    Psychosomatic Health Status of Children Exposed to the Chernobyl Accident

    Childhood victims were investigated focussing on the psychosomatic disorders. The subjects were some of the 3834 children who evacuated from the Chernobyl zone to Kiev (evacuees) and 200 children who have been living in Kiev since prior to the accident (comparison group). A psychological test administered to 504 evacuees aged 12-14 years at the time of the accident and the comparison group indicated that the frequencies of neutroticism, high level of anxiety and conflicts were significantly higher in the evacuees than in the comparison group (p<0.001). Another psychological test administered at puberty to the 504 evacuees and 200 other evacuees exposed to the accident at 4-6 years of age indicated that the psycho-emotional portrait of evacuated teenagers significantly changed with time since the accident. The effects of the Chernobyl accident on the health of the vegetative dystonia observed in 1987-1990 and 1990-1995 were higher in the evacuees than in the comparison group, although they were not statistically significant. Furthermore, a significant (p<0.001) association of the vegetative dystonia with peptic and cardiovascular disorders was observed. The present study indicates that the vegetative dystonia is still highly prevalent among childhood victims and deems to support that the vegetative dystonia may be a precursor of several diseases such as cardiovascular and peptic disorders. It should be emphasized that a health promotion program to produce a change in psychological and social problems after the Chernobyl accident is necessary to decrease the health impact among Ukrainian people

    Production of IFN-  by CD4+ T cells in response to malaria antigens is IL-2 dependent

    T-cell immune responses are critical for protection of the host and for disease pathogenesis during infection with Plasmodium species. We examined the regulation of CD4+ T-cell cytokine responses during infection with Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA). CD4+ T cells from PbA-infected mice produced IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10 in response to TCR stimulation at levels higher than those from uninfected mice. This altered cytokine response was dependent on parasitemia. To examine the specificity of the response, mice were adoptively transferred with CD4+ T cells from OT-II TCR transgenic mice and were infected with PbA expressing OVA. Unexpectedly, CD4+ T cells from the OT-II-transferred wild-type PbA-infected mice showed high levels of IFN-γ production after stimulation with OVA and the cells producing IFN-γ were not OT-II but were host CD4+ T cells. Further investigation revealed that host CD4+ T cells produced IFN-γ in response to IL-2 produced by activated OT-II cells. This IFN-γ response was completely inhibited by anti-CD25 mAbs, and this effect was not due to the block of the survival signals provided by IL-2. Furthermore, IFN-γ production by CD4+ T cells in response to PbA antigens was dependent on IL-2. These findings suggest the importance of IL-2 levels during infection with malaria parasites and indicate that CD4+ T cells can produce IFN-γ without TCR engagement via a bystander mechanism in response to IL-2 produced by other activated CD4+ T cells

    Immunohistochemical Analysis of Connexin43 Expression in Infertile Human Testes

    Connexin43 (Cx43) is abundantly expressed in mammalian testes and implicated in the regulation of cell-to-cell interaction between germ cells and Sertoli cells, which is essential to the normal process of spermatogenesis. In the present study, we investigated the relation between Cx43 expression and the degree of spermatogenesis in infertile human testes. Immunohistochemical analysis of Cx43 was performed on testicular biopsies from 29 patients with azoospermia (n=23) and severe oligospermia (n=6), who gave informed consent to this experiment. The degree of testicular spermatogenesis was evaluated by Johnsen score. In the interstitium, immunostaining for Cx43 was localized to some focal parts of plasma membrane between neighboring Leydig cells. In seminiferous tubules with normal spermatogenesis, Cx43 expression was found between Sertoli cells and germ cells. However, Cx43 expression in maturation arrest was decreased and located mainly in the basal compartment of seminiferous tubules. Finally, there was a significant positive correlation between histological score of spermatogenesis and intensity of Cx43 (p=0.0294). These data suggest that the alteration of Cx43 expression may be involved in spermatogenic impairment, and that the communication between Sertoli cells and germ cells through Cx43 may be important for maturation of spermatogenesis

    The Uteroglobin Gene G38A Polymorphism Is Not Associated with Kawasaki Disease

    This study analyzed the genomic DNA extracted from 170 patients with Kawasaki disease as well as their clinical and laboratory parametersto determine whether uteroglobin gene polymorphism, which may be associated with the morbidity rate and severity of IgA nephropathy, is involvedin the pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease, which is another type of vasculitic syndrome in childhood. The uteroglobin genotype at position38 was determined by Sau96I digestion of PCR products. The uteroglobin genotype and allele frequency in Kawasaki disease patientswere compared with those of published control data reported by three independent studies on Japanese individuals. The clinical parametersinvestigated were age at onset, gender, duration of fever, white blood cell count, C-reactive protein, aspartate aminotransferase, alanineaminotransferase and total protein. No significant difference associated with the uteroglobin genotype was observed in the clinical parameters.The genotypic and allele frequencies at position 38 of the uteroglobin gene did not differ significantly in the three studies of Japanese healthycontrols and the present study. The logistic regression analysis demonstrated that no clinical parameter was associated with the progressionto coronary artery lesions except for the duration of fever (odds ratio = 1.7; 95% confidential interval = 1.42-2.05). In conclusion, the presentstudy failed to prove an association of uteroglobin gene polymorphism with the morbidity rate or the severity of Kawasaki disease, but suggestedthe existence of a factor contributing to the onset of Kawasaki disease and progression to coronary artery lesions in Kawasaki diseasepatients

    Mental health conditions in Korean atomic bomb survivors: a survey in Seoul

    More than 60 years have elapsed since the atomic bombings to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and since all of the atomic bomb survivors have become old, the importance of caring their mental health has become increasing in Japan. Although approximately 70% of overseas atomic bomb are living in Korea, there have been quite few studies on their mental health. The objectives of the present study were to elucidate whether the mental health conditions of atomic bomb survivor in Korea are similar to those in Japan. The subjects were 181 Korean atomic bomb survivors living in Korea (cases) and 209 outpatients of a hospital in Seoul who were not exposed to atomic bombs (controls). Interviewers administered them at the hospital a questionnaire with Impact of Event Scale-Revised, General Health Questionnaire 12 (GHQ-12), Korean version of short form Geriatric Depression Scale and the K scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Excluding subjects with incomplete responses we analyzed 162 cases and 189 controls. The proportion of subjects with high score of GHQ-12 ( 4) was significantly higher in cases (78/162 or 48.1%) than in controls (42/189 or 22.2%) (p < 0.0001, Fisher\u27s exact test). The present results, though preliminary, indicate that atomic bomb survivors in Korea have also mental health problems similar to those observed in Japanese atomic bomb survivors, indicating the necessity of a larger study
