How Do Maternal Subclinical Symptoms Influence Infant Motor Development during the First Year of Life?
An unavoidable reciprocal influence characterizes the mother-child dyad. Within this relationship, the presence of depression, somatization, hostility, paranoid ideation, and interpersonal sensitivity symptoms at a subclinical level and their possible input on infant motor competences has not been yet considered. Bearing in mind that motor abilities represent not only an indicator of the infant’s health-status, but also the principal field to infer his/her needs, feelings and intentions, in this study the quality of infants’ movements were assessed and analyzed in relationship with the maternal attitudes. The aim of this research was to investigate if/how maternal symptomatology may pilot infant’s motor development during his/her first year of life by observing the characteristics of motor development in infants aged 0–11 months. Participants included 123 mothers and their infants (0–11 months-old). Mothers’ symptomatology was screened with the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), while infants were tested with the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-Second Edition. All dyads belonged to a non-clinical population, however, on the basis of SCL-90-R scores, the mothers’ sample was divided into two groups: normative and subclinical. Descriptive, t-test, correlational analysis between PDMS-2 scores and SCL-90-R results are reported, as well as regression models results. Both positive and negative correlations were found between maternal perceived symptomatology, Somatization (SOM), Interpersonal Sensitivity (IS), Depression (DEP), Hostility (HOS), and Paranoid Ideation (PAR) and infants’ motor abilities. These results were further verified by applying regression models to predict the infant’s motor outcomes on the basis of babies’ age and maternal status. The presence of positive symptoms in the SCL-90-R questionnaire (subclinical group) predicted good visual-motor integration and stationary competences in the babies. In particular, depressive and hostility feelings in mothers seemed to induce an infant motor behavior characterized by a major control of the environmental space. When mothers perceived a higher level of hostility and somatization, their babies showed difficulties in sharing action space, such as required in the development of stationary positions and grasping abilities. In a completely different way, when infants can rely on a mother with low-perceived symptoms (normative group) his/her motor performances develop with a higher degree of freedom/independence. These findings suggest, for the first time, that even in a non- clinical sample, mother’s perceived-symptoms can produce important consequences not in infant motor development as a whole, but in some specific areas, contributing to shape the infant’s motor ability and his/her capability to act in the world
Is âUnconsummated Marriageâ still an appropriate term? A snapshot of reality
The most shared definition of Unconsummated Marriage (UM) refers to âthe failure to perform successful sexual intercourse at the beginning of
the marriage. UM usually occurs in the first few nights of marriage and so it is frequently referred to as âhoneymoon impotenceâ or âwedding night
impotenceâ. In the Middle-Eastern (MES) and Western (WS) societies, sexuality follows different patterns in terms of meaning and rules. Moreover
the evolution of societies all around the world created new contexts and kinds of relationship. This could hamper a correct taxonomy of such sexual
dysfunction where a social variable seems crucial.
Aim: To analyze and review data on UM all around the world, to understand if in different societies it refers to the same situation.
Method: A review of published literature on UM from 1970 to date, was conducted.
Results: Substantial difference emerged from MES to WS. In MES, sexuality is allowable only in marriage, while in WS sexuality and relationship are
not strongly linked. This could suggest that the term âmarriageâ is unable to cover the phenomenon in such different countries. Moreover, the average
time before the consultation, causal attribution and prevalence are very different in Western and Middle Eastern countries.
Conclusion: We found that the term âfirst attempts dysfunctionâ could be better used to describe male, female or both difficulties related to
ignorance about sexuality or state/performance anxiety. On the other hand over the individual category of sexual dysfunctions, we suggest a new term
as âUnconsummated relationshipâ, where individual difficulties toward sexuality are involved creating a coupleâs dysfunction.

De-excitation spectroscopy of strongly interacting Rydberg gases
We present experimental results on the controlled de-excitation of Rydberg
states in a cold gas of Rb atoms. The effect of the van der Waals interactions
between the Rydberg atoms is clearly seen in the de-excitation spectrum and
dynamics. Our observations are confirmed by numerical simulations. In
particular, for off-resonant (facilitated) excitation we find that the
de-excitation spectrum reflects the spatial arrangement of the atoms in the
quasi one-dimensional geometry of our experiment. We discuss future
applications of this technique and implications for detection and controlled
dissipation schemes.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
A flexible quantum efficiency measurement device for photosensors testing
This paper presents a new quantum efficiency setup based on a 2D motorized
stage, a wide spectrum xenon lamp, a beam splitter system, and two calibrated
photodiodes for measuring the quantum efficiency (QE) of photosensors from PMTs
(1 to 10 inches) to SIPM and photodiodes. The large area covered by the 2D
stages permit to study the quantum efficiency of a matrix of multichannel
photosensors in an automated way and PMTs with diameter up to ten inches. The
setup offers high precision and accuracy in characterizing the quantum
efficiency versus wavelength over the range of 250 nm to 1100 nm and in two
dimensions with a positioning precision of ten microns. The setup monitors the
light intensity synchronously with the output current yield from photosensors
under test. This ensures the accuracy and repeatability of the measurements.
The motorized stage allows precise positioning of the light source with respect
to the active area. Moreover, the emission spectrum of the xenon lamp provides
a broad range of illumination in terms of dynamics and wavelength span
Tracheocutaneous fistula in patients undergoing supracricoid partial laryngectomy: the role of chronic aspiration
The aim of the present retrospective controlled study was to analyse and compare risk factors for tracheocutaneous fistula in patients who received tracheostomy after supracricoid partial laryngectomy with those who received tracheostomy for other causes. We enrolled 39 patients with tracheocutaneous fistulas who were divided into two groups. The first received temporary tracheostomy for supracricoid partial laryngectomies (n = 21), while the control group consisted of patients who received temporary tracheostomy for other causes (n = 18). Risk factors believed to play a role in the pathogenesis of tracheocutaneous fistula were examined including advanced age, cardiopathy, local infections, radiotherapy, elevated body mass index, malnutrition, decannulation time and aspiration grade. The Leipzig and Pearson scale score was significantly higher in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group (p = 0.006 and 0.031 for univariate and multivariate analyses, respectively). The penetration/aspiration scale score was significantly higher in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group as determined by univariate analysis (p = 0.014). The decannulation time was significantly lower in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group (p = 0.004 and 0.0004 for univariate and multivariate analyses, respectively). The number of surgical closures for tracheocutaneous fistula was significantly higher in the supracricoid partial laryngectomy group by univariate analysis (p = 0.027). These results suggest that chronic aspiration and related cough may be important pathogenic factors for tracheocutaneous fistula and could be responsible for the significantly higher rates of closure failure in patients after supracricoid partial laryngectomy
5d-5f Electric-multipole Transitions in Uranium Dioxide Probed by Non-resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering
Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been
performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5)
absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector
q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within
the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions
of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the
pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is
explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calculations. The
results obtained demonstrate the high potential of NIXS as a bulk-sensitive
technique for the characterization of the electronic properties of actinide
materials.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters on 31 December 200
Economic Consequences of Anti-HCV Treatment of Patients Diagnosed Through Screening in Italy: A Prospective Modelling Analysis
Aim To evaluate the cost-consequences of the investment for anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment by the Italian National Health System (NHS) for patients who will be newly diagnosed through active HCV screening, implemented in Italy from 2020. Methods A previously published Markov model was used to estimate the disease complications avoided and the associated savings over 20 years to treat a standardised population of 10,000 HCV-infected patients diagnosed as a result of screening. Disease progression probabilities and fibrosis stage distribution were based on previously reported data in the literature. Real-life treatment effectiveness and medical expenses for disease management were estimated starting from a representative cohort of HCV-treated patients in Italy (Italian Platform for the Study of Viral Hepatitis Therapies). The breakeven point in time (BPT) was defined as the years required for the initial investment in treatment to be recovered in terms of cumulative costs saved. Results Over a 20-year time horizon, the treatment of 10,000 standardized patients diagnosed through active HCV screening results in 7769 avoided events of progression, which are associated with euro838.73 million net savings accrued by the Italian NHS. The initial investment in treatment is recouped in 4.3 years in the form of savings from disease complications avoided. Conclusion Investment in treatment of newly diagnosed patients will bring a significant reduction in disease complications, which is associated with great economic benefits. This type of action can reduce the infection rate as well as the clinical and economic disease burden of HCV in Italy
Sc substitution for Mg in MgB2: effects on Tc and Kohn anomaly
Here we report synthesis and characterization of Mg_{1-x}Sc_{x}B_{2}
(0.12T_{c}>6 K.
We find that the Sc doping moves the chemical potential through the 2D/3D
electronic topological transition (ETT) in the sigma band where the ``shape
resonance" of interband pairing occurs. In the 3D regime beyond the ETT we
observe a hardening of the E_{2g} Raman mode with a significant line-width
narrowing due to suppression of the Kohn anomaly over the range 0<q<2k_{F}.Comment: 8 pages, 4 EPS figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
The desire of parenthood. Correlation between co-parental interactions and the romantic relationship quality among Italian same-sex couples.
In several longitudinal studies, co-parental interactions have been formerly observed during the pregnancy, demonstrating how these interactive dynamics can predict the quality of family interactions with the presence of the baby. Cooperation between the parents during the first year after childbirth is the most predictive factor of the best future adjustment of the baby during the school age and social and affective development. In the last years, research focused on such interactive dynamics recognisable during the process of transition to parenthood; nevertheless, these studies pointed out features regarding a particular type of family defined as “traditional”, formed by a mother, a father and their biological children. Thanks to the development of the medicine concerning the medical assisted procreation, nowadays parenthood is accessible by gay and lesbian couples as well; gay and lesbian parenting is becoming a reality increasingly relevant also in Italy. Couple satisfaction, co-parental interactions and intuitive parental competences have been evaluated among a sample formed by 45 stable heterosexual, gay and lesbian couples without a child that want to become parents in the future. We used the systemic approach by the prenatal Lausanne Trilogue Play, a semi-naturalistic role-play: this tool involves in a cooperative task the two “parents” and a doll, which represents the child-to-be. Couple satisfaction has been evaluated with the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS Spanier, 1976).
Preliminary data suggest that there are no differences between the three groups regarding co-parental intuitive competences and that a higher cohesion between the couple involves a better cooperation between the partners
