    Balance and coordination after viewing stereoscopic 3D television.

    Manufacturers and the media have raised the possibility that viewing stereoscopic 3D television (S3D TV) may cause temporary disruption to balance and visuomotor coordination. We looked for evidence of such effects in a laboratory-based study. Four hundred and thirty-three people aged 4-82 years old carried out tests of balance and coordination before and after viewing an 80 min movie in either conventional 2D or stereoscopic 3D, while wearing two triaxial accelerometers. Accelerometry produced little evidence of any change in body motion associated with S3D TV. We found no evidence that viewing the movie in S3D causes a detectable impairment in balance or in visuomotor coordination

    Modelling Co-Evolution in Design Practice

    Co-evolution is considered as a key characteristic of designing. Several authors have described design thinking processes as the co-evolution of design problem and design solution. 1Is theoretical grounding is, however, still in an early stage. In this paper, we aim to bring the concept further by studying a real life design meeting of an architect and a client. We developed a model of how eo-evolution in a multiparty setting might work, consisting of the problems as perceived by the architect and client, the solutions as perceived by the architect and client, and relations between those. A co-evolution episode starts with introducing an underdeveloped design-solution pairing from the perspective of the initiating actor and ends with summing up the discussion and/or agreeing on the decisions taken. The developed model was used to look in detail at the utterances in three co-evolution episodes and then refined by adding a intermediate space concerning the 'use' of the building that mediates between problem and solution spaces in interactions between designer and client

    Breakdown of anomalous channeling with ion energy for accurate strain determination in gan-based heterostructures

    The influence of the beam energy on the determination of strain state with ion channeling in GaN-based heterostructures (HSs) is addressed. Experimental results show that anomalous channeling may hinder an accurate analysis due to the steering effects at the HS interface, which are more intense at lower ion energies. The experimental angular scans have been well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations, correlating the steering effects with the close encounter probability at the interface. Consequently, limitations in the determination of the strain state by ion channeling can be overcome by selecting the adequate beam energy

    Should vascular wall F-18-FDG uptake be adjusted for the extent of atherosclerotic burden?

    Vascular wall 18F-FDG uptake is often used as a surrogate marker of atherosclerotic plaque inflammation. A potential caveat is that vascular wall 18F-FDG uptake is higher simply because more atherosclerosis is present. To determine if the degree of inflammation is high or low relative to the extent of atherosclerosis, vascular wall 18F-FDG uptake may require statistical adjustment for a non-inflammatory marker reflecting the extent of atherosclerosis, e.g. calcification. Adjustments is probably needed if (1) vascular wall 18F-FDG uptake correlates sufficiently strongly with arterial calcification and (2) adjustment for extent of calcification affects determinants of vascular 18F-FDG uptake. This study addresses these questions. 18F-FDG PET/low-dose-CT scans of 99 patients were used. Cardiovascular risk factors were assessed and PET/CT scans were analysed for standardized 18F-FDG uptake values and calcification. ANOVA was used to establish the association between vascular 18F-FDG uptake and calcification. Multiple linear regression (with and without calcification as independent variable) was used to show whether determinants of vascular 18F-FDG uptake were affected by the degree of calcification. 18F-FDG uptake was related to increased calcification in the aortic arch, descending and abdominal aorta. However, 18F-FDG uptake showed considerable overlap between categories of calcification. Age and body mass index were main determinants of vascular 18F-FDG uptake. In multiple regression analyses, most standardized beta coefficients of these determinants were not affected by adjustment for the degree of calcification. Although vascular 18F-FDG uptake is related to total atherosclerotic burden, as reflected by vascular calcification, the association is weak and unlikely to affect the identification of determinants of atherosclerotic inflammation implicating no need for adjustment in future studies

    Production often causes pollution as a by-product. Once environmental degradation becomes too severe, regulation is introduced by which society forces the economy to make a transition to cleaner production processes. We model this transition as a change in general purpose technology" and investigate how it interferes with economic growth driven by quality-improvements. The model gives an explanation for the inverted U-shaped pollution-income relation found in empirical research for many pollutants (Environmental Kuznets Curve). We provide an analytical foundation for the claim that the rise and decline of pollution can be explained by policy-induced technology shifts and intrasectoral changes

    Modeling and Simulation of Multi-Lane Traffic Flow

    A most important aspect in the field of traffic modeling is the simulation of bottleneck situations. For their realistic description a macroscopic multi-lane model for uni-directional freeways including acceleration, deceleration, velocity fluctuations, overtaking and lane-changing maneuvers is systematically deduced from a gas-kinetic (Boltzmann-like) approach. The resulting equations contain corrections with respect to previous models.     Stwl Modifies Chromatin Compaction and Is Required to Maintain DNA Integrity in the Presence of Perturbed DNA Replication

    Hydroxyurea, a well-known DNA replication inhibitor, induces cell cycle arrest and intact checkpoint functions are required to survive DNA replication stress induced by this genotoxic agent. Perturbed DNA synthesis also results in elevated levels of DNA damage. It is unclear how organisms prevent accumulation of this type of DNA damage that coincides with hampered DNA synthesis. Here, we report the identification of stonewall ( stwl) as a novel hydroxyurea-hypersensitive mutant. We demonstrate that Stwl is required to prevent accumulation of DNA damage induced by hydroxyurea; yet, Stwl is not involved in S/M checkpoint regulation. We show that Stwl is a heterochromatin-associated protein with transcription-repressing capacities. In stwl mutants, levels of trimethylated H3K27 and H3K9 ( two hallmarks of silent chromatin) are decreased. Our data provide evidence for a Stwl-dependent epigenetic mechanism that is involved in the maintenance of the normal balance between euchromatin and heterochromatin and that is required to prevent accumulation of DNA damage in the presence of DNA replication stress.</p
