Two new species of Kermesidae, Kermes orientalis Liu and Shi and K. flavus Liu, are designated. Morphological characters of post-reproductive and teneral young adult females, as well as the first instars (crawlers) are described and illustrated. A key to the young adult females of the genus from China is given. Can tourists become disciples? The formation and mechanism of place conversion in traditional Chinese villages
Place attachment has been extensively studied in the field of tourism. However, it is important to recognize that place attachment alone may not fully capture the emotional expression of tourists’ spiritual beliefs and their sense of belonging to a destination. Therefore, a more comprehensive attachment theory is needed to encompass higher dimensions. This article focuses on the ancient Chinese villages of Yantou, Cangpo, and Furong from a tourist perspective, and introduces genius loci in architectural phenomenology. We set out to expand the study of spiritual dimensions of place attachment on the basis of local attachment, redefining tourists’ place connection and putting forward the new concept of place conversion. A qualitative analysis of online text using Rooting theory was conducted to condense 22 categories into 6 main categories and establish a model. The study shows that the mechanism of place conversion is composed of situational perception (place perception and place identity), physical and mental immersion (spatio-temporal immersion and place conversion), and behavioral willingness (tourists intention and conversion behavior). The study has implications for the conservation and development of traditional villages and future research on the spiritual experiences of tourists
High-throughput screening of rare metabolically active tumor cells in pleural effusion and peripheral blood of lung cancer patients
Malignant pleural effusion (MPE), the presence of malignant cells in pleural fluid, is often the first sign of many cancers and occurs in patients with metastatic malignancies. Accurate detection of tumor cells in pleural fluid is crucial because the presence of MPE denotes an advanced stage of disease and directs a switch in clinical managements. Cytology, as a traditional diagnostic tool, has limited sensitivity especially when tumor cells are not abundant, and may be confounded by reactive mesothelial cells in the pleural fluid. We describe a highly sensitive approach for rapid detection of metabolically active tumor cells in MPE via exploiting the altered glucose metabolism of tumor cells relative to benign cells. Metabolically active tumor cells with high glucose uptake, as evaluated by a fluorescent glucose analog (2-NBDG), are identified by high-throughput fluorescence screening within a chip containing 200,000 addressable microwells and collected for malignancy confirmation via single-cell sequencing. We demonstrate the utility of this approach through analyzing MPE from a cohort of lung cancer patients. Most candidate tumor cells identified are confirmed to harbor the same driver oncogenes as their primary lesions. In some patients, emergence of secondary mutations that mediate acquired resistance to ongoing targeted therapies is also detected before resistance is manifested in the clinical imaging. The detection scheme can be extended to analyze peripheral blood samples. Our approach may serve as a valuable complement to cytology in MPE diagnosis, helping identify the driver oncogenes and resistance-leading mutations for targeted therapies
Consecutive Insulator-Metal-Insulator Phase Transitions of Vanadium Dioxide by Hydrogen Doping
We report modulation of a reversible phase transition in VO2 films by
hydrogen doping. A metallic phase and a new insulating phase are successively
observed at room temperature as the doping concentration increases. It is
suggested that the polarized charges from doped hydrogens play an important
role. These charges gradually occupy V3d-O2p hybridized orbitals and
consequently modulate the filling of the VO2 crystal conduction band-edge
states, which eventually evolve into new valence band-edge states. This
demonstrates the exceptional sensitivity of VO2 electronic properties to
electron concentration and orbital occupancy, providing key information for the
