    Circadian rhythm, activity level, training habits and sports performance : the molecular and subjective components

    Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references.Circadian rhythmicity, which is driven by a circadian clock, is a property of a biological process that displays an oscillation of approximately 24-hours even in the absence of external time cues. Individual differences in the preferred times of waking, activity and rest (sleep) are known as chronotype or diurnal preference; which arise due to differences in circadian rhythmicity due to the fact that rhythms are not exactly 24-hours. Various polymorphisms of certain genes involved in circadian rhythm generation have been associated with extreme chronotype. Of interest to this study is the PER3 gene as it has a variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism in the coding region, which is repeated either four of five times, encoding proteins of different lengths

    Communication Structures of Supplemental Voluntary Kin Relationships

    Although scholars have constructed typologies of voluntary (fictive) kin, few have considered challenges and opportunities of interaction and relationships between biolegal and voluntary kin. This study focused on one type of voluntary kin, supplemental voluntary kin, relationships that often arise because of differing values, underperformed roles, or physical distance from the biolegal family, and wherein relationships are maintained with biolegal and voluntary kin. We examined how these family systems are constructed via interactions in relational triads of “linchpin” persons between biolegal family and voluntary kin. From in-depth interviews with 36 supplemental voluntary kin, we examined themes in the linchpins’ discourse surrounding the interaction, rituals, and ideal relationship between biolegal family and voluntary kin. We constructed a typology of four relational triads representing these relationships: intertwined, limited, separate, and hostile. We describe the structure and communication within each type, and implications for helping families with these triangulated voluntary kin relationships

    Neutron Correlations in the Decay of the First Excited State of 11Li

    The decay of unbound excited 11Li was measured after being populated by a two-proton removal from a 13B beam at 71 MeV/nucleon. Decay energy spectra and Jacobi plots were obtained from measurements of the momentum vectors of the 9Li fragment and neutrons. A resonance at an excitation energy of ∌1.2 MeV was observed. The kinematics of the decay are equally well fit by a simple dineutron-like model or a phase-space model that includes final state interactions. A sequential decay model can be excluded

    Genotype-phenotype characterisation of long survivors with motor neuron disease in Scotland

    Background: We investigated the phenotypes and genotypes of a cohort of ‘long-surviving’ individuals with motor neuron disease (MND) to identify potential targets for prognostication. Methods: Patients were recruited via the Clinical Audit Research and Evaluation for MND (CARE-MND) platform, which hosts the Scottish MND Register. Long survival was defined as > 8 years from diagnosis. 11 phenotypic variables were analysed. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed and variants within 49 MND-associated genes examined. Each individual was screened for C9orf72 repeat expansions. Data from ancestry-matched Scottish populations (the Lothian Birth Cohorts) were used as controls. Results: 58 long survivors were identified. Median survival from diagnosis was 15.5 years. Long survivors were significantly younger at onset and diagnosis than incident patients and had a significantly longer diagnostic delay. 42% had the MND subtype of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS). WGS was performed in 46 individuals: 14 (30.4%) had a potentially pathogenic variant. 4 carried the known SOD1 p.(Ile114Thr) variant. Significant variants in FIG4, hnRNPA2B1, SETX, SQSTM1, TAF15, and VAPB were detected. 2 individuals had a variant in the SPAST gene suggesting phenotypic overlap with hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). No long survivors had pathogenic C9orf72 repeat expansions. Conclusions: Long survivors are characterised by younger age at onset, increased prevalence of PLS and longer diagnostic delay. Genetic analysis in this cohort has improved our understanding of the phenotypes associated with the SOD1 variant p.(Ile114Thr). Our findings confirm that pathogenic expansion of C9orf72 is likely a poor prognostic marker. Genetic screening using targeted MND and/or HSP panels should be considered in those with long survival, or early-onset slowly progressive disease, to improve diagnostic accuracy and aid prognostication

    Behavioral responses of terrestrial mammals to COVID-19 lockdowns

Certain datasets of spatial coordinates will be available only through requests made to the authors due to conservation and Indigenous sovereignty concerns (see table S1 for more information on data use restrictions and contact information for data requests). These sensitive data will be made available upon request to qualified researchers for research purposes, provided that the data use will not threaten the study populations, such as by distribution or publication of the coordinates or detailed maps. Some datasets, such as those overseen by government agencies, have additional legal restrictions on data sharing, and researchers may need to formally apply for data access. Collaborations with data holders are generally encouraged, and in cases where data are held by Indigenous groups or institutions from regions that are under-represented in the global science community, collaboration may be required to ensure inclusion.COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020 reduced human mobility, providing an opportunity to disentangle its effects on animals from those of landscape modifications. Using GPS data, we compared movements and road avoidance of 2300 terrestrial mammals (43 species) during the lockdowns to the same period in 2019. Individual responses were variable with no change in average movements or road avoidance behavior, likely due to variable lockdown conditions. However, under strict lockdowns 10-day 95th percentile displacements increased by 73%, suggesting increased landscape permeability. Animals’ 1-hour 95th percentile displacements declined by 12% and animals were 36% closer to roads in areas of high human footprint, indicating reduced avoidance during lockdowns.     Undergraduate Instructor Assistants (UIAs): Friend or Foe

    Undergraduate students have been and continue to be employed as instructor assistants (UIAs) in a variety of courses across disciplines. However, relatively little empirical research has been published regarding the educational merits for them or their students. The present essay extends such research by focusing specifically on UIAs’ perceived value of the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) on their learning and personal growth. The authors conducted in-depth interviews with six former UIAs and employed a qualitative thematic analysis of their responses. Perceived benefits that emerged from the analysis include, for example, learning how to balance many different roles and responsibilities, gaining a unique perspective on teaching, and developing leadership skills. The findings support previous research that the UIA experience benefits both the UIAs and the instructional process

    Communicatively constructing gender, marriage, and career: A discursive exploration of female doctoral candidates with non-academic male partners

    Located on a transitional bridge between the worlds of student and scholar, doctoral candidates face multiple challenges as they negotiate their personal and professional futures. Researchers argue that women more frequently report mobility, plans for parenthood, and the academic environment as hindrances to their desire to pursue academic careers. Framed in the dialogic paradigm and guided by Relational Dialectics Theory, the goal in the present study was to understand how female doctoral candidates communicate a sense of their academic and family possibilities in light of the cultural, organizational, and familial discourses they encounter. Data consisted of 30 in-depth interviews with female doctoral candidates married to non-academic men to examine how these women situate themselves discursively within career and family contexts, how the discourses interplay to create meaning for the participants, and how they negotiate the identity-related challenges they face. Three primary discourses animated the participants\u27 talk concerning their career and family plans: (a) admiration and worthiness, (b) selfishness, and (c) gendered expectations. While their identities as daughters, wives, and mothers animated much of their talk, participants discursively attempted to marginalize selfishness and gendered expectations while centering their career choices as admirable, worthy, and fulfilling. Participants also navigated four central identity-related challenges: (a) educational differences, (b) uncertainty, (c) desires for motherhood, and (d) self-doubt. These challenges illustrate how the construction and negotiation of personal, relational, and professional identities bridge both interpersonal and organizational contexts. With discourse highlighting the double bind of you can be anything and you can\u27t have it all, the findings of the present study point to the persistence of gender-based pressures while simultaneously suggesting that the family exists as site that challenges, resists, and transforms restrictive gendered norms. Constructing ambitions, making personal and relational decisions, and navigating career possibilities was not an easy construction for these women. Understanding how professional women draw on particular relational and cultural discourses and how they negotiate the challenges they face with their partner fosters a rich opportunity for studying identity construction during a unique period of contestation

    The Experience and Expression of Stepchildren’s Emotions at Critical Events in Stepfamily Life

    This study explored the experience and expression of emotions of adult stepchildren during four critical events in stepfamily life. During semistructured, in-depth interviews, 57 adult stepchildren shared stories about four critical events: the parental divorce, remarriage of one of the parents, an event in the stepfamily that generated feeling more like a family, and an event in the stepfamily that generated feeling less like a family. A total of 402 pages of single- spaced transcripts were coded for emotion, target, and expression of emotion resulting in positive and negative emotion categories and subcategories for all four critical events. Five research questions centered on the emotions commonly experienced during the four aforementioned critical events, the targets of disclosure, and the patterns that indicate a tendency to manage emotion expression
