Direct Evidence for the Dirac-Cone Topological Surface States in Ternary Chalcogenide TlBiSe2

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on TlBiSe2, which is a member of the ternary chalcogenides theoretically proposed as candidates for a new class of three-dimensional topological insulators. By measuring the energy band dispersions over the entire surface Brillouin zone, we found a direct evidence for a non-trivial surface metallic state showing a X-shaped energy dispersion within the bulk band gap. The present result unambiguously establishes that TlBiSe2 is a strong topological insulator with a single Dirac cone at the Brillouin-zone center. The observed bulk band gap of 0.4 eV is the largest among known topological insulators, making TlBiSe2 the most promising material for studying room-temperature topological phenomena.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Neonatal Intrathymic Splenocyte Injection Yields Prolonged Cardiac Xenograft Survival

Intrathymic (i.t.) injection of allogenic cells without administration of anti-lymphocyte serum (ALS) in neonatal recipients has induced donor-specific tolerance to subsequent cardiac allografts in rats. This study examines whether similar tactics can be successfully applied to a hamster-to-rat cardiac xenotransplantation model. Lewis neonates on their first day of life underwent i.t., subcutaneous (s.c.), intraperitoneal (i.p.), or intravenous (i.v.) injections of 5 x 10(7) Golden Syrian hamster splenocytes. After six weeks, the rats underwent heterotopic cardiac transplantation of hamster hearts. Cyclophosphamide (CyP) was administered on the day before surgery and postoperatively to suppress antibody-mediated graft rejection. Rats given splenocytes with 80 mg/kg of CyP had the following graft survival times: 8 to 12 days for i.t. injection (mean, 9.4 days); 5 to 7 days for s.c. injection (mean, 6.6 days); 4 to 11 days for i.p. injection (mean, 7.4 days); and 4 to 13 days for i.v. injection (mean, 7.9 days). Only the extension of graft survival produced by i.t. injection was statistically significant in comparison with the rats given only CyP treatment (mean, 7.5 days; P < 0.05). Thus, it appears that i.t. injection of xenogenic splenocytes in neonatal recipients with administration of CyP, but without ALS, can prolong xenograft survival. This biological intervention may be most useful in pediatric xenotransplantation when combined with other immunomodulation techniques.</p

Three-dimensional porous graphene networks expand graphene-based electronic device applications

In recent years, there has been increasing demand for 3D porous graphene structures with excellent 2D characteristics and great potential. As one avenue, several approaches for fabricating 3D porous graphene network structures have been proposed to realize multi-functional graphene materials with 2D graphene structures. Herein, we overview characteristics of 3D porous graphene for applications in future electronic devices along with physical insights into “2D to 3D graphene”, in which the characters of 2D graphene such as massless Dirac fermions are well preserved. The present review thus summarizes recent 3D porous graphene studies with a perspective for providing new and board applications of graphene in electronic devices

Antiferromagnetic topological insulator with selectively gapped Dirac cones

Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure

Objectives. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of personalized peptide vaccination (PPV) combined with chemotherapy for patients with previously treated advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients and Methods. Previously treated PS0-1 patients with IIIB/IV EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) wild genotype NSCLC were randomly assigned to docetaxel (60 mg/m 2 on Day 1) plus PPV based on preexisting host immunity or docetaxel plus placebo. Docetaxel administration was repeated every 3 weeks until disease progression. Personalized peptides or placebo was injected subcutaneously weekly in the first 8 weeks and biweekly in subsequent 16 weeks. The primary efficacy endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Results. PPV related toxicity was grade 2 or less skin reaction. The median PFS for placebo arm and PPV arm was 52 days and 59 days, respectively. There was no significant difference between two arms by log-rank test ( = 0.42). Interestingly, PFS and overall survival (OS) in humoral immunological responder were significantly longer than those in nonresponder. Conclusion. PPV did not improve the survival in combination with docetaxel for previously treated advanced NSCLC. However, PPV may be efficacious for the humoral immunological responders and a further clinical investigation is needed
