The Mums and Babies Ensemble: A Manual

    Get PDF
This publication is a performance script which has elements of an instruction manual, invitation, ideas book, collage, template and recipe. It is also a document of a creative process. The Mums and Babies Ensemble was a series of public workshops and events convened by three mums/theatre-makers and their babies. It was prompted by the desire to integrate the structure and chaos of performance-making and motherhood, to create a space that would meet the needs of the parents and babies equally, to capture some memories, to grow a community, and to pass something on eventually. This book is our offering to anyone who has ever been a baby as well as any artistically-minded parents and their newborns. The Mums and Babies Ensemble was part of an AHRC-funded script development and public engagement project led by Duška Radosavljević

Search Party is the collaboration between live artists Jodie Hawkes and Pete Phillips. In 2007 we started making Search Party vs… - an interactive, durational performance exploring our reoccurring interest in sport. We’re fascinated by sport; in narratives of the sports event, the relationship between task and failure, fandom and the sporting gaze, and how these ideas can be used as strategies for creating, framing and performing live art events. We make performances for theatres and public spaces and our sports related practice has existed in both contexts. Search Party vs… takes place in public and is predominantly concerned with a desire to engage with the inhabitants of public places, creating performative contexts which generate shared endeavor. Existing somewhere between mass public spectacle and intimate 1-on-1 performance, Search Party vs... borrows the notion of team from sport to examine connections between the personal and the geographic, exploring ideas of community, place and belonging

This contribution discusses the issue of belonging in relation to the creation of artists’ communities, networks and generations. Written from a particular position of a woman artist/scholar engaged in both professional performance practice and practice as research academic culture, this contribution is a working through of a momentary politics of belonging to a generation. It posits the interview with Helen Varley Jamieson, the webqueen of the Magdalena Project, as a premise through which such questions of belonging are posed. Through this contribution I am concerned to address the particularities of multiple belongings, which are open, temporary and generative rather than exclusive
