD_{4d} symmetry. The symmetries of the solution imply that the quantum numbers of the ground state are the same as those of the Lithium-6 nucleus. This identification is considered further by obtaining expressions for the mean charge radius and quadrupole moment, dependent only on the Skyrme model parameters ee (a dimensionless constant) and FπF_\pi (the pion decay constant). The optimal values of these parameters have often been deliberated upon, and we propose, for B>2B>2, changing them from those which are most commonly accepted. We obtain specific values for these parameters for B=6, by matching with properties of the Lithium-6 nucleus. We find further support for the new values by reconsidering the α\alpha-particle and deuteron as quantized B=4 and B=2 Skyrmions.Comment: 18 page

    Where are the Hedgehogs in Nematics?

    In experiments which take a liquid crystal rapidly from the isotropic to the nematic phase, a dense tangle of defects is formed. In nematics, there are in principle both line and point defects (``hedgehogs''), but no point defects are observed until the defect network has coarsened appreciably. In this letter the expected density of point defects is shown to be extremely low, approximately 10−810^{-8} per initially correlated domain, as result of the topology (specifically, the homology) of the order parameter space.Comment: 6 pages, latex, 1 figure (self-unpacking PostScript)
