Analysis of the Prospect.3 conference “Thirty Years of Meaning and Influence - Flash of the Spirit: African & Afro-American Art & Philosophy by Robert Farris Thompson”: An Internship Report

In 2008, Prospect New Orleans (Prospect) launched the first internationally contemporary art biennial in the United States with a goal to articulate new discoveries in the world of art with historical and culturally significant surroundings. In its fourth iteration in 2014 and with a new staff borne of past successes and failures, which included near-dissolution from financial difficulty, Prospect.3: Notes for Now (Prospect.3) ambitiously expanded with additional artists, venues, and programs. “Thirty Years of Meaning and Influence - Flash of the Spirit: African & Afro-American Art & Philosophy by Robert Farris Thompson” was an international conference that was one of 60 programs produced by Prospect.3 from October 25, 2014 – January 25, 2015. The purpose of this report is to document my internship as Conference Coordinator for the two-day conference and to analyze its purpose in the greater context of the large biennial. For this review, the function of the conference and the institutional effectiveness of the organization are summarized through a SWOT analysis to compare the event results to other similar organizations to determine the best practices to successfully integrate concept, form, management, evaluation and conclusion. This thoughtful examination is used to make recommendations for future Prospect programming to be further strengthened through the research of Best Practices with suggested application

Latin lives on! Classical and post-classical Latin

    Get PDF
This project developed a new and exciting introductory Latin course integrating classical and post-classical Latin for undergraduates studying Ancient History, Archaeology, History and English. In addition to a firm grounding in basic Latin grammar, the module explores how Latin lived on in many forms beyond the Roman Empire up to the twentieth century. Intertextuality between classical texts (e.g. Virgil) with the post-classical texts they inspired (e.g., Alcuin, Milton) forms a key component of the module. Readings are drawn from a wide range of sources beyond standard 'texts' including coins, graffiti and inscriptions. This module provides a valuable skill for students studying and researching historical, literary and historical archaeological topics. Themes covered include: history writing, letters, biography/hagiography, letters, student writing, pastoral poetry, legal texts, mythology, geography and travel writing, erotic/love poetry, satire and humour, oratory/rhetoric and sermons

Magnetic pair creation transparency in gamma-ray pulsars

    Get PDF
Magnetic pair creation, ĂŽÂł [arrow right] e + e - , is a key component in polar cap models of gamma-ray pulsars, and has informed assumptions about the still poorly understood radio emission. The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope has now detected more than 100 ĂŽÂł-ray pulsars, providing rich information for the interpretation of young energetic pulsars and old millisecond pulsars. Fermi observations have established that the high-energy spectra of most of these pulsars have exponential turnovers in the 1-10 GeV range. These turnovers are too gradual to arise from magnetic pair creation in the strong magnetic fields of pulsar inner magnetospheres, so their energy can be used to provide a physically motivated lower bound to the typical altitude of GeV band emission. This work computes pair creation opacities for photon propagation in neutron star magnetospheres. It explores the constraints that can be placed on the emission location of Fermi ĂŽÂł-rays due to single-photon pair creation transparency below the turnover energy, as well as the limitations of this technique. These altitude bounds are typically in the range of 2-6 neutron star radii for the Fermi pulsar sample, and provide one of the few possible constraints on the emission altitude in radio quiet pulsars that do not possess double-peaked pulse profiles
