New pedagogies and re-usable learning objects: toward a new economy in education

While the idea of reusing objects in digital learning environments is not new, continual strides are being made toward improving the prospects of reusability. However, three of the main steps in reusability—finding a pedagogy in which both contribution and reusability are regular aspects, having a convenient technology for all stages of contribution and reuse, and finding institutional motivation and support for reuse—are far from common procedures in most higher education and company training settings. In this article we describe a shift in pedagogy and technology requirements that we see as major steps in accelerating the reusability process. We also position the reusability process in a broader context: an evolution in education and training toward either a Stretching the Mold Scenario or a New Economy Scenario

Ubiquitous Learning, Leren in een intelligente omgeving?

Deze studie naar de mogelijkheden van Ubiquitous Learning heeft als doel om antwoord te geven op de vraag welke rol Ubiquitous Learning kan spelen in het hoger onderwijs. Deze studie dient als inventarisatie van de mogelijkheden en zou kunnen dienen als handvat voor instellingen die met Ubiquitous Learning aan de slag willen. De studie start met een omschrijving van Ubiquitous Learning en factoren die bij Ubiquitous Learning van belang zijn. Hierbij wordt ook ingegaan op het verschil met bijvoorbeeld Mobile Learning en Wireless Learning, ontwikkelingen die onderdeel kunnen zijn van Ubiquitous Learning. Na het definiëren van Ubiquitous Learning wordt een overzicht gegeven van bestaande ervaringen en worden mogelijke scenario’s voor Ubiquitous Learning geschetst vanuit het perspectief van zowel de student, de docent als de instelling. Op basis van de bestaande ervaringen en mogelijke scenario’s wordt daarna ingegaan op de (on)mogelijkheden van Ubiquitous Learning op dit moment of in de nabije toekomst en wordt gepoogd om een voorspelling te doen van de mogelijkheden van Ubiquitous Learning in de wat verdere toekomst. Tot slot worden aanbevelingen gedaan met betrekking tot het gebruik van Ubiquitous Learning in het onderwijs

Learning management systems: one size fits all?

Learning management systems such as WebCT and Blackboard are rapidly becoming the principal systems behind institutions' moves to technology-based learning settings. In settings where lecturers have had no or limited exposure to ICT as a teaching tool, LMSs pave the way for quick introduction and eventual adoption of technology-based teaching practices. Many lecturers quickly progress and grow in the field. But there are those who argue that the use of LMS tend to be counter-productive and that in their current forms, they cannot be used effectively as a learning tool. Critics argue that they support only traditional forms of teaching and encourage poor learning designs in their implementation. This panel will explore LMSs as they exist today and will explore whether they are the solution to a pressing problem or in fact problems within themselves
