    Assessing the ecological soundness of organic and conventional agriculture by means of life cycle assessment (LCA) - a case study of leek production

    Purpose – Sustainable agriculture implies the ability of agro-ecosystems to remain productive in the long-term. It is not easy to point out unambiguously whether or not current production systems meet this sustainability demand. A priori thinking would suggest that organic crops are environmentally favourable, but may ignore the effect of reduced productivity, which shifts the potential impact to other parts of the food provision system. The purpose of this paper is to assess the ecological sustainability of conventional and organic leek production by means of life cycle assessment (LCA). Design/methodology/approach – A cradle-to-farm gate LCA is applied, based on real farm data from two research centres. For a consistent comparison, two functional units (FU) were defined: 1ha and 1?kg of leek production. Findings – Assessed on an area basis, organic farming shows a more favourable environmental profile. These overall benefits are strongly reduced when the lower yields are taken into account. Related to organic farming it is therefore important that solutions are found to substantially increase the yields without increasing the environmental burden. Related to conventional farming, important potential for environmental improvements are in optimising the farm nutrient flows, reducing pesticide use and increasing its self-supporting capacity. Research limitations/implications – The research is a cradle-to-farm gate LCA, future research can be expanded to comprise all phases from cradle-to-grave to get an idea of the total sustainability of our present food consumption patterns. The research is also limited to the case of leek production. Future research can apply the methodology to other crops. Originality/value – To date, there is still lack of clear evidence of the added value of organic farming compared to conventional farming on environmental basis. Few studies have compared organic and conventional food production by means of LCA. This paper addresses these issues

    Exposure and health risk assessment of applicators to DDT during indoor residual spraying in malaria vector control program

    We assessed exposure of applicators, health risk of DDT to the applicators and evaluated the applicability of existing pesticide exposure models for indoor residual spraying (IRS). Patch sampling for dermal and personal air sampler for inhalation exposure were used in monitoring 57 applicators on the exposure assessment to DDT. The exposure of the applicators was also estimated using three exposure models. The mean actual dermal exposure was 449 mg total DDT per applicator per one house treatment. The applicators were exposed to DDT much beyond the estimated AOEL (acceptable operator exposure level) of DDT. The exposure estimated with ConsExpo 5.0 b01 model is situated between the median and the 75th percentile of the experimental data. On the other hand, spraying model 1 and spraying model 10 overestimate the exposure. Thus, these three models cannot be directly used for the particular circumstances of IRS as a tool for risk assessment. In general, use of DDT in IRS as a control method for malaria mosquitoes holds a high health risk for the applicators. Strict implementation of spraying procedures stated in the IRS manual of World Health Organization (WHO) is necessary to reduce the exposure level and health risk of applicators to DDT

    Effect of adjuvants on the efficiency of dimethomorph plus mancozeb (Acrobat 2 kg:ha) on the control of late blight

    Industrial adjuvants were tested in combination with dimethomorph plus mancozeb (Acrobat 2 kg/ha) in the field to investigate their efficacy on foliar late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. The tested adjuvant fungicide treatments for late blight control were applied 5 times at 7-day intervals. The effect of the adjuvant fungicide treatments on epidemic development, tuber rot and blight incidence and tuber yields were determined. Last summer late blight development was arrested in July due to high temperatures and lasting drought. August was characterized by rather low temperatures and high rainfall. These weather conditions were very favourable for the development of late blight. Due to the heat waves of June and July the foliage started to die allready in Agust. Because of that no incidence of foliage blight was scored. No significant differences in yield were observed for the different treatments applied. The addition of an adjuvant had a clearly positive effect on the tuber yield. In the control 12,7 % infected tubers were observed. The mean tuber infection of plots sprayed with the Acrobat-adjuvant combinations was 7,4 %

    Effect of adjuvants on the efficiency of benthiavalicarb plus mancozeb (Valbon 1.6 kg/ha) on the control of late blight in potato

    Industrial adjuvants were tested in combination with benthiavalicarb plus mancozeb (Valbon 1.6 kg/ha) in the field to investigate their efficacy on foliar late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. The tested adjuvant-fungicide treatments for late blight control were applied 6 times at 7-day intervals. The effect of the adjuvant-fungicide treatments on epidemic development, tuber blight and tuber yields were determined. Because of the favourable weather conditions a high disease pressure could be observed. The incidence of foliage blight was scored and at the end of the growing season the disease level was lower in plots sprayed with the Valbon-adjuvant combinations than in plots treated with only Valbon. The addition of an adjuvant had a clearly positive effect on the tuber yield although the differences were not significant. In the plots treated with Valbon 6.9 % infected tubers were observed. The mean tuber infection of plots sprayed with the Valbon-adjuvant combinations fluctuated between 2.3 and 15.6 %

    Experimental study of factors influencing the risk of drift from field sprayers Part 2: Spray application technique.

    Recently, spray drift and its effects have become an important aspect of risk assessment in the registration process of pesticides in Belgium. In this regulation, drift reducing spray application techniques can be used to reduce buffer zones. The purpose of this research is to measure and compare the amount of drift sediment for different spray application techniques under field conditions. A drift prediction equation for the reference spraying was used to compare other spraying techniques with the reference spraying, under different weather conditions. Drift measurements were performed for several combinations of nozzle type (flat fan, low-drift, air injection) and size (ISO 02, 03, 04 and 06), spray pressure (2, 3 and 4 bar), driving speed (4, 6, 8 and 10 km.h-1) and spray boom height (0.3, 0.5 and 0.75 m). Nozzle type as well as spray pressure, driving speed and spray boom height, have an important effect on the amount of spray drift. Larger nozzle sizes, lower spray pressures and driving speeds and lower spray boom heights generally reduce spray drift. Concerning nozzle types, air injection nozzles have the highest drift reduction potential followed by the low-drift nozzles and the standard flat fan nozzles
