    The concept of revolution in social forms: a sociological analysis

    This thesis presents a sociological analysis of the concept of revolution in social forms. It is argued that any concept of revolution makes available a version of the relationship of speech to language. The concept of a revolution in social forms is grounded in a view of the relationship of the revolutionary enterprise to the dialectical transformation of man's nature or essence. Two modes of orientation to Marx's revolutionary theorising are analysed: 1. The principled version which understands Marx's theorising as offering a concept of revolution as universal and engaged orientation to principle. 2. The rule-bound version which views Marx as representing revolution in terms of technique - the 'correct rules' for subverting capitalism. We investigate the redirection of the principled vision in Marx by Lenin, Stalin, Trotsky and Mao. Finally we consider the rediscovery and development of the principled tradition in tendencies within modernism

    © 2020 The Authors Individuals suffering from diabetes have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications such as heart failure. Heart failure can be a result of the stiffening of the left ventricle, which occurs when cardiac fibroblasts become “active” and begin to remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM). Fibroblast “activation” can be triggered by the AGE/RAGE signaling cascade. Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) are produced and accumulate in the ECM over time in a healthy individual, but under hyperglycemic conditions, this process is accelerated. In this study, we investigated how the presence of AGEs in either non-diabetic or diabetic ECM affected fibroblast-mediated matrix remodeling. In order to address this question, diabetic and non-diabetic fibroblasts were embedded in 3D matrices composed of collagen isolated from either non-diabetic or diabetic mice. Fibroblast function was assessed using gel contraction, migration, and protein expression. Non-diabetic fibroblasts displayed similar gel contraction to diabetic cells when embedded in diabetic collagen. Thus, suggesting the diabetic ECM can alter fibroblast function from an “inactive” to “active” state. Addition of AGEs increase the AGE/RAGE cascade leading to increased gel contraction, whereas inhibiting the cascade resulted in little or no gel contraction. These results indicated 1) the ECM from diabetic and non-diabetic mice differ from one another, 2) diabetic ECM can impact fibroblast function and shift them toward an “active” state, and 3) that fibroblasts can modify the ECM through activation of the AGE/RAGE signaling cascade. These results suggested the importance of understanding the impact diabetes has on the ECM and fibroblast function

    High Angular Resolution Stellar Imaging with Occultations from the Cassini Spacecraft II: Kronocyclic Tomography

    We present an advance in the use of Cassini observations of stellar occultations by the rings of Saturn for stellar studies. Stewart et al. (2013) demonstrated the potential use of such observations for measuring stellar angular diameters. Here, we use these same observations, and tomographic imaging reconstruction techniques, to produce two dimensional images of complex stellar systems. We detail the determination of the basic observational reference frame. A technique for recovering model-independent brightness profiles for data from each occulting edge is discussed, along with the tomographic combination of these profiles to build an image of the source star. Finally we demonstrate the technique with recovered images of the {\alpha} Centauri binary system and the circumstellar environment of the evolved late-type giant star, Mira.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by MNRA

    The Role of Intrusive Imagery in Hoarding Disorder

    Despite the incidence of trauma in the histories of people with Hoarding Disorder (HD), reexperiencing symptoms, namely intrusive images, have not been investigated in the condition. To address this, 27 individuals who met DSM-5 criteria for HD and 28 community controls (CCs) were interviewed about (a) their everyday experiences of intrusive imagery, and (b) the unexpected images they experience when discarding high- and low-value possessions. Compared to CCs, everyday images described by the HD group were more frequent, had a greater negative valence, and were associated with greater interference in everyday life and attempts to avoid the imagery. With regard to discard-related imagery, a MANOVA followed up with mixed ANOVAs showed that HD participants reported more negative experiences of intrusive imagery in comparison with CCs during recent episodes of discarding objects of low subjective value. However, HD and CC participants both experienced positive imagery when discarding high-value objects. CC participants reported greater avoidance of imagery in the high-value object condition, but imagery-avoidance did not change between conditions for HD participants. The findings are discussed, particularly in relation to the potential of imagery-based interventions for HD

    A preliminary investigation of the use of throttles for emergency flight control

    A preliminary investigation was conducted regarding the use of throttles for emergency flight control of a multiengine aircraft. Several airplanes including a light twin-engine piston-powered airplane, jet transports, and a high performance fighter were studied during flight and piloted simulations. Simulation studies used the B-720, B-727, MD-11, and F-15 aircraft. Flight studies used the Lear 24, Piper PA-30, and F-15 airplanes. Based on simulator and flight results, all the airplanes exhibited some control capability with throttles. With piloted simulators, landings using manual throttles-only control were extremely difficult. An augmented control system was developed that converts conventional pilot stick inputs into appropriate throttle commands. With the augmented system, the B-720 and F-15 simulations were evaluated and could be landed successfully. Flight and simulation data were compared for the F-15 airplane

    Observation of a subgap density of states in superconductor-normal metal bilayers in the Cooper limit

    We present transport and tunneling measurements of Pb-Ag bilayers with thicknesses, dPbd_{Pb} and dAgd_{Ag}, that are much less than the superconducting coherence length. The transition temperature, TcT_c, and energy gap, Δ\Delta, in the tunneling Density of States (DOS) decrease exponentially with dAgd_{Ag} at fixed dPbd_{Pb}. Simultaneously, a DOS that increases linearly from the Fermi energy grows and fills nearly 40% of the gap as TcT_c is 1/10 of TcT_c of bulk Pb. This behavior suggests that a growing fraction of quasiparticles decouple from the superconductor as TcT_c goes to 0. The linear dependence is consistent with the quasiparticles becoming trapped on integrable trajectories in the metal layer.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures. Diabetic individuals have an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease due to stiffening of the left ventricle (LV), which is thought to occur, in part, by increased AGE/RAGE signaling inducing fibroblast differentiation. Advanced glycated end-products (AGEs) accumulate within the body over time, and under hyperglycemic conditions, the formation and accumulation of AGEs is accelerated. AGEs exert their effect by binding to their receptor (RAGE) and can induce myofibroblast differentiation, leading to increased cell migration. Previous studies have focused on fibroblast migration during wound healing, in which diabetics have impaired fibroblast migration compared to healthy individuals. However, the impact of diabetic conditions as well as AGE/RAGE signaling has not been extensively studied in cardiac fibroblasts. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine how the AGE/RAGE signaling pathway impacts cell migration in non-diabetic and diabetic cardiac fibroblasts. Cardiac fibroblasts were isolated from non-diabetic and diabetic mice with and without functional RAGE and used to perform a migration assay. Cardiac fibroblasts were plated on plastic, non-diabetic, or diabetic collagen, and when confluency was reached, a line of migration was generated by scratching the plate and followed by treatment with pharmacological agents that modify AGE/RAGE signaling. Modification of the AGE/RAGE signaling cascade was done with ERK1/2 and PKC-ζ inhibitors as well as treatment with exogenous AGEs. Diabetic fibroblasts displayed an increase in migration compared to non-diabetic fibroblasts whereas inhibiting the AGE/RAGE signaling pathway resulted in a significant increase in migration. The results indicate that the AGE/RAGE signaling cascade causes a decrease in cardiac fibroblast migration and altering the pathway will produce alterations in cardiac fibroblast migration
