    The role of attention in the perception of music structure

    Existing models of the perception of musical structure mostly do not account for the fact that listeners’ hearings are known to vary substantially: the same passage can be interpreted differently by different listeners, or by the same listener at different times. Attention””the deliberate or unconscious focus a listener may place on a particular aspect of the music, such as its melody or rhythm””seems to play a role in the perception of structure, but whether it is an important cause of grouping preferences or the product of them is unclear. We study how paying attention to musical features (including harmony, melody, rhythm and timbre) influences grouping decisions. The experiments use composed musical stimuli exhibiting changes in particular features by design; some stimuli exhibit a single change, while others exhibit changes in different features at different times, leading to ambiguous segment boundaries and groupings.We first tested whether our subjects were able to correctly associate changes with musical features, to establish that their understanding of the stimuli was multidimensional and not purely holistic. Second, we tested whether an explicit instruction to focus on a feature increased the salience of boundaries marked by a change in that feature. Finally, we tested whether focusing on a feature would make groupings according to that feature preferable. To do so, we asked subjects to perform a distractor pattern-detection task that directed their attention to a particular feature. They then heard ambiguous stimuli, which had structure AAB and ABB with respect to two different features, and indicated their preferred grouping.The results showed that listeners were skilled at identifying changes, that correctly-directed attention boosted the salience of changes, and that focusing on a feature could indeed cause a listener to prefer one grouping over another. Whereas one’s level of musical training greatly impacted how one responded on the first two experiments, its impact was not significant in the third task, suggesting that attention is a general mechanism in guiding grouping preferences

    The role of mutation rate variation and genetic diversity in the architecture of human disease

    Background We have investigated the role that the mutation rate and the structure of genetic variation at a locus play in determining whether a gene is involved in disease. We predict that the mutation rate and its genetic diversity should be higher in genes associated with disease, unless all genes that could cause disease have already been identified. Results Consistent with our predictions we find that genes associated with Mendelian and complex disease are substantially longer than non-disease genes. However, we find that both Mendelian and complex disease genes are found in regions of the genome with relatively low mutation rates, as inferred from intron divergence between humans and chimpanzees, and they are predicted to have similar rates of non-synonymous mutation as other genes. Finally, we find that disease genes are in regions of significantly elevated genetic diversity, even when variation in the rate of mutation is controlled for. The effect is small nevertheless. Conclusions Our results suggest that gene length contributes to whether a gene is associated with disease. However, the mutation rate and the genetic architecture of the locus appear to play only a minor role in determining whether a gene is associated with disease

    Augmenting forearm crutches with wireless sensors for lower limb rehabilitation

    Forearm crutches are frequently used in the rehabilitation of an injury to the lower limb. The recovery rate is improved if the patient correctly applies a certain fraction of their body weight (specified by a clinician) through the axis of the crutch, referred to as partial weight bearing (PWB). Incorrect weight bearing has been shown to result in an extended recovery period or even cause further damage to the limb. There is currently no minimally invasive tool for long-term monitoring of a patient's PWB in a home environment. This paper describes the research and development of an instrumented forearm crutch that has been developed to wirelessly and autonomously monitor a patient's weight bearing over the full period of their recovery, including its potential use in a home environment. A pair of standard forearm crutches are augmented with low-cost off-the-shelf wireless sensor nodes and electronic components to provide indicative measurements of the applied weight, crutch tilt and hand position on the grip. Data are wirelessly transmitted between crutches and to a remote computer (where they are processed and visualized in LabVIEW), and the patient receives biofeedback by means of an audible signal when they put too much or too little weight through the crutch. The initial results obtained highlight the capability of the instrumented crutch to support physiotherapists and patients in monitoring usage

    Preliminary seismological and geological studies of the San Fernando, California, earthquake of February 9 1971

    The San Fernando earthquake was the largest earthquake to occur in the metropolitan Los Angeles area in more than 50 years. It has tentatively been assigned a magnitude, M_L of 6.6, a focal depth of 13.0 km, and an epicentral location about 12 km east of Newhall, California, at 34°24.0'N, 118°23.7'W (Figure 1), but these figures undoubtedly will be modified as further data become available. Although the focal depth is not as well defined as the epicenter, it is consistent with other observations suggesting thrusting on a fault plane dipping north about 45 ° and breaking the surface in the Sylmar-San Fernando area (Figure 1). It should be emphasized that the hypocenter of the main shock represents only the point of initial rupture. Breaking, presumably, then propagated southward and upward from this point, so that the main geological and engineering effects were observed farther south where the fault was shallower and the displacement greater. The location of the main shock is based on readings from permanent stations of the Caltech network, as well as the U. S. Geological Survey station at Point Mugu (SBLG) and the California Department of Water Resources stations at Pyramid (PYR) and Cedar Springs (CSP). Portable Caltech seismographs were installed in the epicentral area as early as 3 hr following the main shock, and, within a few days, there were at least 30 portable units in the region operated by various groups and agencies

    Mechanisms of carbon dioxide detection in the earthworm Dendrobaena veneta

    IntroductionCarbon dioxide (CO2) is a critical biological signal that is noxious to many animals at high concentrations. The earthworm Dendrobaena veneta lives in subterranean burrows containing high levels of CO2 and respires through its skin. Despite the ecological and agricultural importance of earthworms, relatively little is known about how they make decisions in their environment, including their response to elevated levels of CO2.MethodsTo examine CO2 detection in this species, we designed the exudate assay, in which we placed an earthworm in a sealed container, exposed it to varying concentrations of CO2 for one minute, and recorded the amount of exudate secreted. Because earthworms excrete exudate in response to noxious stimuli, we hypothesized that the amount of exudate produced was proportional to the amount of irritation. We repeated these experiments after treatment with several blockers for molecules with potential involvement in CO2 detection, including carbonic anhydrases, guanylate cyclase, TRPA1, ASICs, and OTOP channels. We also confirmed the presence of homologous transcripts for each of these gene families in an epithelial transcriptome for D. veneta. Additionally, since organisms often detect CO2 levels indirectly by monitoring the conversion to carbonic acid (a weak acid), we used the exudate assay to evaluate aversion to additional weak acids (formic acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid).ResultsEarthworms excreted significantly more exudate in response to CO2 in a dosage-dependent manner, and this response was muted by the general carbonic anhydrase inhibitor acetazolamide, the carbonic anhydrase IX/XII inhibitor indisulam, the calcium channel blocker ruthenium red, the sodium channel blocker amiloride, and the acid-sensing ion channel blocker diminazene aceturate.DiscussionThese data provide evidence of the role of carbonic anhydrase and epithelial sodium channels in earthworm CO2 detection, establish that, similar to other subterranean-dwelling animals, earthworms are extremely tolerant of CO2, and contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms used by earthworms to detect and react to weak acids in their environment

    Q methodology and a Delphi poll: a useful approach to researching a narrative approach to therapy

    Q methodology and a Delphi poll combined qualitative and quantitative methods to explore definitions of White and Epston's (1990) narrative approach to therapy among a group of UK practitioners. A Delphi poll was used to generate statements about narrative therapy. The piloting of statements by the Delphi panel identified agreement about theoretical ideas underpinning narrative therapy and certain key practices. A wider group of practitioners ranked the statements in a Q sort and made qualitative comments about their sorting. Quantitative methods (principal components analysis) were used to extract eight accounts of narrative therapy, five of which are qualitatively analysed in this paper. Agreement and differences were identified across a range of issues, including the social construction of narratives, privileging a political stance or narrative techniques and the relationship with other therapies, specifically systemic psychotherapy. Q methodology, combined with the Delphi poll, was a unique and innovative feature of this study
